I mean, come on... 30,000 tons of road salt? That's just ridiculous. Like, do they not have anything better to spend that money on? And now the environment is gonna pay for it... Mayflies and stoneflies are basically toast. Can we just use some actual science here instead of slapping salt everywhere like a bunch of amateurs? I'm all for keeping sidewalks safe, but can't we find a more eco-friendly way to do it?! And what's with the 'just a small cup of salt per two big sidewalk squares' thing? Like, are they trying to make us feel bad about our shoveling skills or something?
omg u gotta feel bad 4 philly rn their road salt usage is like woah 30k tons?! i get it they need it 2 keep ppl safe but all this salt cant b good 4 the enviro tho... think about it, its contaminatin water supplies & harmmin wildlife faith zerbe says its like throwing a big bag of snot into streams & creeks lol... and theres also trees n stuff dat suffer in spring cuz of all that salt but on a more serious note, i think people cld reduce waste n be more mindful of how much salt they use... shoveling n plowing can help reduce need 4 melting... n alternative compounds like ca magnesium acetate r less toxic
so 15k tons of road salt is like a whole lotta stuff but honestly, i'm kinda worried about it too... i mean, those little creatures Faith Zerbe was talking about are super important to our ecosystem, and if they get affected by the salt, what's gonna happen to us? also, have you seen those videos of animals drinking salty water and getting all sick? that's just gross. can't we find a way to reduce waste and use more eco-friendly stuff instead of relying on so much salt?
ugh, road salt is just so overhyped lol I mean, yeah it's necessary in like 10 degrees below zero weather but come on phila, you gotta deal with the aftermath too all this sodium in the water is a real bummer for the wildlife fam and i'm low-key sad about the tree damage when spring comes around but on the bright side, it's giving us an excuse to get our own little salt recycling game going sweep up that trash, store it in waterproof containers, and report those salt piles to the city let's do this for philly!
I'm really worried about the massive amount of road salt being used in Philly right now... I mean, yeah it's necessary to keep things safe during the cold weather but using 15k tons is just insane! The environmental consequences are gonna be huge - think contaminated drinking water, corroded infrastructure, and who knows what kind of harm it's gonna do to wildlife that rely on those streams and creeks. And let's not forget about the trees and shrubs when spring rolls around... It's like, we get it, we need to keep our roads clear but can't we find a way to reduce waste and use more eco-friendly alternatives? Like calcium magnesium acetate or sand - I know they're more expensive but come on, it's worth it for the planet! And honestly, sweeping up excess salt from sidewalks and streets after each storm is like, super easy... just put it in waterproof containers and report any large piles to the municipality. Easy peasy. Let's get our act together Philly!
