The Dead of Winter by Sarah Clegg audiobook review – haunting Christmas tales

"A Haunting Christmas: Uncovering the Dark Side of Winter"

This spellbinding audiobook, "The Dead of Winter" by Sarah Clegg, serves as a stark contrast to the cheerful image we often associate with Christmas. Instead of sugarplums and presents, Clegg delves into the darker, forgotten traditions that once accompanied the festive season in 19th-century Europe.

In a chilling and captivating narrative, historian and folklorist Sarah Clegg recounts an array of unsettling customs, from Sweden's "year walk" tradition to Austria's Krampus night festivities. On Christmas Eve, she embarks on a pre-dawn stroll through a graveyard, reenacting the ancient Swedish ritual that offers glimpses into one's future and "shadowy enactments of impending burials".

Clegg also shares tales of ghostly apparitions, witches, and mythical creatures – horned figures rampaging through streets in Salzburg, witches tormenting children who haven't completed their chores, and an Icelandic ogress who kidnaps people to turn them into stew. It's a world where Christmas teems with monsters.

Antonia Beamish brings these eerie stories to life with her mesmerizing narration, infusing the text with mischief and menace. As Clegg notes, the more we peer beyond the twinkly façade of modern Christmas celebrations, the darker, more sinister side of winter emerges.

This thought-provoking audiobook is a must-listen for anyone looking to shake off the festive cheer and uncover the shadows that lurk beneath. So, this winter's eve, why not take a walk on the dark side and join Sarah Clegg on her haunting journey through the dead of winter?

ugh i know some ppl love christmas but like can we talk about how messed up some of these old traditions were 🤯?? sweden's year walk tradition is literally just a bunch of ppl walking around in the dark trying to predict their future & it sounds super sketchy. and those krampus night festivities? who thought that was a good idea?! 😱 i mean, cant we just stick to some festive cheer and goodwill instead of embracing all this dark magic stuff 🎄

The things we do for love... 🕷️ It's easy to get caught up in the commercialized magic of Christmas, but it's refreshing to remember that even the most festive of seasons can have a darker side. This audiobook is like a dark, twisted fairy tale - you'll be both chilled and entertained!

🎄👻 This audiobook sounds like it's straight outta a Tim Burton movie 🤪. I mean, who knew Christmas was all about ghosts, witches, and monsters?! It's like they're trying to ruin our festive vibes 🎅. But at the same time, I'm kinda intrigued by these old traditions... did you know that some of these customs were actually meant to ward off evil spirits? 🕷️💀 Maybe this book will be more than just a spooky tale... maybe it's a reminder that there's always more to Christmas than meets the eye 😏.

omg u guys gotta listen to this audiobook "The Dead of Winter" by Sarah Clegg it's literally soooo creepy!! i love how she explores the darker customs that used to be a part of christmas in 19th century europe like, who knew sweden had a tradition where people would go for a walk at midnight to predict their future?? 🕷️ and the stories about krampus being this scary horned figure are giving me CHILLS!! Antonia Beamish's narration is perfection 🎧

OMG, I just finished listening to "The Dead of Winter" by Sarah Clegg 🎃👻 and it was SOOOO creepy! I mean, who knew Christmas had such a dark side? 😱 Like, I've always associated Christmas with Santa and snowflakes, but this book is like, the total opposite – it's all about witches, ghostly apparitions, and monsters 🧛‍♀️👺. The way Sarah Clegg weaves these stories together is so masterful, it's like you're right there with her, wandering through those dark graveyard streets at midnight 🔮💀. And Antonia Beamish's narration? 💥 She brings this whole dark winter wonderland to life in the most amazing way! I'm totally hooked now 📚👻. Can't wait to listen to more of Sarah Clegg's work!

I don’t usually comment but I just got done listening to that audiobook and it gave me the chills 😱. I mean, who knew Christmas had so many creepy traditions hidden beneath all that festive cheer? The idea of a 'year walk' where people would go grave robbing on Christmas Eve? That's some wild stuff 🤯. And Antonia Beamish’s narration is insane, she makes you feel like you're right there with Sarah Clegg exploring the darker side of winter. I think it’s pretty cool how this book challenges our expectations of Christmas and makes us think about all the weird stuff that’s been left behind over time 👻.

The darker side of Christmas... it's like they say, the more we try to hide the truth, the more it seems to appear. I mean, think about it, we spend all year preparing for this one night where everyone puts on a smile and pretends to be merry. But what if that's just a mask? What if our true selves are just as dark and twisted as the old traditions that Sarah Clegg uncovered? 🌑️ It's like, we're so afraid of being judged or ridiculed that we hide behind all this cheeriness. But what's really going on beneath the surface? Is it really as bright and beautiful as we think, or is it just a facade? 💔 I guess that's what makes this audiobook so fascinating – it forces us to confront the shadows within ourselves.

I'm totally obsessed with this audiobook! I mean, who knew Christmas could be so... dark? 🤔🎄 It's like they say, there's more to the festive season than just presents and tree decorations. The way Sarah Clegg weaves these spooky tales together is pure magic. I love how she delves into all these forgotten traditions from Europe - it's like a fascinating history lesson, but with a creepy twist! 😱 Antonia Beamish's narration is top notch too, gives me chills every time 🎃️. Definitely gonna listen to this again before Christmas.

Ugh, I love how some Christmas traditions are still super creepy 🎃🕷️... like those year walks in Sweden, that's straight outta a horror movie! And don't even get me started on Krampus night, who thought it was a good idea to have a half-goat, half-demon creature chasing people around? 😂 But at the same time, I appreciate how this audiobook is like, shedding light on all these weird and wild customs that got lost in history. It's cool how Sarah Clegg brings them back to life with Antonia Beamish's narration 🎧... still not sure if I'd wanna reenact any of those graveyard strolls though 😅

idk what's wrong with christmas already, do we really need a bunch of creepy old traditions to go along with it? i mean, "year walk" sounds like something my grandma would make me do when i was 12 lol 🤣 anyway, this audiobook might be kinda cool if you're into that whole dark winter vibe, but i'd rather just stick to eating cookies and watching elf movies 🍪🎄

🎄 I'm low-key obsessed with this audiobook, The Dead of Winter, it's like someone took all the festive fun outta Christmas and gave me nightmares instead 😱. I love how it makes you realize there's more to the holiday season than just presents and turkey... all those creepy traditions in 19th-century Europe are wild 🤪. And Antonia Beamish's narration is, like, perfect for setting a spooky atmosphere 🔮. I might need some sleep after listening to this, though 😴. The way it shows you there's a darker side to Christmas that's still out there, waiting to be explored... it's pretty thought-provoking 🤔. Definitely a must-listen for anyone looking to shake off the merriment and get into the weird stuff 🎃.
