At least 7 dead, 11 injured in UPS plane crash and explosion at Kentucky airport

A devastating plane crash and explosion at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport has left at least seven people dead and eleven injured, authorities confirmed Tuesday evening. The UPS cargo plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 made in 1991, crashed while taking off from the global aviation hub in the Kentucky city at around 5:15 p.m.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with flames engulfing the plane's left wing and sending a trail of smoke into the air. Video footage showed the aircraft lifting slightly before crashing and exploding in a massive fireball, causing widespread destruction and debris scattered along the runway.

"It's like a war zone," said Tom Brooks Jr., owner of a nearby metal recycling business that was directly hit by the blast. "This was massive."

The airport was shut down immediately after the crash and is expected to remain closed until Wednesday morning due to safety concerns.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the scene as "violent" and warned that the death toll could rise. He also expressed his concern for the three crew members on board, whose status remains unknown.

"It's like a bomb because of the amount of fuel," said aviation attorney Pablo Rojas, analyzing the footage from the crash site.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the cause of the disaster. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg stated that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of airport personnel and passengers.

As news of the tragedy spread, friends and family members gathered outside a police training academy in search of information about missing loved ones. "We don't even want to think about anything but the best," said Bobby Whelan, friend of a woman who was reportedly in line when the explosion occurred.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many residents expressing their concern and support for those affected. UPS has announced that it will halt package sorting at its facility in Louisville until further notice.

In all, 11 people were injured, some with "very significant" injuries, while four of those killed were not even on board the plane. The full extent of the damage is still unfolding, but one thing is certain: this tragedy has left a profound impact on the city of Louisville and its residents.

omg what just happened at louisville airport?? 7 people dead 11 injured and it's like a war zone ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ฅ i'm so shocked and my heart goes out to everyone who was affected by this tragedy ๐Ÿ˜” why did this have to happen? was it an accident or something else entirely? ๐Ÿค” the footage is so disturbing, i don't know how anyone could be in that situation without being traumatized ๐Ÿ˜จ is it true that four of those killed weren't even on the plane? what were they doing there? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ anyway, my thoughts are with everyone who lost loved ones and is struggling to cope with this devastating news ๐Ÿ’•

.. ๐Ÿ˜• this is just awful. can you imagine being in line for your flight and then BAM! ๐Ÿ’ฅ your whole day turns into chaos. my heart goes out to all those who were affected by this plane crash, it's like a nightmare come true ๐Ÿคฏ. the fact that 4 people died on the ground, not even on the plane... it's just so senseless ๐Ÿ˜”. and now they're investigating what caused the explosion, hoping it was just a mechanical issue and not something more sinister ๐Ÿšจ. my only hope is that everyone involved in this tragedy gets the help they need and that the community of Louisville comes together to support each other during this tough time โค๏ธ.

I donโ€™t usually comment but I just can't help thinking about how crazy it is that there's already a cargo plane crash at an airport in 2025? Like, what were they doing out there? And now there are people dying and getting hurt... it's all so senseless ๐Ÿค•. The fact that the plane was carrying fuel makes total sense though - you can see how explosive that would be if something went wrong. I hope the investigation gets to the bottom of this soon, but it already feels like the aftermath is going to be a long and difficult road for everyone involved ๐Ÿ’”.

omg what just happened at that airport ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i was watching videos online 2 hours ago and it looks like total chaos they were saying 11 people hurt 4 of them weren't even on the plane whoa did you see those flames engulfing the thing it's insane that no one else got hurt tho ๐Ÿ™ maybe it was bad luck or whatever but still crazy news

๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฅ This is so sad ๐Ÿค•... just think about all those innocent ppl who lost their lives ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ˜ข... I'm sending all my thoughts & prayers to the families of the victims โค๏ธ... It's a really tough time for the community right now ๐Ÿ˜”, but I hope they can find comfort in each other's company ๐Ÿค—... The investigation will help us figure out what happened, but it's just not fair that this had to happen ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ... UPS is taking good care of things, at least ๐Ÿ‘... Can't wait for the airport to reopen & the city to heal a bit ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ugh, my god ๐Ÿคฏ just heard about that crazy plane crash at Louisville airport ๐Ÿ˜ฑ! Seven people are dead, eleven injured... what a mess! ๐Ÿšจ I'm so sorry for the victims and their families ๐Ÿค•. The footage is insane - flames everywhere, smoke filling the air ๐Ÿ’ฅ. I'm not surprised UPS stopped package sorting at their facility here in Louisville, safety first 24/7! ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ฏ

I feel bad for Tom Brooks Jr., his metal recycling business got hit by the blast ๐Ÿ˜”. And those three crew members on board... where are they? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ The NTSB is investigating now, hope they can figure out what went down ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

My heart goes out to all the families waiting for news outside that police training academy ๐Ÿ™. Keeping my fingers crossed everyone gets the answers and support they need ๐Ÿ’•.

What's going on in Louisville? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ This is just crazy... a whole plane explosion just like that?! ๐Ÿคฏ I feel so bad for everyone involved - 7 people dead, 11 injured... it's too much. The footage shows how massive the fire was, I can only imagine the fear and panic of those around. How does this even happen? Safety concerns at the airport are now a huge issue... hope everything gets sorted out ASAP ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿ˜ฑ just saw this news and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it... a plane crash that bad? I mean, I've seen some crazy things in videos, but this looks like a real-life disaster movie ๐Ÿคฏ the fact that 4 people were killed on the ground not even on the plane is just devastating ๐Ÿ˜” I feel so sorry for all the families affected and the first responders who have to deal with this chaos ๐Ÿ’” I hope the investigation can get to the bottom of what happened and make sure it never happens again ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ my thoughts are with Louisville and everyone in the community ๐Ÿ™

This is just so sad ๐Ÿค• I mean, seven people dead is already too much, and eleven injured? That's crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I'm not surprised that UPS halted package sorting at their facility in Louisville - they're probably worried about the whole situation being reflected on their operations. The airport should've had more security measures in place to prevent this from happening in the first place...I mean, a plane just exploding mid-air? That's just insane ๐Ÿ˜ฒ.

The governor and mayor seem to be doing what they can, but you can't help feeling like there are still so many unanswered questions ๐Ÿค”. What really caused this explosion? Was it a faulty engine or something else entirely? And how did the crew members on board even survive the initial crash? These are all things that need to be figured out ASAP ๐Ÿ’ก.

I'm just glad no more people were hurt...and I hope those who lost loved ones find some kind of closure soon ๐Ÿ˜”. This whole thing is just really tough to wrap your head around ๐Ÿคฏ.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿšจ Man, I'm literally dying over here thinking about that crazy plane crash at Louisville airport! Like, what's going on? A 1991 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 just explodes like a bomb?! ๐Ÿคฏ And it was an UPS cargo plane too... how do these things even happen? ๐Ÿ˜” The fact that four people were killed who weren't even on the plane is just heartbreaking. I'm so worried about the three crew members on board, hope they're okay. And what's with all the injuries? Some people are saying it's like a war zone out there... ๐ŸŒช๏ธ Anyway, this airport should be closed for a loooong time, gotta make sure everyone's safe. RIP to those who lost their lives ๐Ÿ’”

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ interesting how a small town like that can get hit by something so big and devastating at an airport... Like, it's not even the plane itself that crashed but all the packages and stuff nearby... The whole area is like a war zone now ๐Ÿ˜ท and I feel bad for the people who lost loved ones or got hurt...

man that's so sad what happened at the airport yesterday I was watching it unfold live like on my phone when it crashed ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i feel bad for those 11 people who got hurt some with major injuries it's crazy how something like this can happen in broad daylight and still manage to catch everyone off guard like a scene from an action movie. it's gonna take ages for the airport to get back to normal i remember when flights were way more safe back in the day my dad used to fly on those old 747s all the time now we're always hearing about some new recall or another... anyway yeah my thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy ๐Ÿค•
