The Boomer boom fueling early voting turnout in NYC mayor’s race

A Shift in the Boomer's Favor: Early Voting Turnout Reveals a Changing Face of NYC Mayoral Election

In a surprising twist, older voters are driving heavy turnout in New York City's mayoral election, with those 55 and above making up over half of all early voters. This shift marks a significant departure from previous elections, where younger voters have historically dominated early voting.

The numbers tell a story: as of Tuesday, a total of 297,718 people had cast their ballots through the end of day, surpassing the 169,879 who voted early during the entire nine-day period four years ago. This surge in early voting is a sign of an engaged electorate, particularly among older voters.

According to analysis by Gothamist, the largest share of early voting comes from voters between 65 and 74 years old, with those 55-64 making up nearly 17% of the total turnout. In contrast, younger voters aged 25-34 make up just 16%.

This shift in demographics is being attributed to a number of factors, including Andrew Cuomo's independent candidacy and his campaign's strong focus on appealing to older voters. Cuomo has been campaigning heavily among this age group, touting his experience and ability to run the city.

Mamdani supporters, on the other hand, are enthusiastic about their candidate's platform, which includes measures such as free buses and rent freezes for rent-stabilized tenants. However, some have criticized Mamdani's proposals as "Trumpian" in their scope, with one supporter joking that she needs to grow up before taking office.

While the early numbers may give Cuomo an edge among older voters, analysts are cautioning against reading too much into these results. Jerry Skurnik, a longtime Democratic political consultant, notes that voter turnout patterns can be influenced by various factors, including the availability of voting options and local politics.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen how the early voting numbers will translate into overall voter turnout on Election Day. One thing is clear, however: this election is shaping up to be a generational battle at the ballot box, with different age groups weighing in on the candidates' platforms and qualifications.

I'm thinking, like, have you guys noticed how the younger crowd isn't really voting as much? I mean, compared to older people, they're literally making up like 30% less of the early voters. It's kinda weird because I thought for sure the younger generation would be all about voting left and right these days. But maybe it's just cuz Cuomo is talking their language or something?

And what's with this "Trumpian" thing tho? I don't really get why people are throwing that around. Can't we just focus on who the candidate is and what they want to do for NYC instead of comparing them to some other politician? Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out on election day! 🤔

🤔 I'm kinda surprised to see older voters making up half of all early voters in NYC's mayoral election... like, 55+ yrs old? 🙄 I mean, I get it, they're getting more engaged or whatever, but still... wasn't this gonna be a younger voter thing? 😂 Andrew Cuomo's campaign being super targeted at older voters is def an interesting move tho... maybe he's onto something there? 🤓 And what's with Mamdani's supporters saying she needs to "grow up" before taking office? 🙄 Like, isn't that just code for "she's not old enough"? 😂 Anyway, it'll be pretty interesting to see how this plays out on election day... fingers crossed for a more diverse turnout 🤞

idk about this shift in voters its kinda weird 2 c older ppl makin up most of early votin 4 NYC mayoral elec 😒 my grandma voted & all but i dunno if its a good ting 4 Cuomo or not 🤔 he seems like a decent guy tho might b more exprienced dan mamdani tho dont get me wrong im pro rent freezes & free buses lol but idk bout the trumpian stuff Mamdani needs 2 work on her image but atm shes got some solid points 🤑

OMG u guys 🤯 NYC mayoral election is getting real! So apparently 55+ yrs old ppl r makin up over 50% of all early voters? That's like, a huge shift from previous elections where younger folks were dominatin the polls 📈. According to Gothamist, voters aged 65-74 are killin it with 21% of the total turnout? Meanwhile, younger folks aged 25-34 r only makin up 16% 🤷‍♀️.

I think Andrew Cuomo's campaign is genius for focusin on appealin to older voters 🙌. He's got that experience factor goin for him. And Mamdani supporters r passionate about her platform, but some ppl are like "hold up, this is gettin too Trumpian" 😂.

But here's the thing: we gotta keep it in perspective 🤔. Voter turnout patterns can be all over the place, dependin on factors like voting options and local politics. And only time will tell if Cuomo's edge among older voters translates to overall voter turnout on Election Day 🕰️.

This election is def shapin up to be a generational battle, with different age groups weighin in on candidates' platforms and qualifications 💪. Can't wait to see what happens next! 🤞

🤔 I wonder what's behind this shift in demographics? Is it just that older voters are feeling more engaged or are they being courted by Cuomo's campaign specifically? 🤑 I mean, who wouldn't want free buses and rent freezes? 😴 But seriously, is Mamdani's platform really going to resonate with most people? I'm curious about how this plays out on Election Day... will younger voters come out in full force or are they staying home? 🤷‍♀️ And what does it all mean for the city's future? Will Cuomo's experience be enough to win over the votes of older New Yorkers, or is there something else at play here? 🤝

🤝 I gotta say, its kinda cool to see older folks making their voices heard in the NYC mayoral election. Like, 55+ years old, that's not exactly what you'd expect from early voters. Could be a sign of things changing for the better, you know? More people feeling empowered to participate in the democratic process at any age. Plus, its interesting to see how Cuomo is doing well among this demographic - maybe he was onto something with his campaign strategy! 💡

omg I cant believe its older folks driving the turnout here 🤯 I mean Cuomo is probs gonna kill it among the 55+ crowd if he can keep them engaged I feel like Mamdani's got a tough road ahead tho if she wants to win over the youth vote I think the whole "needs to grow up" thing was super rich coming from someone who's been running on a platform of free buses lol 🚌😂

🤯 I'm seeing some pretty interesting demographics here and I gotta wonder if this trend will stick. I mean, Andrew Cuomo's campaign has been really aggressive in reaching out to older voters, but is that just a one-off or is he onto something? The fact that Mamdani supporters are so excited about her platform is awesome, but we need to make sure she can deliver on those promises 🚂🏠. I'm also curious to see how this plays out among younger voters - will they come out in force on Election Day or will Cuomo's edge with older voters be enough? This election is gonna be all about who shows up and makes their voice heard 💪

I'm lovin' this vibe of older voters gettin' out and exercisin' their right to vote! It's like they're sayin', "Hey world, we're still here and we care about our city!" 🤩 And I gotta give it up for Andrew Cuomo, he's makin' some serious moves by focusin' on this age group. Maybe it's a sign that the younger folks are gettin' a little too burnt out from all the hustle and bustle of adult life? Either way, it's awesome to see so many people engaged in the democratic process. And hey, if Mamdani's proposals get some traction, maybe we'll see some real change happen for rent-stabilized tenants and public transportation. 🚌💕

I'm like so confused about why older people are suddenly voting more than younger ones 🤔 I mean, don't get me wrong, it's cool that they're getting involved and all, but what's changed? Was there a new rule or something? And btw, have you guys seen those funny memes on Instagram about the mayor election? 😂 I was looking at them with my friends and we were all like "what even is going on?" 🤷‍♀️

idk about this trend... older folks making up half of all early voters? seems like a weird shift 🤔. i mean, i get that Andrew Cuomo's campaign is trying to appeal to that demographic, but isn't it weird that they're going for the boomer vote? shouldn't that be, like, a minority group or something? 🤑

OMG u guys I'm literally freaking out about this NYC mayoral election 🤯! So like I just checked out the early voting numbers and it's totally not what I expected - older voters are CRUSHING IT 📊! Like seriously 55+ making up half of all early voters is wild. And from what I've seen online, Mamdani supporters are SO hyped about her platform, but some people are also kinda salty about it being "Trumpian" 🤔. But honestly I think Cuomo's strategy is genius - who doesn't love a good experience factor? 😎 Anyway, I'm keeping an eye on this election and I'm excited to see how it all plays out... fingers crossed for a low-key candidate win 🤞!
