Older and younger renters: share your experiences

The Shift in Rental Demographics: An Age Divide

In a significant reversal, the notion of "Generation Rent" – once synonymous with young people struggling to afford their first homes – now encompasses individuals from all walks of life. A recent surge in rental data reveals that England and Wales have seen a substantial increase in households renting over the past two decades. The numbers are staggering: 5 million households rent privately, up from 1.9 million in 2001.

The rising tide of older renters is particularly noteworthy. Between 2010/11 and 2023, the number of households aged 55 or above has grown by a whopping 70%. This demographic shift suggests that retirement – once seen as a guarantee of homeownership – is no longer a certainty for many.

For those who have chosen to remain in rented accommodations beyond traditional retirement age, experiences vary widely. Some report feeling disillusioned with the prospect of owning a home, citing financial constraints or concerns about resale value. Others express frustration with the perceived lack of affordable options and rising costs of renting.

However, not all renters are older adults. A new generation of young renters is emerging, with 28-year-olds increasingly taking up rented accommodations. This phenomenon raises questions about the future of homeownership for this age group.

As the rental landscape continues to evolve, it's clear that demographics are playing a significant role in shaping these changes. Whether you're an older renter looking to secure your financial footing or a young adult navigating the ups and downs of renting, one thing is certain: the world of private rentals is no longer defined solely by age.

🤔 I'm totally stoked to see this shift in rental demographics! Growing up, I always thought owning a home was the ultimate goal, but now I'm not so sure. I've got some friends who are in their 50s and they're still renting because they can't afford to buy a place that fits their lifestyle. It's like, retirement isn't as solid of an option as we used to think.

And then there's this new generation of young renters – 28-year-olds! I know people my age who are still living with parents or friends because they can't scrape together a down payment. It's wild how the game has changed.

I do wish there were more affordable options out there, though. Renting can be super expensive and it feels like you're always playing catch-up with rent increases. But at the same time, I think this shift in demographics is forcing us to rethink what home means – and that's kinda cool? 🏠💡

I'm surprised people are renting at 55+ 🤯. Like, I get it, prices are crazy and whatnot, but some of my friends have been renting since they were 25 and now 40+ 🏠😒. I mean, I've got a buddy who's a mortgage broker and he's still renting himself because the market is just too weird right now 🤔.

I'm not sure what's more concerning - the fact that 70% more people aged 55+ are renting, or that this generation thinks renting is okay for them in retirement 🤔. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for flexibility, but isn't owning a home supposed to be the ultimate goal? It seems like we're losing touch with what's important here...

I think this whole shift in rental demographics is kinda crazy 🤯. I mean, who would've thought that older people would be the ones renting out instead of having to move into care homes? It's like, retirement isn't what it used to be, and that's a good thing for younger folks who are delaying homeownership. But at the same time, some 50+ year olds might feel like they're stuck in limbo, unsure if they'll ever have the chance to own their dream home. And then there's this new generation of young renters... I feel bad for them, 'cause I know how hard it is to find affordable rent that's not gonna get sold out from under you 🏠💸

Rental woes got you down? 🤦‍♂️ Don't worry, it's not just the youngins' problem! 😂 [GIF of an older adult trying to get into a rental application]

I'm like totally surprised that older people are now part of the "Generation Rent" thingy 🤯. I mean, I've seen some old friends who live in rented places and they're all like "good for them" because they don't want to deal with all the hassle of buying a house 💸. And yeah, it's crazy how many people are renting now – 5 million households is a big number! 📊

But I do think it's interesting that some older renters are feeling like owning a home isn't for them. Maybe they've got other priorities or just don't want to worry about property maintenance? 💡 As for the young folks, I feel bad for them because renting can be super expensive and unpredictable. 😩 Do you guys have any advice on how to navigate that world?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... like 5 million households renting in England and Wales, that's crazy! 🤯 I remember when I was young (lol, not that old yet) buying a house was like the ultimate goal. Now it seems like even older people are choosing to rent or can't afford to buy.

I think it's interesting that some people feel disillusioned with owning a home, but others are frustrated with the rental market. I've got a friend who's in his mid-30s and he just rented a place because he couldn't find an affordable option for buying. I'm not sure what the future holds, but it's clear that renting is becoming more mainstream.

I do wish there were more options for renters, especially younger people. It feels like you're stuck in this cycle of saving up for a deposit and dealing with high costs... anyway, that's just my two cents 🤷‍♂️

omg i totally get it now... people arent just young adults struggling to afford a house anymore, its like the whole demographic is being affected 🤯🏠 and i feel for the older folks who thought theyd be set after retirement but now have to deal with the rental game too 😩. i mean, i've had friends in their 50s who are still renting because they can't afford to buy a house or don't want to sell their place 🤔. its like the whole notion of homeownership is changing and its kinda scary 😬 but at least now there's more options out there for renters, whether you're young or old 💸.

omg i'm literally thinking of selling my condo in london and moving back to my hometown in the states because renting is so expensive rn 🤯, like i'm 32 but it feels like i'm living off mom's savings for eternity lol 😂, and now im seeing this news about older people being all like "why bother with homeownership?" and idk if thats a good or bad thing? maybe its just me but i kinda miss the security of having a home 🏠💤

I FEEL LIKE RENTING IS GETTING MORE AND MORE COMMON THESE DAYS!!! I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T LOVE THE FREEDOM OF NOT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS?! BUT SERIOUSLY, IT'S INTERESTING TO SEE HOW PEOPLE ARE CHOOSING TO RENT LATER IN LIFE. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE WHO HAVE RENTED FOR YEARS AND JUST CAN'T AFFORD A HOME, OR PREFER THE FREEDOM TO TRAVEL WITHOUT THE WEIGHT OF OWNERSHIP. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IT'S ALSO GREAT TO SEE YOUNGER PEOPLE CHOOSING TO RENT TOO - IT'S LIKE THEY'RE NOT WAITING AROUND FOR SOME KIND OF "RIGHT" TO OWN A HOME. ANYWAY, I JUST THINK IT'S COOL THAT RENTING IS BECOMING MORE MAINSTREAM! 🤩

omg i feel like im not alone anymore 🤯 its crazy how much it has changed since i was in uni, everyone back then assumed theyd be buying their own place by 25 lol now its a whole different story. i mean my aunt is 62 and still renting because she can't afford to buy in her area, so idk what the future holds for her 🤔 but im glad theres more options out there for people

I'M SO GLAD THAT THE IDEA OF RENTING IS GETTING A NEW REFINEMENT!!! IT'S LIKE, WE'RE ALL ADULTS NOW AND OUR CIRCUMSTANCES CAN CHANGE IN A FLASH! I MEAN, WHO NEEDS TO OWN A HOME ANYWAY? IT'S LIKE, FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW! 🤑 MY FRIEND AND HER HUSBAND HAVE BEEN RENTING FOR YEARS AND THEY LOVE IT!!! THEY GET TO CHOOSE WHERE THEY WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT ALL THE STRESS OF BUYING.

I think its interesting that older people are becoming more common renters 🤔. I mean, I've got friends who are my parents' age and they're still renting because their kids have moved out or they just can't afford a mortgage right now 🏠. It makes sense though, especially with the cost of living being so high nowadays 💸. But at the same time, its sad that some people feel like owning a home is too expensive to even consider 🤕. Maybe there's a way to make renting more affordable and appealing to everyone? 🤷‍♀️

I gotta say, I'm seeing a lot of older folks out there renting these days 🤯 and it's making me think - what's the deal with that? Like, retirement wasn't always about owning a house, but now it seems like not everyone is getting that golden ticket to homeownership. For some people, it's about financial freedom, while others are just trying to keep up with the rent prices 🤦‍♀️. And then there's this new wave of young renters who are totally defying expectations - 28-year-olds renting? That's like, what's next? 😂 I'm all for people making their own choices about where they live, but it's crazy how much the rental market is changing 🌪️.

I feel like I'm finally hearing my own voice on this whole housing situation 🤗💬 I've been renting for years and it's crazy to see that the demographic shift is more than just young people anymore... it's all ages now! 😮 I think it's awesome that older folks are breaking free from the idea of retiring into a home, but at the same time, I'm a bit skeptical about affordability – how can anyone expect to save for a down payment when prices are sky-high? 🤔💸 What do you guys think is gonna happen next in this rental game?

I'm not sure I buy into this "Gen Rent" label anymore 🤔. It feels like just another marketing gimmick to me. All these young folks renting out, but are they really struggling to afford a home? Or is it just that prices have gotten too high and they're giving up on the dream of homeownership altogether? And what about all these older folks who can't afford to buy due to financial constraints... aren't we missing something here? Is this just a sign that we need more affordable options, or are people just getting older and wiser (or poorer)? 🤷‍♂️

I'm loving this shift in rental demographics 🤩. I've got friends who are in their 40s and still renting, and it's amazing to see how the idea of homeownership has changed for them. They're prioritizing financial stability and freedom over saving up for a mortgage 🏠💸. And on the other hand, some young folks are opting to rent because they can't afford to buy 😳. It's all about adapting to the changing times and making informed decisions about your lifestyle and finances 💡. What's cool is that it's not just about age – it's about what works for you individually 🤝.

I remember my aunt's husband, he was like 60 when I was growing up and he still lived in this tiny flat in London, it was crazy! He told me that back in the day, everyone thought they would retire by 65 and buy a nice house, but now it's just not happening for some people. It's funny, my aunt always said she would never rent, but now she's like "oh well, I'm stuck with this mortgage". I feel bad for her 😒.

I've got a friend who's in her mid-30s and still can't find an affordable place to live, she's been renting the same tiny studio for years. It's not just age, it's also about affordability and availability of housing. Sometimes I wonder how people do it... 🤯
