Justice Department again fails to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James

The Justice Department has struck out for the third time in its attempts to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James. A federal grand jury refused to indict James, dealing a significant blow to President Donald Trump's pressure campaign against her.

Since January, Trump has repeatedly pushed for James' prosecution on charges related to a mortgage on her home in Norfolk, Virginia. The Justice Department first brought the case before a grand jury but ultimately failed to secure an indictment. The second attempt also ended in defeat, with a federal judge dismissing the charges due to concerns over the appointment of the prosecutor.

This latest setback has been described by James' lawyer as "a stain on this Department's reputation" and has raised "troubling questions about its integrity." The Justice Department did not comment on the decision.

It is worth noting that it is rare for a federal grand jury to reject charges, largely due to the process being stacked in favor of the government. Prosecutors only need to convince 12 of at least 16 grand jurors to meet the probable cause threshold, which is significantly lower than the unanimous "beyond a reasonable doubt" requirement for securing a conviction.

The case against James revolves around allegations that she saved $50 per month on her mortgage payment by declaring her home as her second residence. However, James has pleaded not guilty to these charges and maintains that she followed all applicable laws and regulations.

Trump's efforts to see James prosecuted have been seen as an attempt to exact revenge against the Attorney General for investigating his organization for fraud. A divided state appeals court found Trump liable for fraud in a civil suit but also ruled that the $464 million judgment was excessive.

The Justice Department's repeated failures to secure an indictment against James are likely to further erode trust in the agency and raise questions about its independence from political interference.

can't believe this is happening 🀯 another example of how our system is rigged against the people... it's like they're trying to make sure politicians who do the right thing get punished for doing so. $50 per month on her mortgage payment, come on! that's not even a drop in the bucket πŸ€‘ and now the Justice Department is getting a reputation for being nothing more than a political tool 😑 anyone think about all the other times they've been used to silence or intimidate whistleblowers and activists? πŸ€” we need real accountability here, not just empty threats from Trump...

I'm not buying all this drama around Letitia James πŸ˜’. I mean, come on, a $50 per month mortgage savings? It's not like she's hiding millions or something πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And what's with Trump trying to exact revenge because she looked into his shady business dealings? That's just shady politics for you πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ.

And can we talk about how the Justice Department is failing its job here? A grand jury rejecting charges that easily? It's like they're more worried about appeasing politicians than doing their actual job πŸ’Ό. And what's with all these 'troubling questions' about integrity? Just give us some real evidence instead of hand-wringing πŸ€”.

I'm not saying she's innocent or anything, but I think we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture here. Is this really about justice, or is it just about Trump trying to score points with his base? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Let's focus on holding people accountable for real crimes, rather than just playing politics πŸ”.

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Can't believe this is still happening! Like, come on, President Trump, chill out! πŸ™„ You can't just keep pushing for someone's prosecution 'cause you're mad at them. It's not cool, dude. The whole thing reeks of politicization and it's affecting the integrity of the Justice Department. πŸ€• They're trying to do their job but it's like they're under a microscope. And what's with this $50 monthly savings on her mortgage? Like, who cares about that? πŸ€‘ It's just another example of how out of touch you are with reality, Mr. Trump. πŸ˜’

omg did u guys see this? another failed attempt by trump to take down james πŸ™„πŸ˜’ it's getting old. i mean, can't he just leave her alone? he's pushing for a 3rd time already? what's next? trying to indict joe biden too? πŸ˜‚πŸ€£ anyway, the fact that this is even happening in the first place is wild. the justice department is supposed to be above politics, but it feels like they're just as caught up in trump's drama as everyone else πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. i'm all for holding james accountable if she did do something wrong, but this is getting out of hand πŸ™ƒ. and can we talk about how ridiculous the mortgage situation is? like, $50 a month on her mortgage payment? that's not even worth writing an indictment over πŸ˜‚

omg, what's up with this case?! 🀯 it's like, really hard to believe that Trump is still trying to take down Letitia James after all these months. I mean, come on, a grand jury just said no way to the indictment... how much more evidence does he need?! πŸ˜’ and yeah, it's super shady that he's doing this whole revenge thing against her for investigating his org for fraud.

I'm kinda worried about the Justice Department too tho. If they can't even get an indictment right, what else are they gonna mess up on? πŸ€” I don't wanna think about it, but it's like, really important to have a fair and independent agency. And this whole thing is just making me more curious - what's going on behind the scenes?! πŸ’‘

I don’t usually comment but... it’s kinda weird how some people just won't give up, you know? Trump's been going after Letitia James for months now, and every time he thinks he's got her cornered, she slips away again . Like, I get it, he might be salty about that civil suit, but indicting her over a mortgage thing is just plain petty πŸ€‘. And what really gets me is how some folks are saying the Justice Department's reputation is tarnished because of this... like, they're already doing their job to the best of their abilities and then you throw some grand jury drama at them? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It just feels like Trump's trying to stir up trouble for no reason. Anyway, I don’t know about you guys but it seems like James' not-guilty plea is starting to look more and more plausible πŸ˜…

This is getting crazy! 🀯 Trump's trying to get Letitia James indicted for declaring her home as a second residence? Like, what even is that? πŸ˜‚ It sounds like a total stretch to me. And now the Justice Department just got blocked again... it's like they're not even trying to defend this case anymore. πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

It's so fishy when Trump keeps pushing for James' prosecution because she was investigating his org for fraud. You'd think he'd be all about justice and fairness, but nope! He just wants revenge. πŸ˜’ And now the whole thing is just a big mess.

I'm not surprised that the grand jury refused to indict James - I mean, it's pretty obvious they were gonna say no. But still, it's sad when politics like this take over an important case like this one. πŸ€” The Justice Department needs to do better than this and show some independence from Trump's pressure campaign. πŸ‘Ž

Ugh, this is a nightmare 🀯! The Justice Department can't even get it right on a case that seems super simple πŸ˜’. I mean, come on, $50 per month on a mortgage? That's not exactly a crime mastermind stuff πŸ€‘. And Trump's pushing for her prosecution just because she investigated him for fraud... it's like he's trying to set a bad example for the rest of us πŸ€₯. This whole thing is just a mess, and now it's clear that the Justice Department can't be trusted to do its job without some political interference πŸ‘€. The fact that they got rejected by a grand jury three times should be a major red flag πŸ””. We need better than this πŸ’”.

πŸ€” "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." - Lord Acton 😬 This latest decision is a harsh reminder that the Justice Department's independence is crucial in maintaining faith in the system. The fact that they've failed three times to secure an indictment against James raises serious concerns about their integrity. It's like the old saying goes: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." 🏠
