UK and Ireland cinema takings on post-pandemic high as A Minecraft Movie tops 2025 box office

UK and Irish cinema have bounced back from the pandemic with flying colours, as A Minecraft Movie has emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2025, raking in a whopping £56.88 million. The total box office revenue for the year reached £1.07 billion, up just 1% on the previous year and marking the best annual performance since 2019.

The recovery is seen across all aspects of the industry, with more films released than in 2024 - 1,092 compared to 1,124. However, the number of "saturation" releases, which involve playing in over 250 venues simultaneously, has decreased slightly. This shift in strategy may be a response to the changed market landscape post-pandemic.

Gaming adaptations have proven particularly popular with audiences, as A Minecraft Movie not only topped the UK and Irish box office but also performed well globally. The film's viral impact, including a memorable "chicken jockey" scene, seems to have been key to its success.

British productions have also seen a resurgence in popularity, with the fourth Bridget Jones film taking £46.4 million at the box office. However, it was not enough to beat A Minecraft Movie in terms of total earnings.

The continued strength of "event cinema" releases is another positive sign for the industry. These films accounted for 4.1% of the total box office revenue and included several high-profile productions, including a stage adaptation of Six the Musical which took £6.2 million.

Industry leaders are hailing the results as a significant step forward in the sector's recovery. "Although it saw only a small year-on-year increase in box office," said Phil Clapp, chief executive of the UK Cinema Association, "2025 undoubtedly marked a significant further step in the sector's recovery following the challenges of recent years."

I'm like totally stoked that cinema is back on track 🎥, but at the same time, I'm kinda meh about it. £1.07 billion might not be bad, but isn't it weird that we're still trying to recoup losses from the pandemic? 🤔 And what's up with the number of movies being released? 1,092 is still way more than I think is needed - don't they want to make sure each one can really shine? 💫

And yeah, gaming adaptations are cool and all, but isn't it a bit too easy for them just because people love Minecraft? 🤖 What about indie filmmakers trying to make their own magic? 🎨 On the other hand, I'm so down for another Bridget Jones film - I mean, who doesn't love Renée Zellweger? 😂

And have you seen those "event cinema" numbers? 4.1% of the total box office revenue is actually kind of impressive 💪. Maybe this whole industry thing is turning a corner after all... or maybe it's just a bunch of hype 🤷‍♀️

I don't usually comment but... I'm not surprised to see A Minecraft Movie do so well. I mean, gaming is like such a big deal now and people love watching their fave games come to life on screen. And that "chicken jockey" scene must've been hilarious! 🤣 It's also great to hear that British productions are back in the game - Bridget Jones always had such iconic characters 😂. And I'm happy to see event cinema releases still doing well too, even if it was just 4.1% of the total box office... still better than nothing, right? 🎥💸

Man... it's crazy how quickly things bounce back from those dark days. I mean, £1.07 billion is still an insane number, but what's even more interesting is that the industry is finding new ways to adapt and thrive. That shift towards gaming adaptations makes sense - who wouldn't want to bring their favorite game to life on screen? And it's dope to see British productions making a comeback too 🎥. But you know what really gets me thinking? The idea of "event cinema" releases. It's like, we're not just watching movies anymore, we're part of this communal experience where everyone comes together to feel the rush of emotions on screen 💥. It's all about connection and shared experiences in a world that's increasingly isolated. Anyway, it's great to see the industry finding its footing again 🙏.

omg u guys can we talk about how hyped i am about minecraft movie tho 🤯 it just broke all sorts of records and it's like finally we got a good gaming adaptation on the big screen that's actually enjoyable lol i mean don't get me wrong bridget jones 4 is nice but it can't compete with that viral "chicken jockey" scene 😂 and let's be real british productions have been getting a bit stale since dolly parton's christmas of the queens 🤣 but seriously 2025 has been a solid year for cinema and i'm so here for it 💖

I'm loving how well the cinema scene is bouncing back in the UK and Ireland! 🎥 The numbers are crazy - £1.07 billion is no joke! 😲 A Minecraft Movie taking the top spot is a big deal, I mean who doesn't love gaming and it seems like people were hooked on this one too. The shift to fewer "saturation" releases might be a good thing for the industry, less competition can only make things better, right? 🤔 And those gaming adaptations are definitely winning over audiences. British productions also doing well, especially with Bridget Jones - it's great to see local talent getting some love too. The success of event cinema is another plus, more people are coming out to the movies, that's what we need! 👍

omg I just saw A Minecraft Movie and it was soooo good 🤩 I don't get why they made a movie out of it tho like what's next gonna be a movie about Roblox? 🤣 but anyway congrats to the UK cinema industry, £1.07 billion is insane 💸 did they say how many people went to see A Minecraft Movie? my friend said it was so hyped in the cinemas 🎥

I'm still shocked that A Minecraft Movie is the highest-grossing film of 2025 🤯. I mean, it's just a game come to life on screen... doesn't that sound kinda gimmicky? 🙄 But at the same time, who can deny its massive popularity among gamers and non-gamers alike? It's been a wild ride for UK cinema, with gaming adaptations proving to be a real winner. I'm loving how British productions like Bridget Jones are making a comeback too! 🎥 But, on the other hand, £1.07 billion might not seem that impressive if you ask me... shouldn't we be aiming higher? 😅

🎥💸 I think its awesome that gaming adaptations are killing it at the box office right now. Like, who wouldn't wanna watch a movie about building blocky worlds? 🤔 Minecraft Movie is literally so hyped and I'm not even a gamer myself! But seriously, its gotta be interesting to see how this trend plays out for other games and franchises in the future.

And omg, that chicken jockey scene is EVERYTHING 😂. I mean, its crazy how something as simple as a funny joke can make a whole movie hit it big. Anyway, its also cool to see British productions like Bridget Jones getting back on track after a few years of slow growth 🙌.

I wonder if this means we'll see more gaming adaptations and less traditional movies in the future? Only time will tell! 💭
