A former Spanish football federation president, Luis Rubiales, narrowly escaped physical harm when eggs were thrown at him during a book launch event in Madrid on Thursday. According to Rubiales himself, the assailant was his own uncle - an astonishing claim he later clarified as "a deranged person".
Rubiales was attending a book presentation for his new publication 'Matar a Rubiales' (Killing Rubiales) when his alleged relative attempted to attack him with eggs. The incident occurred in plain sight of other attendees, who were unable to restrain the agitated individual before he could reach Rubiales.
The 48-year-old president had previously faced criticism following an infamous forced kiss on women's football player Jenni Hermoso after Spain won the Women's World Cup in August last year. He was fined β¬10,800 for his actions and has since stated that he would appeal against his conviction at the Supreme Court. However, Rubiales now finds himself on the receiving end of physical aggression.
National police have confirmed that an individual with a family connection to Rubiales is currently being held over the assault, but declined to elaborate further due to ongoing investigations.
Rubiales maintains that the events surrounding his kiss with Hermoso were consensual, however many still view the incident as a gross example of sexism in sport.
