Summerwater review – back out of the room slowly and carefully … this bleak drama is a mess

A Desolate Getaway: Summerwater Falls Flat

Channel 4's latest offering, Summerwater, is a bleak drama that, much like its titular setting, fails to leave a lasting impression. The show's central premise – six lochside cabins containing uniquely unhappy households on holiday – has all the makings of a compelling narrative, but in execution, it's a mess.

The series begins with a jarring interview by the police, which sets the tone for an anthology-style drama that fails to replicate the detailed inner monologues that made author Sarah Moss's novel a hit. Instead, Summerwater resorts to vague allusions and shots of Scottish landscapes to create an unsettling atmosphere, but at the expense of actual storytelling.

The main character, Justine (Valene Kane), is introduced as a wife struggling with her husband Steve (Daniel Rigby) and their emotionally inadequate kids. However, her backstory is reduced to simplistic tropes, leaving viewers wondering why she's behaving in such a manner. Her obsessive long runs are meant to be poignant but come across as shallow attempts at character development.

As the series progresses, we're introduced to more characters – an empty-nester couple (Dougray Scott and Shirley Henderson), a teenage boy (Calum Ross) struggling with rejection, and an Eastern European couple (Anna Prochniak and Arnas Fedaravicius) who are discriminated against by their British employers. Each character's tale is equally unsatisfying, relying on melodrama rather than genuine narrative substance.

The show's attempt to incorporate elements from other genres, like mind-horror and supernatural themes, falls flat. The mysterious dilapidated hut in the woods, meant to be a key plot point, feels more like a convenient plot device than an integral part of the story.

Ultimately, Summerwater is a drama that leaves you wanting to make a quick exit. With its meandering narrative, shallow character development, and lackluster storytelling, it's a holiday getaway that feels like a bad trip.

omg u guys summerwater is literally so bleh 🤦‍♀️ i mean i was hyped for a show about weird ppl on holiday but it just felt like they took every annoying trope from other shows and mashed them all together... like who introduces their character thru an interview? that was already cringey 😒 and don't even get me started on the shallow characters 🙄 justine's backstory is like "oh she's got problems, let's make her run a lot" 🏃‍♀️ yawn. anyway, i'm outta here 👋

Summerwater is such a missed opportunity 🌫️. I mean, the whole premise sounds so intriguing – six cabins with unhappy households on holiday in this desolate Scottish landscape... but it just falls flat. They could've really delved deeper into each character's backstory and explored their emotional struggles in a way that feels authentic, not just tacked on for drama's sake.

And don't even get me started on the plot twists 🤯. I was expecting so much more from those mind-horror themes they tried to incorporate. It's like they took some cool ideas and just... squished them into this mess of a show. The mystery of that dilapidated hut? More like an afterthought, in my opinion 😒.

I think the real problem is that Channel 4 was trying to do too much at once. They wanted to create this anthology-style drama with multiple storylines and characters... but it ends up feeling disjointed and unengaging. If they had focused on just one or two main storylines, I think Summerwater could've been something really special. But as it stands, it's just a skippable TV show 📺.

Ugh, I just finished watching Summerwater and man, what a total bummer! 🤕 I was expecting something deep and thought-provoking but instead I got a bunch of whiny characters who make poor life choices for no reason. And don't even get me started on the plot twists - they're so predictable you can see 'em coming from a mile away. The show's trying to be all artsy and atmospheric, but honestly it just feels like Channel 4 is phoning it in. I mean, where's the character development? Where's the substance? It's like they took all these interesting ideas and just...meh. 😐

just watched this new show summerwater and tbh i'm so underwhelmed 🤔🏠. the idea of these 6 cabins with all sorts of messed up families is actually kinda intriguing 🤞 but then they just go and ruin it with weak character development and a ton of cliches 🙄 like who introduces their back story through an interview lol what's next? also the use of mind horror and supernatural themes was just cringeworthy 🕷️. anyone else feel me on this one? 😒

🤔 I gotta say, this show is like a Brexit deal – all the promises are made, but in the end, you're left feeling let down. 🇬🇧 The premise is solid, but the execution is as dry as the Scottish Highlands in winter. It's like they took every great drama technique and just...phoned it in. 😴 The characters feel more like caricatures than real people, and don't even get me started on Justine's backstory – it's like they were trying to cram too many plot twists into a tiny narrative suitcase. 🎩 And what's with the lack of consequences for the characters' actions? It's like they're living in some kind of fictional utopia where nothing ever gets resolved. 🤷‍♂️ Overall, Summerwater is a disappointment – it's like a failed experiment that leaves you feeling underwhelmed and wanting to shake your head. 😐

omg u guyz summerwater is such a let down!!! i mean, the idea sounds so promising with all them cabins on lochside but in reality its just meh 🤔 the characters r so shallow and the story is literally just a bunch of random ppl having problems 🤷‍♀️ and dont even get me started on that one hut in the woods lol it felt like they were trying to force something but failed miserably 🚫 anywayz i was expecting more depth n substance from channel 4 i guess u can say summerwater is just a dud vacation rental 🚫

ugh, what happened to good TV dramas back in my day? 🤦‍♀️ this summerwater show is literally the most boring thing i've seen all year... just a bunch of whiny characters with no depth or real plot twists. and don't even get me started on the "mind-horror" stuff, sounds like something from one of those bad 90s TV series 📺 and what's up with the police interview at the beginning? feels like they're trying too hard to be edgy 😒 in my day, we had real actors and real writing, not this watered-down nonsense.

Wow 😐🏞️ Summerwater sounds like a total bummer of a show! 🤕 I was really hoping for something to grab my attention, but now I'm just disappointed 😔 The whole concept with the lochside cabins had so much potential, but it seems like it fell flat. I mean, what's up with the shallow character development? It's like they didn't even put in the effort to make them relatable 🤷‍♀️ Interesting that they tried to mix genres, but it just didn't work out 💔

I gotta say, I was really let down by this one 🤕. Channel 4 is usually on point with their dramas, but Summerwater just didn't do it for me. They had all the right ingredients - lochside cabins, unhappy households, and anthology-style storytelling - but they dropped the ball on execution 🏊‍♀️. I mean, who introduces a main character like Justine only to have her backstory be super basic? 🙄 And don't even get me started on how they handled the Eastern European couple's storyline... it felt really shallow and unfair 👎. Overall, Summerwater just didn't live up to its potential, which is a shame because I love a good drama 💔.

awww man i feel so disappointed 4 u 🤕 summerwater sounds like such a promising show but it seems like it fell flat in every aspect 😔 the premise is def interesting n all but the execution is just meh 🙄 the lack of character development is really frustrating esp with main character justine she's supposed 2 be a complex character but her backstory feels so basic n shallow 👎 i think channel 4 should've stuck w/ the detailed inner monologues from sarah moss's novel it would've been way more effective 📚 don't get me wrong, scottish landscapes r pretty but they can't make up for weak storytelling 😴 what do u think? did u have high hopes 4 this show or was it just a letdown 4 u?

Ugh 😩 I was so hyped for this show, but it totally fell flat 🤕. I mean, who doesn't love a good anthology series? But Summerwater just didn't deliver 💔. The atmosphere in the Scottish landscapes is super eerie, but that's where it ends for me 🌅. I need some substance in my drama, not just vague allusions and cheap thrills 😒. And don't even get me started on Justine's character - what's up with her backstory? 🤔 It feels like the writers were trying to pack too many plot points into one episode 📝. Can we please just get a more satisfying conclusion to the series? I'm still waiting for my happy ending 😭.

I just watched this show and I gotta say, I was really underwhelmed 😐. The whole setup sounds so promising – six cabins with weird families on holiday – but it falls flat for me. I mean, what happened to the character development? Justine's backstory is super vague and doesn't make sense. And don't even get me started on how they tried to incorporate all those other genres like mind-horror and supernatural. It just didn't work 🙅‍♂️. The show feels like it's trying too hard to be deep but ends up being shallow. I'd give it 2/5 stars, sadly.

🤔 I gotta say, this Summerwater show just didn't do it for me 📺. The idea of six lochside cabins with unique households on holiday sounds super intriguing, but the execution was pretty lackluster ⚠️. They went for a bleak drama vibe, which is cool, but instead of digging deeper into the characters' emotional struggles, they just kinda... existed 🤷‍♀️.

And don't even get me started on Justine's character 😒. Her backstory feels like it was written by someone who didn't really understand what makes people tick 🤔. The running scenes were supposed to be poignant, but they came off as super shallow 💨. I mean, where's the depth? Where's the complexity?

The way they wove together all these different storylines just felt like a mess 📝. It was like trying to drink from a firehose – too much information, not enough substance 💧. And that supernatural twist? Eh, it felt like they were trying too hard to be edgy 🔥.

I guess what really disappointed me was how Summerwater didn't deliver on its promises 🤦‍♂️. It's like they took all these interesting ideas and just...phoned it in 💬. All in all, I'd say this show is a pretty forgettable holiday watch 😴.

idk about this summerwater show 🤔... sounds like they took all the interesting parts of the book and just kinda... phoned it in i mean, an anthology-style drama with loads of unhappy households on holiday should be good for at least some solid storytelling but nah, they just kinda coasted on the scenery instead of actually developing the characters. and don't even get me started on that weird hut in the woods 🏠💀 felt like a lazy way to introduce some sort of mystery plot twist. anyway, if you're looking for a compelling drama, i'd say keep looking, summerwater's not worth the journey ⏰👎
