The Knowledge | Which football clubs have pictures of people on their badges?

Several football clubs use badges featuring pictures of people.

The Cypriot club Pafos FC has its badge adorned with the image of Evagoras Pallikarides, a local freedom fighter. Similarly, Colo-Colo, a Chilean club that was part of the resistance against Spanish colonisation in the 16th century, wears the face of their former Mapuche chieftain on its badge.

On the other hand, AFC Bournemouth's crest has a portrait of Dickie Dowsett, a player who scored for the team between 1957 and 1962. The image is said to be inspired by Dowsett's diving header against Aston Villa.

RSC Anderlecht features Guy of Anderlecht on its badge, while AC ChievoVerona has a monument to Cangrande della Scala, an Italian nobleman. Vitória de Guimarães, meanwhile, showcases the image of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal.

Sevilla's crest bears the likeness of Ferdinand III of Castille sitting with St Isidor and St Leander, while Nottingham Forest has a badge featuring the face of Robin Hood, albeit for just about 10 years in the past.

Olympiakos features a laurel-crowned Olympic medalist on its badge, which was introduced at the same time as the club adopted its name. Sampdoria's crest features a silhouette profile of a sailor with a pipe - a known depiction of Giovanni Battista, or John the Baptist, the patron saint of Genoese port cities.

Other clubs that feature people on their badges include Sheikh Russell KC, which has the face of the youngest son of Bangladesh president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Samsunspor's badge pays tribute to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, while AFC Columbus had a crest featuring three hard-working persons for 18 years before introducing its current logo.

Greek clubs PAS Lamia 1964 and Asteras Tripolis both have figures from Greece's War of Independence on their badges. Papá Aucas features the profile of an indigenous Huaorani person. Kirkintilloch Rob Roy FC has a great depiction of Rob Roy MacGregor.

There are also examples from other European leagues, including Norway's Rangers and PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch second division, where there are 'triple doubles' - players with three successive double As in their name. Manchester United holds the record for having the most Ballon d'Or winners playing on the same team at different times.

The question is whether Fábio, a 44-45-year-old goalkeeper, holds the record for being the oldest player to play every minute of a top division league season. Vince Simonet also asks if any national league has gone longer without being won by a homegrown manager, and Dan Buchanan queries whether Scotland have been drawn in groups with Brazil and Morocco at different World Cups.

As it is Christmas time, the reader is invited to submit their questions and answers on festive themes for our upcoming special.

I'm telling ya, this is some deep stuff 🤔. These football clubs featuring portraits of historical figures, it's like they're trying to send us a message 🔮. I mean, think about it, Pafos FC's Evagoras Pallikarides was a freedom fighter - what does that have to do with the beautiful game? It's all about hiding in plain sight, if you ask me 😏. And have you noticed how some of these clubs are using images of historical figures from different cultures and time periods? It's like they're trying to create some sort of alternative history 🤖. I'm not saying it's a conspiracy or anything (okay, maybe I am), but there's definitely more to this story than meets the eye 🔍.

I think some of these football clubs using badges featuring people's portraits are pretty cool... 🤔 I mean, who doesn't love a good story behind a team's logo? The idea that some teams have images from local heroes or important historical figures is really interesting. But at the same time, you've got to wonder how many of these stories are totally accurate 😊 For example, I did some digging and found out that Dickie Dowsett was actually a legendary footballer but not exactly sure about his diving header against Aston Villa being the inspiration for AFC Bournemouth's badge... 🤷‍♂️

lol these football clubs are really getting creative with their badges 🤣 i mean who wouldn't want to see robin hood's face on a badge tho 😂 but seriously its cool to see the history behind each club's crest, especially those that have figures from wars or freedom fighters on them ❤️ its like they're telling a story through their logos and it makes you wanna learn more about the clubs and their histories 🤓

I think its pretty cool that some football clubs are using historical figures from their regions or cultures on their badges 💡. Its a great way to pay tribute to the past and show team spirit 👊. But, at the same time, I'm not sure how many people even care about these historical figures 🤔. I mean, I love learning about my own history too, but its not like its going to affect my game of footy on the weekends 😂.

And can we talk about how some of these badges are just plain weird? Like what's with the sailor on Sampdoria's crest or the indigenous person on Papá Aucas' badge 🤷‍♂️? I mean, I get it, they're trying to be unique and all that, but sometimes less is more, right? 👎

But overall, its been fun reading through this list of football club badges and seeing all the different people and historical figures featured 💥. Maybe next year we can do a special on the weirdest football team names ever 😂.

I think it's really cool that some football clubs are putting people's faces on their badges! 🤩 Like Pafos FC with Evagoras Pallikarides, who was a freedom fighter in Cyprus. It's great to see the history and culture of those places being celebrated like this.

And I love how some teams have badges inspired by famous players or historical figures. Like AFC Bournemouth's badge, which is said to be inspired by Dickie Dowsett's diving header against Aston Villa 🏆

It's also interesting to see the different designs across Europe and South America. Some clubs are showing off their national pride, like Vitória de Guimarães with Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal 👑.

But what I think is really cool is that some teams are using these badges as a way to connect with their community and history. Like Papá Aucas featuring an indigenous Huaorani person 🌿

So yeah, let's keep celebrating our cultures and histories through football! 🎉

I don’t usually comment but... I think it's pretty cool that some football clubs are paying tribute to people from their history or culture 🎄. Like, Pafos FC honoring Evagoras Pallikarides is a great way to acknowledge the local heritage of Cyprus, and Colo-Colo showing respect for the Mapuche chieftain is a nice touch. It makes you realize how much football clubs are connected to the people and places around them 🌍. And it's awesome that some teams have such unique badges, like Sampdoria's sailor silhouette 😊. Who knew sailing could be so cool?

you know what's interesting about this whole thing? it's how these badges are not just a random pick of someone's face, but they're actually telling a story about the history and values of the club 🤔. like, pafos fc's badge is all about their local hero evagoras pallikarides, who fought for freedom... it's like they're saying 'hey, we may be small, but we've got heart' 💪. meanwhile, AFC bournemouth's crest is just a cool nod to dickie dowsett's diving header, which is still talked about today 🏆. and then there are the clubs that feature figures from greece's war of independence... it's like they're reclaiming their history and culture 🌎.

anyway, back to fábio, the oldest player in top division league history... i'm not sure if he holds the record, but it just goes to show that age is just a number, right? 💫 and speaking of numbers, have you ever thought about how many people are out there who've played for clubs without being featured on their badges? 🤷‍♂️ it's like they're invisible, or perhaps they just don't fit the narrative of the club's story 📚.

oh, and one more thing... what does it say about our society that we need to look at football clubs' badges to learn about their history and values? shouldn't we be learning from schools and history books instead? 🤔 just a thought 😊.

🤔 I mean, who doesn't love a good nostalgic vibe from their football team's badge? It's like, you get to see a face that's kinda familiar, but also not really, and it's all very... intriguing 🎨. And can we talk about the sheer variety of historical figures and people they've chosen for these badges? I mean, Evagoras Pallikarides is cool and all, but Dickie Dowsett? What's up with that? 😂 Did he have a secret talent for diving? 🤦‍♂️

I'm loving this trend of football clubs using portraits on their badges 🤩! It's so cool to see the history behind each club's crest. I mean, who wouldn't want to look at a picture of Robin Hood's face every time they watch Nottingham Forest play? 😂 But seriously, it's great that they're paying homage to important figures from their past.

I think it's awesome that some clubs are honoring freedom fighters and historical figures like Evagoras Pallikarides. It adds so much depth to the team's identity and makes you appreciate the club's values even more ❤️. And can we talk about how cool it is that AFC Bournemouth has a picture of Dickie Dowsett's diving header on their badge? That's some top-notch football history right there! 🏆

I'm also loving the diversity of clubs featuring different people from various cultures and backgrounds. It's a great way to celebrate our differences and promote unity in the world of football ⚽️. Let's keep seeing more clubs embracing this trend and making it their own! 💖

I think its pretty cool that football clubs are showing off the faces of real people who inspired them 🤔. Like, I get why they'd wanna give credit to guys like Evagoras Pallikarides or Dickie Dowsett, who did some awesome stuff for their teams and communities. But some of these badges feel a bit random - what's up with Sevilla's crest featuring St Isidor and St Leander? Didn't they just choose those two outta thin air? 🤷‍♂️

I dont get why these teams gotta put famous people on their badges 🤔. Its just a bunch of random pics, means nothing to anyone. And what's with the history lessons? Who cares about some old freedom fighter or nobleman from Italy 😴. Its all just a gimmick, makes the teams look like they're trying too hard to be unique. And whats wrong with using a cool logo instead of a portrait 🤷‍♂️.

🤔 what's up with all these clubs having famous faces on their badges? like, aren't they just gonna end up being like a meme or something? 😂 and honestly, who comes up with this stuff? AFC Bournemouth's logo is inspired by some random player scoring a goal 60+ years ago... 🙄 and what's the deal with Sevilla's crest? it's like, Ferdinand III was old when he died... poor guy didn't even get to celebrate christmas in peace 😅

I mean, come on... teams featuring people on their badges? It's just so... meaningful! 🤩 You know what I love about Pafos FC's badge? The image of Evagoras Pallikarides is like a symbol of hope and freedom, right? And Colo-Colo's Mapuche chieftain, wow! What an amazing way to represent their history. I also love AFC Bournemouth's Dickie Dowsett - who wouldn't want to be remembered for that diving header? 😂

But seriously, it's great to see clubs paying tribute to the people behind the game. It makes you appreciate the culture and heritage more, you know? Like how Vitória de Guimarães' Afonso Henriques is like a royal connection to Portugal's history... or Sevilla's Ferdinand III with those saints - it's so cool!

I guess what I'm saying is that these badges aren't just random pictures; they're like little pieces of art that connect you to the team's story. And I think that's what makes football so special. It's not just about winning and losing, but also about the people who've come before us.

Anyway, gotta get into the festive spirit now... submit those questions and answers, let's make this Christmas one for the books! 🎅🏼

SO MANY FOOTBALL CLUBS ARE GETTING CREATIVE WITH THEIR BADGES! IT'S AMAZING TO SEE SO MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE FEATURED ON CLUB LOGOS, EACH WITH THEIR OWN UNIQUE STORY AND HISTORY BEHIND THEM 🤩 I MEAN WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO SEE A PICTURE OF ROBIN HOOD ON THE BADGE OF NOTTINGHAM FOREST, RIGHT? 😂 BUT SERIOUSLY, IT'S GREAT TO SEE CLUBS HONORING THEIR LOCAL HEROES AND HISTORICAL FIGURES. IT ADDS SO MUCH CHARACTER AND DEPTH TO THE GAME 🏆

I think its really cool how some football clubs are paying tribute to historical figures from their region or even local freedom fighters 🏰💪. Its a great way to connect with your community and showcase your heritage. On the other hand, having a diverse range of people on team badges is also pretty awesome - you've got players, nobles, and even a saint 🤣👊. But at the same time, its also a bit surprising that some clubs are using iconic figures from history without giving them proper context or background info 📚. Anyway, I'm excited to see how this trend continues in the football world! 👏

I'm telling ya, this is just too weird... 🤔 Clubs are plastering faces of old folks on their badges, but what's really going on here? Is it some kind of hidden message or code that we're not seeing? I mean, Dickie Dowsett's diving header against Aston Villa is supposed to be the inspiration for AFC Bournemouth's crest, but what if it's something more sinister? 🤞 Like, maybe they're trying to send a signal about the power of sports in distracting us from real issues. And have you seen all these figures with historical significance on the badges of European clubs? It's like they're trying to create some kind of alternative history narrative. 📚 I'm not buying it... 😏

🎄👕 think its cool how some football clubs use pics of people on their badges tho 🤔, like Pafos FC with Evagoras Pallikarides or Colo-Colo with a mapuche chieftain... 🇨🇱 its like they're paying respects to the past or somethin 💡

also wut up wit AFC Bournemouth's badge featuring Dickie Dowsett? 🤷‍♂️ that diving header pic is straight fire 🔥, but on a more serious note, its kinda awesome how some clubs showcase their heritage and history through these badges 👕

anywayz i got a question - who holds the record for most Ballon d'Or winners playin on the same team at diffrent times? 🤔 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ballon_d'Or_winners
