‘Scary, cold, hungry and lonely’: Volunteer soldier shares experience on front line | CNN

Exclusive Interview Reveals Harrowing Reality Behind the Front Lines of War

A young volunteer soldier, Akula, who enlisted in the early stages of Russia's invasion, is now grappling with the devastating effects of war on his mental well-being. In an intimate and candid conversation with CNN journalist David McKenzie, Akula shared a harrowing account of his time on the front lines.

Akula described the experience as "scary," "cold," "hungry," and "lonely" – emotions that have become all too familiar for him since joining the conflict. The 20-year-old soldier recounted the physical and emotional challenges he faced while fighting in a war-torn region, including exposure to extreme temperatures, meager rations, and prolonged periods of isolation.

The psychological toll of war on Akula's mental health was evident as he spoke about the struggles he has faced since returning home. "It's been tough," he admitted. "Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and feel like I'm back there." His experiences have left him with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

Akula's story serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict, where young lives are forever altered by the trauma they endure on the front lines. As one of the first wave of volunteer soldiers to be deployed in this war-torn region, Akula's experiences provide a unique perspective on the complexities of modern warfare and its effects on those who fight it.

The interview highlights the need for greater support services for troops returning from conflict zones, where they often struggle to reintegrate into civilian life. As Akula's story illustrates, the scars of war can be long-lasting, and it is essential that we prioritize their mental well-being in the aftermath of conflict.

I cant even imagine what its like to go through all that on the front lines 🤕, you know, back in my day, we had our share of wars too, but at least we didnt have all these fancy tech gadgets and social media to document it all... I mean, my friends would come back from war and be like "its cool, lets go party" but deep down they were traumatized 😔. Nowadays its so much more intense, with all the pressure of being a modern soldier and having PTSD to deal with too... I wish they had more support services for these kids, its heartbreaking to see them struggling like that 🤝.

🤕 Watching videos like this one makes me so emotional... It's heartbreaking to think about young people like Akula being sent to fight in a war zone and having to deal with all those harsh conditions. PTSD is no joke, you guys 😩. I mean, can't we just focus on finding peace and resolving conflicts without putting innocent lives at risk? 🤝 We need more stories like Akula's out there so that we can raise awareness about the importance of mental health support for our soldiers. 💔

I'm so down on this whole volunteer soldier thing 🤦‍♂️. I mean, what's next? Letting people just join the military for fun? It's not like they have better things to do with their lives...like playing video games or something 😒. And don't even get me started on the PTSD thing. Like, isn't that just a fancy way of saying "you're messed up"? 🙄. I swear, if I joined the military for 5 minutes, I'd be traumatized too after seeing some propaganda videos...anyway, more support services? Please, just let them get back to their normal lives already! 🙃

Omg this guy Akula's story is like so heartbreaking 🤕... I mean, he was just a teenager when he enlisted and now he's struggling with PTSD and stuff... it's like, what even is war? 😩... these young people are getting sent to fight in these crazy situations and then they come back expecting everything to be okay? 😞... we need more support for them, you know? 🤝

🤕 this interview just breaks my heart, you know? its like, our gov is fighting a war on one hand but they're not even providing proper care for these soldiers on the other hand. think about it, a 20-year-old kid enlisting for adventure but ends up being traumatized by war and we're still trying to figure out how to help them 🤯

i mean, what's the point of having a voluntary army if they're not gonna be taken care of? its like, our gov is all about national pride but whats more important than the lives of our soldiers? i think it is 💔 and we need to start taking this seriously before someone else has to go through what akula went through 🤝

😔 my heart is breaking thinking about akula's story... those rations must've been super thin & the cold must've felt like an eternity 🥶 he's not alone, though - so many of our young soldiers are going thru this 💕 we need to make sure they get the support they need when they come back home 💪

I'm getting chills thinking about young people like Akula putting their lives on the line for their country 🤕😢. The fact that he's struggling with PTSD after just a year into the war is heartbreaking, and it's clear that our mental health support systems need a major overhaul 💔👥. We can't just leave these brave individuals to deal with the trauma alone – we need more resources and services in place for them when they get back home 🌎💪.

IT'S SO HEARTBREAKING TO SEE YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE AKULA GO THROUGH THIS KIND OF STUFF 🤕🌫️ THEY'RE NOT KIDS ANYMORE, THEY'RE ACTUALLY FIGHTING FOR THEIR COUNTRY AND IT TAKES A TOLL ON THEM MENTALLY & EMOTIONALLY 😩💔 I THINK WE NEED TO DO MORE TO SUPPORT THESE SOLDIERS WHEN THEY COME BACK HOME, LIKE PROPER MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AND A SAFE PLACE TO RECOVER 💕🏠

I don't think we should be having a conversation about how hard it is for soldiers like Akula to adjust back home 🤔. I mean, come on, he's a volunteer! He knew what he was getting himself into when he joined up. If he can't handle the stress of war, then maybe he shouldn't have enlisted in the first place 😒. We need people who are willing to put themselves in harm's way for their country, not just some whiny kid who can't cope with a little bit of loneliness and hunger. Let's stop making excuses for our soldiers and start expecting more from them 💪.

man this kid akula is a total legend for speaking up about what he went through on the front lines its so crazy how some ppl think war is all heroic and patriotic but really its just a bunch of young people getting hurt and struggling with PTSD like akula's story needs to be shared so we can raise awareness and support for these troops 💔🇷🇺

omg this guy Akula's story is literally heartbreaking 😩 he went through so much on the front lines and now he's struggling with PTSD 🤕 it's crazy how mental health can be affected by something like war 🤔 i feel bad for him that he has to deal with all these emotions every day 💔 and what's even worse is that he can't just go back to normal life after fighting in a war zone 🙅‍♂️ like, how do you ever shake off the memories of being in a situation where people are dying left and right? 😱

I'm so moved by Akula's story 🤕. It's heartbreaking to think about what he's been through on the front lines - extreme temperatures, hunger, loneliness... it's like something out of a nightmare 😱. And now that he's back home, the PTSD symptoms are really taking a toll on him. It's so important that we prioritize his mental well-being and support systems for troops returning from conflict zones 🤝. We need to make sure they get the help they need to recover and reintegrate into civilian life without struggling too much 😔.

It's also really eye-opening to think about how common PTSD is worldwide, with millions of people affected by it 💔. It's a harsh reminder that war has real human costs, and we should be doing everything we can to support those who have been impacted by it 🌟.
