Wing's Drone Delivery Expansion Hits 150 More Walmart Stores
In a significant expansion of its drone delivery operations, Alphabet-owned company Wing has announced that it will be deploying its drones at an additional 150 Walmart stores by the end of 2026. This move aims to bring the total number of locations with Wing's drone delivery service to 270, a goal set for completion by 2027.
Currently, Wing operates at approximately 27 stores across the US, including several in Atlanta and Walmart locations in Dallas-Forth Worth and Arkansas. The company has also partnered with DoorDash to conduct drone deliveries in Dallas and Charlotte, North Carolina.
According to Wing, its drones have completed over 750,000 deliveries since their first launch in 2012. The company claims that by shifting more deliveries to small electric multi-rotor aircraft, fewer polluting trucks will be needed for last-mile deliveries, which aligns with the environmental benefits of using drones for delivery services.
The expansion is also a testament to growing demand for Wing's delivery service. The company revealed that its "top 25% of customers ordered 3 times a week" and that deliveries have grown by 300% in the last six months.
Wing's flagship drone can handle payloads of up to 2.5 pounds, while its newer models can carry payloads of up to 5 pounds. The drones use tethers and hooks to pick up small bags and lightweight cardboard boxes from designated distribution sites in Walmart parking lots, and then drop them off in customers' front lawns.
With this expansion, Wing is poised to become one of the largest drone delivery services in the US, marking a significant milestone for the industry.
