Sir Alan Bates agrees multimillion-pound settlement over Post Office scandal

Britain's Biggest Scandal Unfolds: Alan Bates Seals Multimillion-Pound Deal with Government

A long and arduous campaign led by 70-year-old Sir Alan Bates, a veteran of the Post Office scandal, has finally come to an end. The renowned actor was portrayed in the popular ITV drama 'Mr Bates vs the Post Office', shedding light on the plight of those wrongly accused. Now, after more than two decades, it appears that justice has been served, albeit with a relatively modest payout.

According to reports, Sir Alan has agreed to a multimillion-pound settlement, which translates to around 49.2% of his original claim – an amount estimated to be in the region of £10m. This deal brings to an end the government's compensation scheme for post office operators, many of whom were wrongly convicted and suffered severe financial ruin due to faulty Horizon IT system.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with Sir Alan himself labeling the current system a "quasi-kangaroo court" in which claimants are left at the mercy of an arbitrary review process. The 2019 judgment that found the system "not remotely robust" seems to have come too late for many, however, as it is estimated that around 900 post office operators were wrongly convicted.

The settlement also follows a series of high-profile criticisms leveled by Sir Alan and others against the Department for Business and Trade, which oversees the compensation schemes. The government's failure to provide clear assurances on the review process has been seen as particularly egregious by those who have lost everything due to the scandal.

As one might expect, this development comes after months of pressure from advocates and families of those affected. With over 1.2 billion pounds paid out to more than 9,000 victims so far, it is clear that justice has finally started to be served – albeit a fraction too late for many.

man its about time this government steps up its game especially after all those years of suffering these poor post office workers were just trying to make ends meet and ended up losing everything 😔💸 10m is nothing compared to what they went through, still better than nothing i guess? feels like the system is only looking out for itself and not really caring about the people affected 🤦‍♂️

this is such amazing news!! i'm beyond relieved that sir alan was able to secure this massive payout after going through all he's been through 🤩💸 10m pounds is just incredible, can only imagine how hard it must have been for him and the others who've suffered like that 💕

I cant believe its taken this long for the government to sort this mess out 🤯. I mean, who's next gonna come forward and get screwed over by the Horizon system? The £10m payout for Sir Alan is nice and all, but 49% of his claim? That's still pretty cringeworthy considering how many people were affected 🤑. What really gets me is that the gov's been making excuses left and right about not being able to do more with less money 😒. It's just a cop-out in my book. At least they're finally doing something, though...I guess 1.2 billion pounds is better than nothing 💸

I dont get why its taken so long for them to sort this out. I mean, I know its a big deal and all, but £10m just seems like a drop in the ocean to me 🤑...and I thought we were fighting for justice here? Its not fair on the people who have lost everything because of this system. They should be getting so much more than that.

I'm so frustrated about this whole thing... 🤯 The fact that Sir Alan Bates had to go through all that drama and stress just to get some semblance of justice is just heartbreaking. I mean, think about it - these people were already going through a lot, being wrongly accused and having their livelihoods destroyed. And then they have to fight this arduous campaign, with so much uncertainty and emotional toll... it's just not right.

And what really grinds my gears is that the government's response has been pretty slow and underwhelming. I mean, we've already paid out over 1.2 billion pounds, which is a good start, but £10m for Sir Alan Bates? That's still a fraction of what some people have lost. It just feels like the system is broken, you know?

I think it's high time that the government takes responsibility and makes things right for these people. We need to see real change, not just token gestures like this settlement. The fact that Sir Alan himself said the review process was a "quasi-kangaroo court" should be taken seriously - it's clear that there's still so much work to be done.

Anyway, I'm just glad that justice is finally being served... even if it's a bit belated 😔

😕 I'm glad Alan Bates was able to get some justice after all these years 🤞 10 million quid might not seem like a lot, but for the people who lost everything, it's still better than nothing 💸. And honestly, I think the system is broken and needs a complete overhaul 🔧. All this pressure and pressure alone didn't make it happen, but I'm glad the advocates were able to keep pushing 🙌. We should all be grateful for people like Alan Bates who aren't afraid to speak out and fight for what's right 💪.

man, i'm so happy this is finally happening!!! 🙌 i mean, those post office folks have been through hell and back, all because of some dodgy computer system and they deserve every penny of that £10m! 900 people wrongly convicted? that's just not right. the government has to take responsibility for their failure to act sooner. it's a shame it took months of pressure from advocates and families to get this deal done... but i suppose better late than never, right? 🤞 let's hope this is the start of real change and those who suffered don't have to live with the consequences forever

Ugh, £10m? That's not even close to what I think they deserve 🤑. And the fact that it's only 49.2% of his original claim is just a drop in the ocean 💧. I mean, can you imagine how frustrating and stressful this whole process must have been for Sir Alan and all those others who were wrongly convicted? It's like the system was designed to fail them 🚫.

And don't even get me started on the review process being arbitrary 🤯. That's just not good enough. The government needs to do a lot more to make sure these people are properly compensated 💸. I mean, £1.2 billion is a decent start, but it's still a long way from justice being served ⏰.

I'm glad that Sir Alan and his team were able to get this deal done after all these years 😔, but at the same time, I wish they didn't have to fight so hard for it in the first place 🤦‍♂️. It's just not right that people had to suffer like this because of a faulty system 💻.

can you believe the government's slow response? it's like they're trying to cover up their own incompetence! £10m for 49% of alan bates' claim... what about the others who didn't get as lucky? this is just a slap on the wrist after all these years. i'm glad alan finally got some justice, but what about the ones who'll never see the compensation they deserve? 🤬💸

Omg 🤯 this deal is like, totally not enough considering how long those people suffered 😔 10m pounds is just a drop in the ocean compared to what they lost 💸 and I feel so bad for them 🙏 the system has been so messed up for years 😩 it's about time someone takes responsibility but sadly it's probably too late for many victims 💔

🤔 I think this deal is better late than never. £10m might seem like a lot, but you've gotta put it into perspective - these people lost their businesses, homes, and livelihoods because of some dodgy software. It's not just about the money; it's about the principle. The fact that we're still dealing with a system where people can be wrongly convicted is unacceptable 🚫.

I also feel sorry for Sir Alan, he's been fighting this fight for over 20 years, and it's taken a toll on him. I'm glad he's finally getting some closure, but at what cost? The government should've done more to support these people from the start. This settlement might be a small victory, but it's just the beginning - we need real change, not just lip service 💡.

The fact that it took a high-profile campaign like Sir Alan's to bring this issue to light is pretty stark, though. We should be doing better, as a society, in supporting our own 🤝.

🤔 I mean, £10m is still a decent chunk of change, but considering how long this all took and how many people were wrongfully convicted, it feels like a pretty meager payout. The fact that the government had to be forced into this settlement after so much pressure from advocates and families makes you wonder what could've been done earlier to prevent this whole mess from happening in the first place.

And I'm not sure how comforting it is for those who were affected, knowing they'll get a fraction of their lost earnings back. It's also a bit worrying that over 1.2 billion pounds has already been paid out to more than 9,000 victims so far – where did most of that money even go? Were there any funds set aside specifically for people like Sir Alan Bates who had to fight for years to get justice?

I guess it's better late than never, but can we imagine what could've happened if this whole scandal was handled more proactively and with less finger-pointing?

I feel super sorry for these post office workers who went through all this stress & pain... £10m seems like a lot but I guess its better late than never 🤕💸. 70 years old Sir Alan Bates is still going strong fighting for justice, that's so inspiring! 👏 His campaign was long & tough, I hope it brings some peace of mind to those affected. The gov't should really be more clear about their processes from the start... how many people have to suffer like this? 😔
