The best theatre to stream this month: the rollicking return of One Man, Two Guvnors

One Man, Two Guvnors is back to bring the laughs and chaos. Richard Bean's 2011 National Theatre hit has been relocated to a British seaside town in the 1960s, with James Corden getting his big break after the show's success. The farce follows the misadventures of two men as they try to navigate their lives and relationships. With its quick-witted dialogue and physical comedy, this show is sure to keep you entertained.

In other news, Big Night of Musicals by the National Lottery is coming to BBC iPlayer in January. This glitzy event features songs from some of the biggest musicals of 2025, including Carrie Hope Fletcher's Calamity Jane and Marisha Wallace's Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Billy Porter, Layton Williams, and Ruthie Henshall are just a few of the talented performers who will be taking to the stage.

For those looking for something a bit darker, The Unquiet Podcast: Stories for Dark Nights has a new series starting with E Nesbit's gothic tale, The Mass for the Dead. This audio drama is designed to be enjoyed in the dark with its haunting sound design and music by Max Pappenheim.

Ice-skaters take center stage in Frederick Ashton's elegant fantasy, Les Patineurs, available on Royal Ballet and Opera Stream. The film features an elite squad of Royal Ballet dancers performing a captivating 30-minute winter warmer.

The Royal Ballet also brings us Breaking Bach, a film that charts the project to introduce young audiences to JS Bach through breakdancing, choreographed by Kim Brandstrup.

Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is getting a new treatment at Stratfest@Home. The 2023 production, directed by Chris Abraham, has been joined by new scenes from feminist playwright Erin Shields, giving Hero greater agency and making the final festivities even sweeter.

Lastly, Next to Normal, Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's Pulitzer prize-winning musical about mental illness, is available on National Theatre at Home. Michael Longhurst's searing production, filmed on its West End transfer, is not to be missed.

Murder at Midnight, a new comedy thriller by Torben Betts, is currently touring the UK with Jason Durr leading the cast. A filmed version of Philip Franks' production is available throughout January from Original Theatre.

And have u heard about Les Patineurs on Royal Ballet and Opera Stream? πŸ’ƒ ice-skaters doing ballet is literally my new fave thing πŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈ

I don’t usually comment but... I was thinking about how many awesome things are happening in theatre and music right now 🀯. Like, have you seen any of these shows or listened to The Unquiet Podcast? They all sound so fascinating! I'm a bit of a fan of musicals myself, I love Billy Porter's voice 😍. And I've been meaning to check out the Royal Ballet's new film, Breaking Bach - breakdancing and Baroque music? That's like a dream come true πŸ’ƒπŸ•Ί. What about you guys, got any faves or recommendations from this lineup? πŸ€”

I remember watching this show back in 2011 when it first came out 🀣! I was at the National Theatre and it was absolute chaos, but in a good way πŸ˜‚. The whole cast was just killing it on stage and I was literally crying laughing. It's great to see that it's coming back and people are still loving it.

As for musicals, I'm not really into those things usually, but Big Night of Musicals sounds like a lot of fun πŸŽ‰. I've heard good things about Carrie Hope Fletcher's Calamity Jane and Marisha Wallace's Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Can't wait to see Billy Porter perform live πŸ’ƒ

I've been meaning to check out some new podcasts, so The Unquiet Podcast: Stories for Dark Nights is right up my alley 🎧. Gothic tales are my jam. And I love that they're doing E Nesbit's gothic tale, The Mass for the Dead.

Ice-skating and ballet are not really my thing, but Les Patineurs sounds beautiful πŸ₯Ά. And Breaking Bach, a film about breakdancing with JS Bach? That's just genius πŸ”₯. Definitely going to have to check that out.

I'm also super excited about Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing getting a new treatment at Stratfest@Home πŸ’•. The original production was amazing and I love the idea of giving Hero greater agency. Can't wait to see the new scenes!

Lastly, Next to Normal is on my watchlist πŸ“Ί. Mental illness is such an important topic and Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's work is just incredible. Michael Longhurst's production sounds searing...in a good way 😱.

And last but not least, I've heard great things about Murder at Midnight πŸ€”. Jason Durr leading the cast is a must-see for me!

omg i'm so stoked for One Man, Two Guvnors to come back to life 🀣🎭 it's like a party on stage and i need that in my life! James Corden was meant to be big after this show lolol and now he's got a career to boot. on another note, Big Night of Musicals sounds like a real treat πŸŽΆπŸ‘ i'm dyin' to see Carrie Hope Fletcher's Calamity Jane come alive on screen. and for all you spooky fans out there, The Unquiet Podcast: Stories for Dark Nights has got me hyped for that gothic tale, The Mass for the Dead πŸ•·οΈπŸ’€

OMG I just found out about One Man, Two Guvnors 🀣 and I'm DYING to watch it! I've heard so many good things about Richard Bean's show and James Corden's big break πŸŽ‰. I love a good farce with lots of physical comedy πŸ˜‚. The National Theatre always does an amazing job of bringing classic shows back to life. And can we talk about the Big Night of Musicals? 🀩 I'm so excited for Billy Porter, Layton Williams, and Ruthie Henshall to perform on BBC iPlayer! 🎀 It's going to be a great January with all these awesome shows out 😊.

ugh, another farce about two guys being annoying? i mean, i get it, some people love that stuff, but can't we have something a bit more... substantial? like, maybe a show about mental health or something? because that's what really matters to me these days πŸ€• the musicals and comedies are all great and all, but let's not forget about the real issues at hand 😩

I'm so stoked about all these awesome shows coming out! πŸŽ‰ Like, have you seen the new treatment of Much Ado About Nothing? 🀩 It's amazing how they've given Hero more agency and it's making the whole story even stronger! 🌟 And can we talk about Next to Normal? 😭 It's so raw and emotional, but in a good way. I love how it tackles mental illness with such sensitivity.

And I'm loving the mix of big musicals and smaller productions - Big Night of Musicals sounds like an absolute blast! πŸŽΆπŸ‘ Ice-skaters performing in Les Patineurs is just magical... ❄️‍♀️ I also heard that Breaking Bach is introducing kids to JS Bach through breakdancing? Genius! πŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈ Who knew breakdancing and Baroque music could be a thing?

I'm also curious about The Unquiet Podcast: Stories for Dark Nights - has anyone listened to it yet? πŸ‘» I love a good spooky story, especially during the winter months. And Murda at Midnight sounds like a hilarious thriller - Jason Durr is so talented! πŸ˜‚

I'm so down for this One Man, Two Guvnors thing 🀣! My kiddos would love the physical comedy and quick-witted dialogue. We've been stuck at home during the holidays too much, it's time to get out and enjoy some live theatre with them! As a parent, I can appreciate how Richard Bean's show brings chaos to the stage - just like our lives sometimes do πŸ˜‚.

I'm hyped about One Man, Two Guvnors coming back to the stage 🀣 it's always a wild ride but I gotta say, I'm a bit worried that it might be too over-the-top for some people. James Corden was definitely on fire when he first played the lead role, but will the show hold up without him? Still, the premise sounds like a blast and I'm excited to see what kind of shenanigans the cast gets up to πŸ‘€
