Catherine O'Hara's cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, with cancer as underlying cause, AP reports

Catherine O'Hara's death has been revealed to be caused by a pulmonary embolism, with cancer as the underlying cause. The Los Angeles County death certificate issued last week confirms that 71-year-old actress passed away on January 30th.

According to reports, O'Hara had been battling rectal cancer for over a year before her passing. The pulmonary embolism is believed to have occurred due to blood clots in the lungs.

In a statement released earlier, O'Hara's representatives only stated that she died following a brief illness, leaving many fans and colleagues stunned by the news of her sudden demise.

The beloved actress, known for her iconic roles as Macaulay Culkin's mother in "Home Alone" movies and Moira Rose in "Schitt's Creek", had also appeared in numerous TV shows such as "Six Feet Under" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm". Her long-lasting career spanned over five decades.

In the wake of her death, many collaborators and costars took to social media to pay tribute to O'Hara. Michael Keaton shared a heartfelt message, describing her as his 'pretend wife', while Seth Rogen expressed his gratitude for having worked with her on "The Studio".

Culkin posted side-by-side images from "Home Alone" and their time together at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, saying "I thought we had time... I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you."

O'Hara's legacy will undoubtedly live on through her impressive body of work, including seven movies with longtime friend Eugene Levy, for which she won an Emmy Award.

man this is crazy how quickly we lose our heroes 🀯 can't believe Macaulay Culkin just posted those pics with Catherine O'Hara it's like she was taken away from us in a second 😱 and I'm still trying to process that she had rectal cancer for over a year without publicly saying anything about it - felt like she was fighting this alone πŸ’” anyway her legacy lives on through all the amazing shows and movies she made, still can't get over "Schitt's Creek" though 🀣

Just saw the news about Catherine O'Hara... so sad. I keep thinking about all those iconic roles she played - who can forget Mrs. McCallister in Home Alone? It's crazy to think she was battling cancer and then a pulmonary embolism took her away from us too soon. Her career spanned so many decades, it's wild to think of all the other projects she must have been on while we were still watching Schitt's Creek 😒 Michael Keaton shared this beautiful message about their pretend marriage... makes me smile a bit. I'm definitely gonna watch some of her old movies now πŸ’.
