Bondi assigns prosecutor to lead investigation into Trump adversaries over Epstein ties – live updates

US Attorney General Pam Bondi has assigned Jay Clayton, the US attorney for the southern district of New York, to lead an investigation into Donald Trump's political adversaries and their ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Clayton, who previously served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump's first administration, is described by Bondi as "one of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the country".

Earlier this week, Trump directed the justice department to launch a probe into former president Bill Clinton, Democratic donor and entrepreneur Reid Hoffman, and former treasury secretary Larry Summers. The investigation has renewed focus on Trump's relationship with Epstein, who was charged with sex trafficking minors.

Trump called the latest release of emails renewing focus on his relationship with Epstein a "hoax", and directed the justice department to launch a probe into Clinton, Hoffman, and Summers. Bondi described Clayton as capable and trusted, stating that the Department will pursue this matter with urgency and integrity to deliver answers to the American people.

The investigation comes amid reports of Trump's efforts to distance himself from Epstein, including his repeated claims that the ongoing investigation is a "hoax" and "Russia scam". Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House oversight committee, has responded to these claims, saying that the Oversight investigation has Donald Trump panicked and desperate.

Meanwhile, in other news, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a rare condemnation of President Trump's immigration crackdown, advocating for meaningful immigration reform. White House border czar Tom Homan hit back, calling the bishops wrong and suggesting they need to "fix the Catholic church".

In related developments, US Customs and Border Protection personnel are expected to arrive in Charlotte as early as this Saturday, according to Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden. The sheriff confirmed that his office has been contacted by federal officials about the upcoming operation, but has not been requested to assist with or participate in any enforcement actions.

In other news, a program director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was put on non-disciplinary administrative leave for speaking out against the direction of the agency. Jenna Norton posted a video on TikTok saying she was silenced and that being put on leave was "designed to scare" her colleagues.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole Epstein thing... it's like, come on Trump 🙄... why you gotta make it so hard for yourself? First you try to distance yourself from him, then you start accusing others of being involved with him? I mean, what's the story here? 🤔

And now this new investigation led by Jay Clayton? I hope they get to the bottom of it. Trump's been playing dumb for years and it's time someone calls him out on it 😒... I'm also a bit worried about the whole Clinton-Hoffman-Summers probe, I mean who knows what kinda dirt that'll uncover? 🤯

And have you seen this news about the NIH director getting put on leave for speaking out? That's like, super concerning. Who do we trust anymore? 🤔💔

I'm really worried about this whole Epstein investigation. It's just going to be another distraction from real issues... like how our immigration system is still super broken 🤕. And let's not forget, Trump has a history of lying about stuff – it's hard to trust him on this one. I think the Democrats are right to call out his claims and keep pushing for accountability. And can we talk about how the Catholic bishops just got roasted by White House border czar Tom Homan? Like, who does he think he is? 🙄

🤔 so Trump's trying to shift the focus back to Epstein now... like, he's all "it's a hoax" again 🙄 meanwhile Clayton is leading this whole thing and I'm low-key rooting for him 💪 it's crazy how these investigations are all connected, btw. And can we talk about Bill Clinton for a sec? I don't know what's going on with him but Trump seems to think he's the one who needs investigating 🤷‍♀️ Reid Hoffman and Larry Summers are just collateral damage, tbh 💸

I'm low-key shocked about this new development with Jay Clayton taking over the Epstein investigation 🤯. It's like, finally some action after years of Trump dodging questions about his ties to Epstein. But at the same time, I'm still waiting for concrete answers... it feels like we're just getting more tea and not a lot of actual closure.

What do you guys think? Do you trust Clayton to get to the bottom of this? And what's with all these investigations targeting Trump's enemies? Feels like he's trying to distract us from his own issues 🙄. Anyway, I'm curious to see how this plays out - I hope we finally get some real accountability for Epstein's victims and their families 💔

man i dont get why trump is trying to deflect attention from his own issues 🤯 he's always gonna find ways to shift the focus away from himself lol anyway back to this epstein thing... i think its a pretty big deal that bondi has assigned clayton to lead the investigation 👮‍♂️ hopefully she can get to the bottom of it and give us some real answers. its like, trump's trying to make a case for himself but really he's just trying to avoid accountability 😒
