NYC temperatures could cause frostbite in minutes this weekend

New York City is bracing itself for a brutal weekend of cold weather that could lead to frostbite in as little as 30 minutes. Temperatures are expected to plummet to levels of up to 15 degrees below zero, with wind chills making the air feel even colder.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning for the city, advising people to stay indoors and limit their time outside. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pleaded with New Yorkers to take precautions, urging them to dress warmly and prioritize their safety.

Gothamist reported on Saturday evening that around 20 people huddled together in a mobile warming center outside the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, wrapped in blankets and seeking refuge from the cold. However, some individuals were not aware of this resource, highlighting a communication breakdown that Mayor Mamdani acknowledged was critical to rectify.

Mike Lopez, who works outdoors all day, highlighted his struggles with asthma exacerbated by the extreme cold and people vaping in public spaces. He expressed frustration at the lack of resources available for those struggling with these issues.

Mayor Mamdani has launched an "all-hands-on-deck" effort to address the crisis, including reopening schools as warming centers and deploying outreach workers to reach vulnerable populations. The city is also operating 65 warming facilities in all, as well as adding new hotel shelter units for people hesitant to enter congregate settings.

Despite these efforts, concerns remain about access to resources, with Gothamist reporting that even police officers were unaware of the warming center outside the Staten Island Ferry Terminal on a recent night. The city is working to address this issue by installing clear signage and ensuring that everyone knows where to find assistance.

The National Weather Service has warned of wind gusts up to 50 mph, which could cause significant disruptions. Driving conditions are expected to be hazardous, and residents are advised to exercise caution when traveling.

Temperatures are forecasted to reach highs around the mid-30s on Monday, indicating a gradual return to milder weather. However, for now, New Yorkers must prioritize their safety and take necessary precautions to stay warm.

Ugh, NYC is literally freezing ๐Ÿฅถ! I'm not surprised though, the forecast was saying something crazy like temps could drop that low 30 mins after sunrise lol. So serious though, this cold snap is a whole different story. People gotta be careful out there, it's not just the frostbite risk but also asthma attacks & vaping-related health issues ๐Ÿšญ. I'm all for the city's "all-hands-on-deck" effort, reopening schools as warming centers is genius! They should also give more resources to outreach workers tho, some people might be too proud to accept help ๐Ÿ˜”. The police officers not knowing about that warming center outside the ferry terminal? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ That's a major fail! Anyway, fingers crossed temps come back up by Monday ๐Ÿ™

Brrr ๐Ÿฅถ this cold weather is crazy! I'm not surprised tho, winter in NYC can be brutal ๐Ÿ˜’. I feel bad for people who have asthma like Mike Lopez, it's so important to have resources available for them. The city is doing a lot to address the issue, but I hope they can get some of these warming centers and hotel shelter units up ASAP โฑ๏ธ.

I'm also worried about the communication breakdown, how can you not know where there are warming centers? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ The mayor's efforts to raise awareness are good, but we need to make sure everyone knows where to go for help. And with wind gusts up to 50mph, it's gonna be a wild ride on the roads ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

I'm glad they're reopening schools as warming centers tho, that's a genius idea ๐Ÿ’ก. And I love how the city is getting more hotel shelter units in place, it'll make a big difference for people who are hesitant to go into congregate settings ๐Ÿค. Let's hope we can get through this weekend safely and warm โ„๏ธ.

ugh I'm livid that ppl rnt even aware of warming centers ๐Ÿ˜ก. like, how do u not know where 2 find help wen ur struggling? it's insane that police officers rnt even informed ๐Ÿšจ. we need better comms systems in place 4 emergencies like this. also, can't believe people r vaping in public spaces when ppl r literally freezing outside ๐Ÿคฎ. asthma is no joke & extreme cold can exacerbate conditions big time. gotta do better, NYC ๐Ÿค

its crazy how one bad weekend can hit the city so hard... ppl need to be extra cautious out there, like if u gotta go outside, wrap up good & dont be afraid to ask for help ๐Ÿ˜Š 65 warming facilities is a start but theres still room 4 improvement ๐Ÿค” gotta make sure everyone knows where 2 find assistance, cant have people freezing b4 we get the resources 2 them โ„๏ธ

Ugh, 15 below zero? That's crazy! I don't think I could handle being outside for that long, especially with the wind chill. It sounds like a real emergency situation. Why did people not know about the warming center in Staten Island? It's just not right. They should have clear signs everywhere so everyone knows where to go if they need help.

I'm kinda worried about those people who vape in public spaces. I know it's a thing, but isn't it bad for your lungs? And what about people with asthma like Mike Lopez? They must be struggling big time in this cold weather. The city should do more to help them out.

๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿฅถ oh man this cold is crazy!!! i feel bad for those ppl struggling with asthma & other health issues ๐Ÿค• 20 people huddled together outside the ferry terminal? that's heartbreaking ๐ŸŒƒ u gotta wonder how many more ppl don't even know about these warming centers ๐Ÿค” mayor mamdani's doing a good job tho, at least he's acknowledging the issue ๐Ÿ‘ reopening schools as warming centers is genius ๐Ÿ“š & adding new hotel shelter units will definitely help ๐Ÿจ but we need more resources for outdoor workers like mike lopez ๐ŸŒŸ vaping in public spaces? no way that's just cruel โ„๏ธ can't wait till monday when temps are finally gonna rise above 0 โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿฅถ๐Ÿ’ฆ OMG, 15 degrees below zero?! That's like, crazy! I'm not even kidding, the stats are wild too - National Weather Service says this extreme cold wave is expected to hit NYC with wind chills as low as -30ยฐC (that's like, -22ยฐF for you non-metric folks)! ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

According to Gothamist, 65 warming facilities are already up and running... that's still not enough considering how many people are struggling. And, can we talk about the lack of resources? I mean, even police officers weren't aware of the warming center outside Staten Island Ferry Terminal?! That's like, a major fail! ๐Ÿšจ

Temperature-wise, it's gonna be a wild ride - highs in mid-30s on Monday... but, for now, New Yorkers gotta prioritize their safety and stay warm. I'm talking hot chocolate, cozy sweaters, the works! ๐Ÿ˜Š According to CDC, frostbite can happen in as little as 30 minutes in extreme cold weather like this. So, let's all just take it easy, okay? ๐Ÿค—

Here's a quick breakdown of the forecast:

* Wind gusts up to 50 mph
* Temperatures plummeting to -10ยฐC (14ยฐF) by Saturday morning
* Wind chill: as low as -30ยฐC (-22ยฐF)
* Expected damage: significant disruptions, hazardous driving conditions

I gotta disagree with all this fuss about cold weather ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, 15 degrees below zero? That's not that bad! Everyone should just toughen up a bit, you know? It's like when the sun comes out and it gets really hot - nobody complains then, right? โ„๏ธ People are always whining about something. What's the big deal about a little cold? We've got central heating for a reason ๐Ÿ . And another thing, if people can't handle a bit of frostbite, maybe they shouldn't be working outdoors in the first place... just saying ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

โ„๏ธ๐Ÿšจ It's better to be safe than sorry! As the saying goes "Forewarned is forearmed", we're seeing the consequences of extreme cold weather in NYC ๐Ÿค•. The city needs to do more to educate its residents, especially vulnerable populations, about available resources and safety measures ๐Ÿ“ข.

OMG u guys! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm literally living vicariously thru this story of ppl having 2 deal with -20 degrees in nyc lol idk how they do it 1 day. asthma & vaping issues r super concerning esp w/ all these ppl out there shivering rn ๐Ÿšจ gotta give major props 2 mayor mamdani 4 takin initiative & getting those warming centers up ASAP ๐Ÿ‘

Ugh ๐Ÿค’ this cold snap is crazy! I'm so worried about people getting frostbite or something worse ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Can't believe some ppl rnt aware of warming centers like that ๐Ÿ™„. We need more public awareness campaigns, like a city-wide alert system to remind folks where they can get help. And what's up with all the vaping in public spaces? It's already hard enough for people w/ asthma & now it's even harder due 2 extreme cold โ„๏ธ. I'm just glad Mayor Mamdani is taking this seriously & putting out resources everywhere ๐Ÿ™. More warming facilities & outreach workers would be huge ๐Ÿ’ฏ. Can't wait til Monday, weather's gonna get a lil better โ˜€๏ธ.

Ugh, 15 degrees below zero? That's crazy! ๐Ÿคฏ I feel for those people who are struggling with asthma or vaping in public spaces. It's like, we gotta have some basic resources in place, you know? ๐Ÿ™„ Like, Mike Lopez said it, the lack of resources is a huge problem. I mean, 20 people huddled together in a mobile warming center is not enough! We need to do better than that.

And yeah, Mayor Mamdani's effort to reopen schools and deploy outreach workers is a good start, but we need to make sure everyone knows about it. Clear signage is key here! ๐Ÿ“ข I'm glad the city is adding new hotel shelter units too, that's gonna help a lot of people.

But, like, what's with the communication breakdown? ๐Ÿค” How do 20 people not know about a warming center just outside their doorstep? It's like, we gotta make sure our emergency services are on point. And those wind gusts up to 50 mph? That's serious business! We need to be prepared.

I'm just glad temperatures are expected to rise by Monday. For now, though, I feel for the people out there braving this crazy cold weather. Stay warm, NYC! โ„๏ธ

ugh 15 below zero? that's crazy ๐Ÿคช! i feel bad for people struggling with asthma or other breathing issues in this kind of cold. have you seen those pics of ppl huddled together outside the ferry terminal? it's heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•. mayor mamdani's all-hands-on-deck effort is a good start, but we need better communication about warming centers and resources. like, how many ppl are actually aware of these places? ๐Ÿค”. i hope they can get the word out there and help people stay safe this weekend ๐Ÿ’ก. btw, 65 warming facilities ain't bad, but we should be aiming for more ๐Ÿšจ.

๐Ÿคฏ 30 minutes of frostbite is crazy cold fam! I feel bad for those people struggling with asthma and other health issues 'cause the cold air is gonna make it super hard for them ๐Ÿ‘Ž. The city needs to step up its game and get more resources out there ASAP ๐Ÿ’ช, like more warming centers and hotel shelter units ๐Ÿจ. Can't believe some ppl didn't know about that mobile warming center outside the Staten Island Ferry Terminal ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ... clear signage would be a good idea ๐Ÿ˜Š. Wind gusts up to 50 mph? That's just crazy windy ๐Ÿ’จ! Hope everyone stays safe and warm this weekend โ„๏ธ!
