Bankruptcy Filing by Louisiana Diocese Amid Clergy Abuse Claims
A Catholic diocese in central Louisiana has filed for chapter 11 protection, becoming the latest institution in the US to do so amid a global crisis sparked by clergy abuse claims. The diocese of Alexandria, led by Bishop Robert W Marshall, is now among more than 40 Catholic institutions nationwide that have sought bankruptcy protection.
According to Penn State Law School data, 28 of these bankruptcies are linked to the clergy abuse scandal's fallout. Bishop Marshall stated in a statement that his diocese filed for financial reorganization due to an overwhelming number of clergy sexual abuse claims against it.
The bishop described some past priests as "past perpetrators" who abused minors, actions deemed evil and sinful by the church. He emphasized the need to compensate those harmed while also continuing essential diocesan ministries.
This move comes after a similar bankruptcy filing by the archdiocese of New Orleans in Louisiana last year. The New Orleans archdiocese is set to release $230 million to victims of child abuse by clergy, with over 99% of voters supporting the settlement.
