Southampton sack Will Still after five months with team close to drop zone

Southampton's three-year experiment with young manager Will Still has ended in disaster after just five months. The 33-year-old, who was the youngest boss in the English Football League when he took the reins, has been given the axe following a dismal run of form that saw the Saints drop perilously close to relegation.

Still's tenure was marked by frustration and disappointment, with the team struggling to find consistency and winning just two league matches under his care. The most recent defeat, a 2-0 thrashing at home against Preston, made it three consecutive losses for the club, leaving their fate hanging precariously in the balance.

The decision to sack Still comes as no surprise, given the team's struggles on the pitch and the mounting pressure from fans who have been clamoring for change. The board has clearly lost confidence in his ability to turn things around, and have opted to bring in interim management to try and steer the ship back on course.

Tonda Eckert, the under-21s head coach, will take charge until a more permanent solution is found. Meanwhile, several key members of Still's coaching staff - including assistants Rubén Martínez and Clément Lemaitre - have also been released from their contracts. The club has thanked Still for his efforts, but it seems that patience has worn thin at St Mary's.

The news comes as Southampton defender Nathan Wood has apologized for verbally abusing fans after the game on Saturday. His outburst was a timely reminder of the importance of discipline and respect, both on and off the pitch.

As the club looks to rebuild under new leadership, there is no doubt that Still will face intense scrutiny over his time at the helm. Will he be able to turn things around in the future, or has this season's struggles been a permanent setback? Only time will tell.

🤦‍♂️ Can't say I'm surprised about Still getting the boot! 5 months is just crazy for a young manager to take on such pressure. 😬 The Saints' form was just awful and it's clear the board had lost faith in him ASAP. 🚫 Tonda Eckert will likely try to bring some stability, but it's gonna be tough to turn things around after this mess! 🤕 Nathan Wood's apology is a good start tho, we need more of that kind of maturity from players too 💪

Ugh man, this is like, such a shame 🤕 Southampton was having so much potential with Still at the helm but now it's just, what happened?! 🤔 The fans were literally begging for change and now they're stuck with... whoever replaces him next 🙄 I mean, Tonda Eckert's gotta do some serious damage control here. All those losses can't be just because of Still being a newbie 🤦‍♂️. Wood getting caught out on the pitch after what he said? That was like, the ultimate own goal 😳. Time will tell if Still can redeem himself but I'm not holding my breath 👀

Ugh, what a mess! 🤦‍♂️ I'm so done with Southampton's season. Five months and it's already over for Will Still? That's just devastating for the young manager who was trying to make a name for himself. The fact that they couldn't even find two league wins is just crazy. It's clear the board had lost faith in him, but I feel bad for the guy – he was only 33 and had all the potential in the world! 🤞

And poor Nathan Wood for losing his cool after the game... like, we get it, you're frustrated, but verbal abuse is never the answer 😔. The whole situation just feels like a big mess right now. I hope Tonda Eckert can step in and help turn things around, but given Still's struggles, I'm not holding out much hope for a turnaround 🤦‍♂️. It's gonna be a long season ahead...

awww man... poor still 🤕🏆 i feel so bad for him, getting sacked after just 5 months 🚫😔 he was young and trying to make it work, but it just didn't happen 🌪️💔 the fans were already restless, but i'm sure he gave it his all 💪👍 but sometimes things just don't go as planned 🤷‍♀️💭 nathan wood's outburst is a good reminder of how important sportsmanship and respect are - gotta be careful with those emotions 🔥😒 hope still bounces back from this, maybe in the future he'll get another chance to prove himself 👊🏼💕

🤔 Still's story is like life itself - it can go from high highs to low lows in an instant. You think you've got everything under control, but then BAM! Things spiral out of control and you're left wondering what went wrong. It's a harsh reminder that even the best-laid plans can go awry. We need to be careful not to put all our eggs in one basket (or in this case, one manager). The key is to learn from our mistakes and move forward with humility. If Still was able to take ownership of his mistakes and grow from them, then maybe he'll come out stronger on the other side. But for now, it's time to regroup and reassess. 📚

.. think back to when Spurs sacked Redknapp after just 5 months, and we all thought "oh, that was it, he's done". But you know what, he went on to do alright for himself in the end... Still's got some fight left in him, maybe he'll prove us wrong this time. But honestly, a bit of a shame, feels like Southampton's lost their momentum already 🤕
