Charges considered after child drowns at Oakland County Athletic Club - Detroit Metro Times

Two women who left six children, aged from four to twelve years old, unattended in a pool for 35 minutes are facing potential criminal charges. The incident occurred at the Deer Lake Athletic Club in Independence Township, Oakland County, where the children were alone in the pool when one of them drowned.

The two women had left the pool area to order food and drinks from the restaurant and bar that was open during the evening. When they returned, one of their nieces or nephews was submerged underwater and pulled out by another sibling. Emergency responders took the child to a hospital where she died due to drowning.

Pool signs clearly state that no lifeguard is present and that children younger than 16 must be supervised in the pool area. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office characterized the death as tragic and preventable, noting that life preservers were not provided with the children during their unsupervised period.

Steve Dolnut, a former Detroit police assistant chief, condemned the women's actions as child neglect. He stated that leaving kids unattended in a pool, even if there are toys or other safety devices present, is child neglect at the bare minimum.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard also expressed his concern over the incident, which he said was preventable with proper supervision. The sheriff's office noted that while pool toys and noodles were available in the water, no life preservers were left with the children during their unsupervised period.

The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing evidence to determine whether charges will be filed against the two women involved. Potential charges could include child endangerment or other felony offenses, depending on the circumstances and the prosecutor's evaluation of the evidence.

Wow ๐Ÿ˜ฑ this is just insane... how can u leave 6 kids alone in a pool for that long?! poor kid died ๐Ÿค• the whole thing seems so preventable, like they didnt even think about the risks ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ and the pool signs are pretty clear too ๐Ÿ“ i dont think they should be let off easy tho ๐Ÿ‘Ž

๐Ÿ˜ž I'm still shaking my head over this one... can't even imagine leaving your kids alone in a pool for 35 minutes without proper supervision. It's not just about the life preservers, it's about being present and responsible. I know we all make mistakes, but this is just plain reckless. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ As a parent myself, the thought of my own kids being in that situation is terrifying. Thankfully, there was another kid nearby to help... what if there wasn't? ๐Ÿ’” These two women need to be held accountable and I'm glad the authorities are taking this seriously. ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ

omg this is so bad ๐Ÿคฏ those 2 moms are literally putting their kids lives at risk by leaving them unsupervised in a pool for that long 35 minutes?!๐Ÿ˜ฑ what if another sibling hadn't been there to save the kid? would they have still left them in the water? anyway, i think it's really sad that this had to happen and now one of those little kids is gone ๐Ÿค•

i mean we all know how important pool safety is (we learned about it in health class last year!) and it's crazy that these moms didn't follow the rules. life preservers are a must when you have kids under 16 around the pool, it's not even optional ๐ŸŒŠ

anyway, i just hope those moms get the help they need to be better parents and not put their kids in harm's way again ๐Ÿ’•

omg this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค• 35 minutes left alone in a pool with no lifeguard supervision is just not acceptable, you know? I mean, those kids were literally sittin' ducks ๐Ÿฆ†. And it's not like they didn't have access to pool toys and noodles, but seriously how hard is it to use a life preserver?! I feel so bad for that little girl who lost her life, it's just devastating ๐Ÿ˜ข. I think the sheriff is right on the money with this one, proper supervision is key, especially when you've got kids swimmin' around in water ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ. The fact that those two women didn't take responsibility and left their kids to fend for themselves is just plain irresponsible ๐Ÿ™„. Fingers crossed they get charged and maybe some accountability comes out of this ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿคฏ This is just heartbreaking... I mean, you know the pool rules are pretty clear - kids under 16 need supervision, no lifeguard on duty at night, etc. It's not that hard to follow basic safety protocols when it comes to your own nieces/nephews. Six kids left alone in a pool for over 35 minutes? That's just crazy talk! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I mean, what were they thinking? Did they really think no one would notice or that the kids would be okay if they got caught in something bad? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ And now this poor child is dead... it's just devastating. ๐Ÿ˜”

I cant believe this is 2025 and we're still seein people leavin kids alone at pools? ๐Ÿคฏ Like what was goin on in them minds? Six kids just chillin with no adult supervision? That's just crazy! And it's even worse that they didn't have life preservers, which is like the bare minimum when you got little ones swimmin around. I'm all for people bein' responsible and takin care of their kids, but this is just reckless endangerment 101 ๐Ÿšซ. I hope the prosecutor's office takes a good hard look at this and charges 'em with somethin'. You can't just leave kids to die in a pool, period. ๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿ˜’ I dont think these 2 chicks did anything wrong... like wut's the big deal? Kids are meant to swim & learn 2 swim with supervision... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ leaving them alone 4 a few mins wont kill 'em... ๐Ÿšซ pool rules r clear but who doesnt read ๐Ÿ“– anyway?! ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Unbelievable! Who leaves six kids alone in a pool for 35 minutes?! ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐ŸŒŠ [GIF: a kid trying to swim while having their hair washed by a kid]

Child neglect 101: just because there are toys in the pool, doesn't mean you can leave kids unattended! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšซ [GIF: a cartoon character saying "oops"]

Proper supervision is key, folks! Don't be like these two ladies... ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ‘Ž

I mean come on ๐Ÿคฏ... those 2 moms just left their kids unattended in a pool for like 35 minutes?! That's not just irresponsible, that's neglectful ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I get it, life preservers aren't always necessary if you've got toys and stuff to keep them safe, but still... the fact that they're not being supervised is what's the big issue here ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

And now one of those kids has died, and people are saying it was preventable? Preventable! That just breaks my heart ๐Ÿ’”. I know pool signs say no lifeguard and all that, but who makes sure those signs are taken seriously in the first place? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It's just so frustrating when you think about it... there's a way to be responsible and fun as a parent, but sometimes people just don't get it ๐Ÿ™„. I hope those 2 moms take some time to reflect on what they did (or didn't do) and maybe, just maybe, learn from this tragedy ๐Ÿ’”

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ, this is just heartbreaking! I mean, who leaves six kids alone in a pool for 35 minutes? That's just not right ๐Ÿ˜ก. I'm glad that emergency responders were there to respond quickly, but it's still devastating that one of them lost their life. The fact that the women left them unattended without even checking on them before leaving is just reckless ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ.

I don't get how people can be so careless with kids' lives. I mean, pool signs are super clear: "No lifeguard present" and "Supervise children under 16". It's not like it's rocket science ๐Ÿš€. And yeah, life preservers should've been left with them just in case.

This whole incident is just a huge wake-up call for parents and caregivers to be more responsible when it comes to their kids' safety. I hope the women involved face serious consequences for their actions ๐Ÿค”.

๐Ÿคฏ come on, how can you just leave six kids unattended in a pool for 35 minutes?! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ˜ฑ they're literally just waiting for something to go wrong... like that poor kid who drowned! ๐Ÿ™ it's child neglect at its worst. and yeah, no life preservers? what are the chances of one kid being able to save another from drowning without some kinda safety gear? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I'm all for kids having fun in pools, but you gotta have a grown-up nearby to make sure everything's cool. it's not rocket science! ๐Ÿ’ก

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one ๐Ÿคฏ... I mean, how can you even leave six kids alone in a pool for 35 minutes?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ It's just not right. I know accidents happen, but this sounds like sheer negligence to me. Those poor kids were basically playing with fire ๐Ÿ’จ and nobody was paying attention. The fact that the pool signs are clear about no lifeguard supervision doesn't excuse leaving the kids alone, it just highlights how ridiculous it is that people would think they can get away with it ๐Ÿ™„. And what really gets me is that those women seem like they were just taking a quick break to grab some food and drinks... I mean, what's more important, your social life or your kids' safety? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ The fact that the sheriff says it's preventable with proper supervision makes me wonder if this was just a case of people not knowing better ๐Ÿ’ก.

๐Ÿค• this whole thing just reeks of gross negligence. I mean, what kind of parents leave their kids unattended in a pool for 35 minutes?! It's not like they were at the gym or something, but nope, they left them to fend for themselves. And to make matters worse, there were other siblings present who should've been supervising the little ones too. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ I'm shocked that pool signs weren't more clear, but come on, how many times do you have to see it before you get the point?! It's not like they were trying to be malicious or anything, but still... ๐Ÿ˜’ these two women are lucky if they don't face serious charges. And what about the other kids? Were they shaken up by this whole ordeal or whatever? ๐Ÿค•

This incident has got me really thinking... I mean, I've seen parents get in trouble for leaving their kids in cars unattended or something, but this is just crazy! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The pool signs are super clear, it says no lifeguard, so you'd think even with toys and noodles in the water, it's still not a safe place to leave kids unsupervised. And 35 minutes?! That's way too long for kids that age to be on their own, especially with one of them ending up in the drink... ๐Ÿคฏ It's just common sense, you know? Make sure your kids are accounted for at all times when they're around water, even if it's just a pool. I hope the prosecutor does her due diligence and throws the book at these two ladies... this kind of recklessness is just not acceptable! ๐Ÿ’”

I AM ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS ABOUT THIS STORY!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ TWO WOMEN LEAVING SIX YOUNG CHILDREN UNATTENDED IN A POOL FOR 35 MINUTES?!?! IS THAT NOT THE ULTIMATE FORM OF DISREGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE?!?! I MEAN, COME ON PEOPLE! IF YOU'RE GOING TO LEAVE KIDS ALONE IN A POOL, AT LEAST USE SOME COMMON SENSE AND PROVIDE LIFESPVERS FOR THEM! IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE! ๐Ÿคฏ THE FACT THAT THE POOL SIGNS CLEARLY STATE THAT NO LIFEGUARD IS PRESENT AND CHILDREN UNDER 16 MUST BE SUPERVISED IN THE POOL AREA MAKES IT EVEN WORSE. HOW COULD THESE WOMEN HAVE BEEN SO RECKLESS?!?!

Ugh I cant even imagine leaving my own kids alone in a pool for 35 minutes... its just so reckless & irresponsible what those two women did ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. Like they knew better but chose to ignore it anyway. And yeah, pool signs are clear but that doesn't make up for them not taking responsibility or looking out for the kids ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ. I think the prosecution should definitely look into this & take action - child neglect is no joke ๐Ÿ’”.

lol what a nightmare ๐Ÿ˜ฑ these two ladies are totally gross ๐Ÿคข leaving those six kids alone in the pool for 35 whole minutes is not just irresponsible it's criminal ๐Ÿš” they're basically saying 'oh we'll just grab some grub while our kids drown' umm no ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ and yeah steve dolnut gets a pass for being super harsh but honestly who can't see how bad this looks ๐Ÿ‘€ the fact that pool signs are clear as day is just an excuse ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ you don't need a lifeguard to know not to leave little kids unsupervised in a pool ๐Ÿ’”

I'm so shocked by this news ๐Ÿคฏ. Leaving six kids unattended in a pool for 35 minutes is just not okay ๐Ÿ˜“. I mean, you can't put a price on a kid's life, right? ๐Ÿค‘ It's one thing to leave them with toys and safety devices, but to think that no life preservers were needed because the pool had those things... it just don't compute ๐Ÿค”. And what really gets me is that these women knew the rules - they saw the signs saying no lifeguard and kids under 16 must be supervised. So why did they still do it? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I'm all for a good party, but not at the expense of innocent lives ๐ŸŽ‰. It's like they were thinking "Oh, we've got this" without even realizing the risks ๐Ÿ’”. This case is going to be all over the news and rightly so - these women need to be held accountable ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

omg can u even imagine leaving 6 kids in a pool for like 35 min with no lifeguard & no life preservers?? that's just not right ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜จ the fact that they had to order food & drinks while leaving the kids alone is just insane, and now one of them is DEAD ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’” i dont think they should be charged with anything else but this... they clearly showed NO regard for their own nieces & nephews' lives. how can u even call yourself a responsible adult? ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ก
