Ukraine Fends Off Russian Advances as War Rages On
In a day marked by heavy fighting along the front lines in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian military reported little change on the ground, despite repeated Russian attacks. The General Staff said more than 45 enemy assaults were repelled, with a focus on the strategically important cities of Lyman and Bakhmut.
According to Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukrainian Land Forces, the Russians have been trying to take full control over Bakhmut but are facing stiff resistance. The Ukrainian forces repelled about 20 enemy attacks west of the city. However, a social media video showed heavy fire exchange between both sides in the Avdiivka area, with Russian forces reportedly surrounded on three sides.
In another development, Denis Pushilin, leader of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, claimed that Russian forces were advancing in the Avdiivka direction, despite Ukrainian claims to the contrary. Meanwhile, Oleksii Dmytrashkivskyi, spokesperson for the military in the Donetsk area, noted that Ukrainian forces had taken some positions and secured a more strategic advantage.
However, according to Pushilin, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult for both sides, with similar challenges posed by terrain and weather conditions. The Ukrainian forces are suffering significant losses, as claimed by Dmytrashkivskyi, who stated that Russian forces "don't have the same amount of equipment and ammunition".
The General Staff also reported 17 air strikes and more than 20 strikes by multiple launch rocket systems, with much of the fighting taking place in the northwest and west of the city of Donetsk. Despite these intense exchanges, Syrskyi insisted that the enemy is weakening and trying to cover up its failures with new propaganda claims about the capture of Bakhmut.
The situation remains fluid on the battlefield, but one thing is clear: both sides are dug in for a long and brutal conflict.
