Khaleda Zia, first female Bangladesh prime minister, dies aged 80

Bangladesh Mourns Loss of First Female PM Khaleda Zia at 80

The country has lost one of its most significant and divisive figures since independence, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announcing the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Tuesday morning. Zia, who was 80, had a long history of opposing military rule and was known for her uncompromising stance against authoritarianism.

Zia's rise to power began in 1991, after her husband Ziaur Rahman's assassination in 1981. She remained in office until 1996 and again from 2001 until she was toppled by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 1996. The two women have been locked in a fierce political rivalry that spanned over three decades.

Zia's time in power was marked by accusations of corruption, which led to her conviction and imprisonment in 2018 for 10 years on corruption charges. Despite this, she continued to campaign for the BNP, calling for free and fair elections in 2026.

In recent months, Zia's health began to decline significantly, with her serving time under house arrest until the fall of Prime Minister Hasina in a mass uprising in 2024. After her release from house arrest, Zia was allowed to travel abroad for medical treatment, but her condition continued to deteriorate.

Zia is expected to be buried on Wednesday in Dhaka, alongside her husband. Her son Tarique Rahman has returned to Bangladesh to contest the upcoming elections as a frontrunner for the BNP. The opposition views this as an opportunity to revive their chances of winning power.

Former Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus released a statement calling Zia a "symbol of the democratic movement", acknowledging her role in fighting against military rule and authoritarianism. With Zia's passing, Bangladesh marks the end of an era in its complex history of politics and democracy.

I'm still trying to process this news 🀯... Khaleda Zia was a force to be reckoned with, you know? I mean, she went from being a wife of a military ruler to becoming one herself, and then she even had the guts to take on Sheikh Hasina in a battle for power. It's crazy to think about how far her legacy is going to stretch, considering all the drama that came with it πŸ’β€β™€οΈ.

I'm kinda sad for Bangladesh, though - they lost someone who was unapologetically themselves, even if that meant being divisive or unpopular at times πŸ€”. I wonder what's next for Tarique Rahman and the BNP; will they be able to bring about change, or is it just more of the same old politics? And how will Sheikh Hasina move forward without her biggest rival out of the picture?

It's wild to think that this woman who had such an impact on Bangladeshi politics has now passed away at 80 πŸ’€. She may not have been perfect, but you gotta respect the fact that she stood up for what she believed in, even if it meant going against the grain 🌈.

πŸ€” finally a death that'll bring some peace to bangladesh's neverending drama 😴 khaleda zia was quite the character - all about being stubborn and refusing to back down πŸ™„ i mean, it's not like she had a hand in some pretty sketchy stuff or anything... 10 yrs in prison for corruption? yeah okay πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ still managed to keep on trucking with her party and whatnot. i guess you could say she was a symbol of the democratic movement... for those who love watching power struggles between women 😏 hope her son tarique does the country some good, lol like that's gonna happen πŸ‘€

ugh, she was such a polarising figure πŸ€”. people either loved or hated her, there was no in between, you know? i remember watching her speeches back in the day and thinking, 'wow, this woman is not messing around' πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. but at the same time, i also saw how her actions, especially during her time in power, were super divisive and hurt a lot of people πŸ˜”.

anyway, it's crazy to think that someone who was so influential in bangladesh's politics for so long is now gone πŸ™. my grandma used to talk about the country's struggle for independence all the time, and i always wondered what zia would have done differently if she were still alive πŸ€”. it'll be interesting to see how her son tarique Rahman does in the elections πŸ‘€.

πŸ˜” 80 years young & still going strong. Can't believe she's gone, I mean what a legend! πŸ’ͺ Khaleda Zia is one of those names that commands respect, even if you don't agree with her views. Her fight against military rule was so underrated πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. She may have had her flaws (who doesn't?), but she was a true leader who never gave up on democracy. The rivalry between her and Sheikh Hasina was epic πŸ”₯, I'm just glad we got to see both strong women in politics. RIP Khaleda Zia 🌹, your legacy will live on πŸ’•

😊 I'm thinking about Khaleda Zia's life and legacy... she was a true fighter for democracy & freedom in Bangladesh πŸ™Œ It's crazy to think that her time in power was marked by controversy, but still, she never gave up on her vision of a free & fair society πŸ’ͺ Her health issues were super tough, but she kept pushing forward, even serving time under house arrest 🚫 That's the kind of strength & resilience we need more of in politics 🀝 And now, Tarique Rahman is taking the reins... that's gonna be interesting to watch πŸ˜„

OMG 🀯 just heard about Khaleda Zia passing away at 80 πŸ™. That woman was EVERYTHING πŸ”₯ - a true leader, a rebel, a game changer πŸ’₯. She paved her own path, defied the odds, and never backed down from a fight 😈. I'm literally shook by the thought of not having her voice in politics anymore 😭. Can you believe she's been locked up for 10 yrs due to corruption accusations? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's so messed up πŸ’”. Anywayz, it's gonna be tough for Bangladesh to move on from this legend πŸ’«. My BNP vibes are strong rn πŸ’ͺ

😐 I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, 80 is old for someone with that kind of influence, you know? The whole country's gonna be buzzing about this, especially with her son taking over the BNP... πŸ€” Still, can't help but think that Zia's legacy is a bit messy. All those years under house arrest and now she's just chillin' abroad getting treatment... πŸ’Έ What's next? A special dispensation for the politicians who really need it? πŸ˜’

πŸ€” what's next for bangladesh now that Khaleda Zia is gone? like, they're already talkin' about elections and stuff... 10 years till the next one πŸ•°οΈ how's gonna affect the country? I don't know man, still skeptical 'bout all these politicians and their promises πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Tarique Rahman think he can just waltz in there and win? lol nah, not buying it 🚫.

πŸ˜” Khaleda Zia was such a polarizing figure in Bangladeshi politics... people either loved her or hated her, no in between 🀯 She played a huge role in opposing military rule and fighting for democracy, but at the same time, there were some shady allegations of corruption surrounding her πŸ€‘ It's interesting to see how she continued to campaign even after being convicted and imprisoned... that takes a lot of courage πŸ’ͺ But I think it's safe to say that she will be remembered as a strong-willed leader who fought for what she believed in πŸ’₯ The fact that her son is now returning to contest the elections makes me wonder if the BNP has any real shot at winning power πŸ€”

😱 I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we just lost our first female PM Khaleda Zia πŸ™ she was like a legend to me, even though we never really saw eye to eye on politics πŸ˜‚ her conviction for corruption was super rough but at least she kept speaking out against military rule and authoritarianism πŸ’ͺ it's crazy that her son Tarique is now stepping up as BNP leader... does anyone think he can fill his mom's shoes? πŸ€”

πŸ±πŸ˜• So sad to hear about Khaleda Zia's passing... she was such a big figure in Bangladeshi politics πŸ€” I always thought her rivalry with Sheikh Hasina was super intense 😬 how did two women who were basically on opposite sides of the spectrum be able to have a daughter like Tarique Rahman tho? πŸ‘€ didn't he kinda get caught up in all that family drama? πŸ’” Anyway, it's wild how much impact one person can have on politics 🀯 Bangladesh seems like such a complex place with so many interesting history threads πŸ“š

I'm kinda disappointed that she didn't live longer to see who's gonna win those elections now πŸ€”. Her legacy is super complicated, you know? People love her for fighting against military rule, but also hate her for the corruption stuff πŸ€‘. I think it's crazy how politics in Bangladesh can be so divisive - one minute people are cheering for Zia, next they're all about Sheikh Hasina πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. And now Tarique Rahman is back in the game? That's gonna be interesting 😏.

omg i cant believe she's really gone πŸ€• my mom was always saying how much she hated zia for all the corruption scandals but now that shes dead i feel kinda bad for her fam πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ my friends from bangladesh are super emotional rn, we were all watching the news together and it got really dramatic 😭 what a wild ride her life was, from being prime minister to going to prison and then back out again...i feel like shes left behind some kinda legacy though, whatever that means πŸ€”

She was quite the character πŸ˜‚. I mean, she had a pretty intense rivalry with Sheikh Hasina, but you gotta admire her spunk for keeping going despite being locked up and all that drama πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. And now, she's finally getting to rest, which is probably a relief after all those years of fighting πŸ”₯. It's crazy how politics can be so cutthroat, but at the end of the day, we've got to respect her for standing up for what she believed in ❀️. Her son Tarique Rahman might try to capitalize on this though πŸ€‘, which is gonna be interesting to see play out...

πŸ€” she was definitely a polarizing figure, but you can't deny her dedication to fighting for democracy in bangladesh πŸ‡§πŸ‡©. it's sad that her health issues came at such a crucial time, i mean, all this hubbub about elections now... πŸ™ƒ guess we'll just have to wait and see how the bnp does under tarique's leadership πŸ‘Š

πŸ™ 80 years young and still shaking things up... Khaleda Zia was definitely a force to be reckoned with πŸ’ͺ. Her legacy is complex, but you can't deny her dedication to fighting against military rule 🀝. It's interesting how she went from being PM twice to going down in flames over corruption charges πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Her health struggles at the end are heartbreaking πŸ˜”. Guess it's back to basics for Bangladesh now... will the opposition be able to capitalize on her son's return to politics? βš”οΈ Only time'll tell

man she lived a good life and left a mark on bangladesh's history u gotta respect that πŸ™ even though she had her ups and downs with Sheikh hasina and all that drama but hey at least she stood up for what she believed in πŸ’ͺ now the country can finally move forward from all the politics and drama surrounding her legacy πŸ‘‹
