Former MP from Katter's Australian party claims victory in Townsville mayoral race after swing against former leader

Townsville has delivered a resounding rejection of its former mayor, Troy Thompson, handing a surprise victory to Nick Dametto, a 42-year-old bodybuilder and bull-riding politician from the populist right. As of Sunday morning, Dametto had garnered over 61% of the vote in Saturday's byelection, with Ann-Maree Greaney, the acting mayor, conceding defeat on social media.

The swing against Thompson is being described as one of the biggest in Australian electoral history. In September, Thompson resigned as mayor after allegations of misleading voters about his army service, which led to a suspension on full pay while the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission investigated. Despite this controversy, Thompson had won the 2024 mayoralty with 46.4% of the primary vote.

In contrast, Dametto's popularity is attributed to his youth, visibility in northern Queensland, and a strong anti-immigration message. As deputy leader of Katter's Australian Party, he was involved in recent anti-immigration marches in Townsville and campaigned for the appointment of a minister for men.

Dametto's victory has been welcomed by the government, with Premier David Crisafulli praising him as "strongly backed" by Townsville residents. The politician has also faced criticism for his campaign promises, including an aggressive new flying fox dispersal regime and pushing for "castle law", which would allow homeowners to use deadly force against intruders on their property.

Analysts attribute Dametto's surprise victory to his ability to avoid controversy and his strong connection with the local community. Paul Williams, a political analyst, described Thompson's poor showing as a result of the "colourful soap opera" surrounding his campaign. Meanwhile, Dametto's party affiliation has drawn comparisons to other populist right-wing politicians in Australia.

The byelection has sparked interest as a key test for the Crisafulli government, with a by-election for Hinchinbrook scheduled for November 29. As Dametto celebrates his surprise victory, it remains to be seen how he will govern the city and whether his views on immigration and other issues will resonate with residents.

just watched that news about townsville byelection ๐Ÿคฏ what's up with damettos campaign promises tho? like, flying fox dispersal regime is crazy ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿšซ and who thought "castle law" was a good idea ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ˜ฌ i feel like he's gonna be all about conflict rather than resolving issues ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I'm kinda surprised by this result in Townsville ๐Ÿ˜. I mean, I know Troy Thompson's whole army service thing was a mess, but you'd think that would've hurt him more than 61% of the vote? ๐Ÿค” But Nick Dametto, he just kind of swooped in and won over the community with his anti-immigration message and being young and relatable. It's like he tapped into this vibe of "us vs them" and people really latched onto that ๐Ÿ’ช. I'm worried about what his policies on immigration and other stuff might do to the city, though... it feels like a pretty divisive win ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Can't wait to see how he governs and if the locals actually get what they voted for ๐Ÿ‘€.

I'm low-key impressed by Nick Dametto's win ๐Ÿค”, I know some ppl might think his views on immigration are pretty extreme ๐Ÿšซ, but like, what if they're actually resonating with people who feel left behind by the system? It's time to have a real conversation about borders and how we're managing them. And btw, the whole "castle law" thing is kinda crazy ๐Ÿ”ช, but at least he's willing to stir the pot and get people talking. The gov's support for him is also interesting - it shows they're trying to tap into the discontent in northern QLD ๐Ÿ˜. Anyway, I'm curious to see how Dametto governs now that he's mayor ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ Dametto's win is like whoa... that swing of 15.6% is crazy! I mean, not surprised that people didn't vote for Thompson after those allegations came out. But 61%? That's a lot. Interesting how the gov is already backing him though. His campaign promises are wild tho... deadly force against intruders? What's next? ๐Ÿคช

๐Ÿคฏ omg did u see this?! so Troy Thompson got royally thrashed by Nick Dametto in the byelection ! i mean 61% is crazy ! Dametto's campaign was all about being a strong leader and talking about men's rights and anti-immigration , it seems to have really resonated with the ppl in Townsville . i'm actually kinda intrigued by his views on immigration , not sure if i agree or disagree but its definitely food for thought ๐Ÿค”. also can't help but wonder how he'll govern the city without any major controversy ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. this byelection is def a key test for the Crisafulli government and i'm excited to see what happens next ๐Ÿ‘€

awww man... i feel bad for thompson... he must've been so nervous about getting caught out over that army service thingy ๐Ÿค•... but dametto's win is defo a wake-up call for the gov, like, how are they gonna work w/ someone who's got such strong views on immigration & stuff? ๐Ÿค” plus, his campaign promises sound super sketchy, like flying fox dispersal regime? what even is that?! ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿ’€ anyway, gotta give credit to dametto for being able to connect w/ the community, but it's gonna be interesting to see how he does as mayor... fingers crossed he doesn't make any more waves ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

idk what's going on in Townsville ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ... one sec I was chillin' with my mates, and then i see this news about Nick Dametto winning the byelection by a landslide ๐Ÿš€... it's crazy how he got 61% of the vote despite everything that went down with Troy Thompson ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, i get it, people are fed up with politics as usual, but come on, some of his promises sound sketchy ๐Ÿค”... like an aggressive flying fox dispersal regime? what even is that? ๐Ÿ˜‚. and the whole "castle law" thing? that's just plain creepy ๐Ÿšซ. anywayz, i guess we'll have to wait and see how he does as mayor ๐Ÿ’ช... will he be able to connect with the community and make good decisions, or will he just stir up more drama ๐Ÿ”ฅ? only time will tell ๐Ÿ‘€.

๐Ÿค” just think about this, guys - a politician who's all about stirring up trouble and being provocative can actually win over people by avoiding controversy? it's like, if you're gonna be loud and flashy, but not necessarily for the right reasons, do you really expect people to listen? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ or is it just that sometimes we want someone to shake things up, even if it means getting a little messy? Dametto might have won this battle, but will he be able to lead Townsville to victory in the long run? only time will tell... ๐Ÿ’ช

Wow, who wouldn't want a bodybuilder as their mayor? ๐Ÿคฃ I mean, it's not like that's exactly what Townsville needed after all those years of 'colourful soap operas'... *cough* Troy Thompson *cough*. But hey, at least Dametto can still compete with his abs on the campaign trail ๐Ÿ˜‚. And yeah, an aggressive flying fox dispersal regime? That's gonna be a real win for the community... not ๐Ÿ™„. On the bright side, if he becomes mayor, maybe we'll see more 'castle law' - because who doesn't love a good game of 'don't shoot the mailman'? ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿ˜’ I'm skeptical about this whole thing... Like, how could Thompson just resign after getting suspended from full pay? That's some dodgy politics if you ask me ๐Ÿค”. And what's up with Dametto's party affiliation? Katter's Australian Party is like the Aussie version of Trump's Republican Party... all right-wing and anti-immigration ๐Ÿ’€. Can someone please get me some sources on how this whole thing went down? I need to know more about Thompson's "colourful soap opera" before I start believing Dametto's victory was genuine ๐Ÿ“Š.

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised by this outcome tbh, people in Townsville are known for being straight shooters and not afraid of a good debate. But I do think Dametto's anti-immigration stance is gonna be a major issue for him - it's 2025 and Australia's more diverse than ever ๐ŸŒŽ. Not to mention those flying fox dispersal plans sound like a recipe for disaster ๐Ÿฆ‡. And what's with the "castle law" business? Is he serious about arming homeowners or just trying to stir up controversy ๐Ÿ’ช. I'm intrigued to see how Dametto'll govern Townsville and whether his views'll translate to actual policy changes ๐Ÿคž. One thing's for sure, this byelection is a major bellwether for the upcoming election ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, Troy Thompson was supposed to be the mayor of Townsville for a bit, but it looks like that didn't exactly work out for him ๐Ÿ˜‚. Now Nick Dametto is in charge and he's got some pretty strong views on immigration and stuff. I'm not sure what to think about this guy, but I guess his youth and being visible in the community helped him get elected ๐Ÿค”.

I've been hearing a lot of mixed opinions about his campaign promises, though - like that flying fox dispersal regime? ๐Ÿœ That seems kinda extreme to me ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. And what's up with this "castle law" thing? I don't think I'd want someone wielding deadly force in my backyard ๐Ÿ˜จ.

But hey, it looks like the government is stoked about Dametto getting elected, so that's a plus โš–๏ธ. Now we just have to wait and see how he'll govern Townsville and whether his views will be popular with residents ๐Ÿ‘€.

so this is like totally crazy right? 61% of the vote goes to a bodybuilder who's been riding the populist wave? i mean, can't say i'm surprised, but still. thompson was already in trouble after those army service allegations. but dametto's youth and visibility seem to have paid off for him. interesting that the gov's backing him, though... not sure if that's a good thing or not ๐Ÿค”. gotta wonder how he'll navigate the issues like flying fox dispersal and castle law. seems kinda extreme. anyway, can't wait to see how this plays out ๐Ÿ‘€

omg what's going on in townsville?! ๐Ÿคฏ so like thompson was already in trouble after that army service scandal and now dametto just swooped in and stole the show ๐Ÿ˜ฒ i'm not surprised though he did seem pretty popular at those anti-immigration marches and his party affiliation is definitely divisive but at the same time ppl were feeling like they needed a change ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ i'm curious to see how he'll govern tho - will he be able to balance his party's views with what's best for the city? ๐Ÿ’ช

dunno what's more shocking, tho - Troy Thompson getting knocked off or the fact that Nick Dametto's got 61% of the vote ๐Ÿคฏ! seems like a pretty big swing considering he was only in office for 6 months. anyway, stats show that this byelection is one of the biggest in Aust electoral history ๐Ÿ“Š. 61% of people want change after all those scandals surrounding Thompson ๐Ÿšฎ. Dametto's young and visible, which might've helped him connect with locals ๐Ÿ’ผ. but on the flip side, his party's got some pretty radical ideas ๐Ÿคช - like "castle law" ๐Ÿ’€. wonder how that'll play out in reality ๐Ÿ”. btw, did you know that Aussie voters are getting more conservative? ๐Ÿ“ˆ. in 2020, 64% of Austs voted for a conservative gov ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ. now it's at 66% ๐Ÿšซ. what's going on here? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿคฏ so what's up is that a bodybuilder turned politician won the mayoral election in Townsville by like 61% ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ it's crazy to think he was once considered unsuitable for the job due to some shady army service allegations ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ but then again, his anti-immigration message and being young and visible in northern Queensland seemed to work out pretty well for him ๐Ÿ’ช

anyway, i'm kinda curious about how he's gonna run the city now that he's in charge ๐Ÿค” will he be able to balance his populist views with doing what's good for the community? only time will tell ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

๐Ÿ™„ I'm so surprised Nick Dametto won with such a landslide ๐Ÿ˜‚! I mean, who wouldn't want to vote for a 42-year-old bodybuilder who's also into bull-riding? ๐Ÿคธโ€โ™‚๏ธ His anti-immigration message really spoke to the community ๐Ÿ’–. And let's be real, his campaign promises about "castle law" and flying fox dispersal regime are totally reasonable ๐Ÿ˜ด. I'm so glad the government is supporting him - it just goes to show they're really on the pulse of what Townsville residents want ๐Ÿ™Œ. But seriously, how can anyone trust a politician who's basically a reality TV star? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Just saw that Nick Dametto won the Townsville byelection in a landslide ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. I'm not surprised really, his anti-immigration message resonates with some people, especially in northern QLD. What's concerning me though is how aggressive some of his campaign promises are ๐Ÿคฏ like an aggressive flying fox dispersal regime? Castle law sounds super divisive ๐Ÿšซ and I'm worried about the potential impact on our communities. The government's backing him doesn't make me feel any better ๐Ÿ˜’. I just hope Dametto can govern with a level head and not let his personal views dictate policy decisions ๐Ÿ’ก. It's going to be interesting to see how he navigates the next few months ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ
