Oakland Police Respond to Shooting at Laney College, Injuring Athletic Director John Beam, Star of Netflix Docuseries "Last Chance U"
A shooting at Oakland's Laney College on Thursday has left a senior member of the school's athletic staff, John Beam, injured. The attack occurred just before noon and sent medics rushing to the scene, where they transported Beam to the hospital. The condition of the victim was not immediately available.
Beam, the former head football coach of the Laney College Eagles and star of the Netflix docuseries "Last Chance U," has been at the center of a national spotlight for his coaching philosophy and mentorship of student-athletes. In 2018, he led the Eagles to a state championship victory, while boasting an impressive 90% graduation and transfer rate to four-year colleges.
According to Acting Oakland Police Chief James Beere, the incident was isolated and did not involve an active shooter. However, the police were urged to exercise caution, and students and employees at Laney College were warned to avoid the area.
The shooting comes on the heels of another violent incident on an Oakland campus just last week, when a teenager was injured in a shooting at Skyline High School. The two incidents have raised concerns about gun violence and safety on school campuses in the city.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee condemned the latest attack, saying that "we must continue confronting the ongoing gun violence crisis" and vowing to address this issue with urgency.
