Winter Olympics 2026: South Korean ski pair disqualified over use of banned wax

Two South Korean cross-country skiers, Dasom Han and Eui-jin Lee, have been disqualified from the qualification round for the women's classic sprint event at the Winter Olympics. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) announced that their equipment tested positive for fluorinated ski wax, which has been banned by the FIS since the 2023-24 season.

Fluorinated wax, also known as "forever chemical," is a water-repellent substance that was originally used on sailboats to make them glide better. It was introduced to skiing in the 1980s and has been linked to several health problems and environmental concerns due to its inability to biodegrade.

The FIS ruled that Han and Lee had violated a rule that bans fluorinated wax because it can be a competitive advantage. The pair, who were not expected to medal at the Milan-Cortina Games, were instead ranked 157th and 158th in the World Cup respectively going into the competition.

This latest development highlights the ongoing efforts by the FIS and other governing bodies to crack down on doping in winter sports, particularly in cross-country skiing. The ban on fluorinated wax is part of a broader push to reduce the environmental impact of ski equipment and ensure fair play among athletes.

ugh this is so crazy 🀯 i mean who uses that stuff anyway? like sailboats or whatever but seriously ski wax shouldnt be that hard to regulate lol. cant believe these girls got caught tho 😬 and now their worlds cup hopes are just... gone πŸ’” at least its good for the environment though, idk how many more "forever chemicals" we can take πŸŒŽπŸ’€

ugh, another doping scandal πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ... can't say I'm surprised though, it's like they all just try to cheat to get ahead in the world cup rankings 🏎️. but seriously, fluorinated wax is such a dirty substance and its effects on the environment are no joke πŸ’”. at the same time, it's crazy that these athletes got caught up in it and now their Olympic dreams are gone 😞. i guess it's all about finding a balance between progress and fair play, right? πŸ’ͺ... anyway, I hope the other skiers stay clean and show everyone what they're made of 🌟

can't believe these two Koreans got caught with that forever chemical πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ... like, didn't they know it was bad for the environment and stuff? but on a serious note, gotta give props to the FIS for being all strict about this fluorinated wax ban - those athletes should've checked their equipment before hitting the slopes πŸ’¨. cross-country skiing's already tough enough without worrying about getting disqualified because of some dodgy wax... guess you can't have it both ways: speed and sustainability πŸ”οΈπŸ’ͺ

omg didnt they know about the ban? i mean idk how many times weve heard this story but still... fluoro waxes are so last season lol. its like, come on guys! do you really need that extra oomph? and btw, 157th & 158th in the world cup is pretty embarrassing. they musta been using a different product or something. anyway, good for the FIS for finally taking action though πŸ™πŸ’ͺ

I'm so bummed for Dasom Han and Eui-jin Lee πŸ€•. They seemed like total underdogs going into that competition, but now it's all about their team and how they handled the situation... I mean, who knew fluorinated wax was a thing in ski racing? πŸ˜‚ It's crazy to think about how far-reaching its effects are - from health issues to environmental concerns 🌎. But hey, at least the FIS is being proactive about cracking down on doping and keeping it fair for everyone involved πŸ’ͺ. Can't wait to see what happens next in the World Cup! πŸ”οΈ

πŸ‚πŸ˜¬ I'm shocked that these skiers got disqualified for something they might not even have known about their equipment πŸ€”. It's like, what's the point of all this testing when it comes down to a tiny mistake or miscommunication with your supplier? πŸ™„ And another thing, fluorinated wax is basically banned everywhere except in winter sports πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Can't we just have one set of rules for everyone? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ It's like, I get that doping is bad, but can't it be handled in a more nuanced way? 🀝

On the bright side, it's good to see the FIS cracking down on this stuff and trying to make things fairer for athletes πŸ…. But, man, it feels like we're just moving the goalposts here ⚽️. Can't we just have clean equipment that doesn't affect anyone's health or environment? πŸ’š

I'm so bummed for Dasom Han and Eui-jin Lee πŸ€•. I think it's crazy that fluorinated wax is still used in skiing, like it's not even a thing anymore πŸ’¦. I mean, we've known about the environmental concerns and health issues with this stuff since forever! 🌎 It's just so unfair to athletes who don't have access to the latest gear, you know?

And what really gets me is that these skiers were getting away with it all these years πŸ˜’. The FIS needs to be on top of its game when it comes to enforcing the rules and keeping things fair πŸ™Œ. I hope this ban sends a clear message that doping won't fly in winter sports anymore πŸ’ͺ.

ugh πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ i feel bad for dasom & eui-jin, but like, its not just them... all skiers are now at risk of getting caught with fluorinated wax in their gear 😬 the fis is trying to protect the environment and keep it fair for everyone. its a good thing they're cracking down on this stuff, even if it means some athletes get DQ'd πŸ€• i guess we can't have it both ways - the thrill of competition vs the health & planet πŸŒŽπŸ’š

omg i'm so disappointed for dasom and eui-jin! 😱 they seemed like such promising skiers πŸ‚πŸ’¨ but it's all about the rules, right? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ at least the fis is taking a stand against fluorinated wax - we need to protect our environment & athletes alike πŸ’šπŸŒΏ let's hope this is a wake-up call for everyone involved πŸš¨πŸ’‘

The recent disqualification of Dasom Han and Eui-jin Lee from the qualification round for the women's classic sprint event at the Winter Olympics serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against doping in winter sports πŸ”οΈ. The introduction of fluorinated wax, also known as "forever chemical," has had far-reaching consequences for both human health and the environment, rendering it imperative that governing bodies like the FIS take decisive action to crack down on its use.

OMG, this is soooo not cool πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ! I mean, I get that they wanna make sure everyone's being fair and all, but come on, fluorinated wax was already banned for a reason! It's like they're trying to send a message about the environment, but then they go ahead and disqualify these athletes who might not even be super competitive anyway πŸ™„. I feel bad for Dasom Han and Eui-jin Lee - they must be so bummed out right now πŸ˜”. But at the same time, I get why the FIS is doing it... pollution and all that jazz πŸ’š. Can't we just find a better way to make ski equipment eco-friendly? πŸ€”

πŸ€” I'm not surprised to see these girls get DQ'd from the Olympics. I mean, who doesn't know about the dangers of fluorinated wax? It's like something out of a spy movie - they're sneaking around trying to gain an edge and it just gets caught on camera! πŸ˜‚ Seriously though, I hope Dasom and Eui-jin are okay and that they can learn from this experience. Cross-country skiing is such a beautiful sport, but safety and fair play have to come first. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for other skiers to switch to eco-friendly waxes? πŸŒΏπŸ’š

Ugh, I'm so fed up with this forever chemical stuff 🀯! It's crazy that these two South Korean skiers got disqualified for using it in their wax. I mean, yeah, we get it, FIS wants to keep it clean and all, but come on... they're just trying to level the playing field. I've heard some concerns about fluorinated wax being bad for the environment too, which is a big bummer πŸ’”.

I'm not saying these athletes intentionally tried to cheat, but it's still not cool that they got caught using something that's supposed to be banned. Maybe if FIS just made more clear rules and guidelines from the get-go, this wouldn't happen πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. It's like, let's all just try to ski in peace and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery without worrying about who's got the "right" wax πŸ’¨.

The whole point of competitions is supposed to be fair play and good sportsmanship, not exploiting loopholes or testing limits πŸ†πŸ‘Ž.

omg this is so crazy like i cant even imagine trying to compete without that stuff we use it all the time in shop class πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ i mean im no expert but fluorinated wax sounds sketchy what if its really bad for the environment lol gotta give props to the FIS for taking action and making sure everyone plays fair tho

ugh i dont get why they havent banned it yet fluorinated wax sounds like such a no-brainer πŸ˜’ like whats next gonna be using that stuff in our cars or something πŸš—πŸ’¨ anyway its good to see the FIS takin steps to keep it clean, cross-country skiing is all about bein one with nature, right? snowflakes and all that ❄️

OMG, I'm literally shaking my head about this one 🀯! Dasom Han and Eui-jin Lee getting disqualified from the Olympics for using fluorinated wax on their skis? It's like, come on guys, you're not exactly breaking new ground here πŸ˜‚. The FIS has been cracking down on doping for ages, but does anyone ever think about the athletes themselves who might be struggling to afford proper equipment πŸ€‘? And now they're getting punished for trying to level the playing field? I mean, I get it, fluorinated wax is bad news for the environment and all that jazz, but can't we just have a conversation about how to address this issue instead of demonizing the athletes who use it? πŸ€”

I think it's kinda crazy that they caught them using fluorinated wax 🀯. Like, I get why it's banned - it's bad for the environment and stuff. But at the same time, I feel like it's still pretty harsh to disqualify them from the Olympics πŸ˜•. I mean, they didn't exactly win or anything... 157th and 158th is not great, but it's not like they were cheating on steroids or something πŸ€ͺ. Maybe the FIS should just focus on making sure everyone follows the rules instead of being super strict all the time? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” I'm not surprised to see those two skiers get disqualified. I mean, we all know how toxic that fluorinated wax can be. It's crazy they didn't catch it earlier in the qualification round... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I feel bad for Dasom Han and Eui-jin Lee, but at the same time, it's like, if you're gonna take a risk, don't expect to win and get disqualified. The FIS is trying to make things fair, which is great. We gotta protect those athletes' health and the environment too πŸ’š

OMG, this is like such bad news for those skiers!!! I was rooting for Dasom Han & Eui-jin Lee πŸ€• they were supposed to make it to the Olympics and now they're out because of fluorinated wax πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ that stuff's so toxic! I'm all about fair play in sports, and if fluorinated wax is a competitive advantage, then yeah, it should be banned 🚫. The FIS is doing the right thing by cracking down on this stuff, especially since it's linked to health problems & environmental concerns 🌎. Hope Dasom Han & Eui-jin Lee can appeal or something? 🀞
