Mets acquire pitcher Joey Gerber in trade with Rays

The New York Mets have bolstered their bullpen by acquiring right-hander Joey Gerber from the Tampa Bay Rays in a cash swap. The 28-year-old, who had been with the Rays' Triple-A affiliate for most of 2025, brings some much-needed depth to the Mets' relief corps.

Gerber's MLB career has been marked by inconsistency, as he posted a 6.23 ERA in 43 1/3 innings at the minors level this year, but has also shown flashes of promise, including a 3.60 ERA across 20 innings with the Rays and Mariners earlier this season.

Despite the lack of control in his minor league stint, Gerber's fastball is reportedly clocked in the mid-90s, making him an intriguing prospect to add some velocity to the Mets' bullpen. With the team exercising Brooks Raley's $4.75 million option for 2026 and declining Drew Smith's club option, there may be opportunities for Gerber to carve out a role with the team.

In other news, the Mets have also secured their top lefty reliever Brooks Raley for next season, while relievers A.J. Minter and Frankie Montas are set to return in 2026 under their player options. The team has also signed lefty Brandon Waddell to a one-year contract for $2 million, with the caveat that he will no longer be eligible for minor league assignments.

The Mets' bullpen may not have been as solid as some of its competitors this season, but adding Gerber could help shore up their relief corps and provide some much-needed depth.

omg just heard about Joey Gerber being acquired by the Mets 🀩 I think it's a great move! They need someone with that velocity to spice up their bullpen. 6.23 ERA in minors is rough but if he can bring that fastball to the big leagues, watch out! πŸ’₯ The fact that they're exercising Raley's option and declining Smith's makes me think Gerber's got a legit shot at making the team 🀞 And signing Waddell for $2 million? Nice move by the Mets, they need all the depth they can get 😊

Ugh, can't even watch a baseball game without thinking about all the other stuff going wrong πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Like, have you seen the latest climate report? Rising temperatures are gonna make it harder for plants to grow, which is already stressing our food supply... πŸŒͺ️ Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse, we gotta worry about baseball players' ERAs too πŸ€”. Anyway, I guess Joey Gerber's addition might help the Mets bullpen... but let's be real, it's not like they're gonna make a dent in the bigger picture πŸ’Έ

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda cool how the Mets are trying to mix things up with Gerber πŸ€”. He’s got some crazy speed on that fastball but yeah, the control thing is a bummer. Still, you never know what can happen when guys get more experience and get settled in. Maybe he just needs one solid season to prove himself? πŸ’ͺ The Mets have been trying to patch up their bullpen for ages so it’ll be interesting to see if Gerber can bring some much-needed stability 🀞

Idk about this one... I mean, what's the point of gettin a reliever who can't even keep it under 6 ERAs in the minors? Like, if he's gonna bring that kind of heat, why not just sign someone like, I dunno, Shane McClanahan or somethin? He'd probably be way more reliable than Gerber. And whats with the team exercisin Raley's option and droppin Smiths? Are they tryin to get rid of the guys who can actually get it done?

I'm so glad they finally picked up Gerber 🀞. I mean, back in my day, we didn't have all these analytics tools, but we knew a good fastball was like gold πŸ’₯. And with his velocity in the mid-90s, he's got that potential to be a game-changer for the bullpen. It's crazy how many young arms come and go, but Gerber might just bring some much-needed stability πŸ™. And I'm not even mad about Raley staying on, it's nice to have some continuity in the bullpen. Not to mention Waddell signing for a decent price, that's always good to hear πŸ’Έ. Now if they could just sort out their rotation and starting lineup... oh wait, I remember when we used to make trades at the deadline and actually won something πŸ†

just thinkin about gerber comin in to help the mets bullpen... hope he can bring that velocity to help the team out πŸš¨πŸ‘ he's been all over the place this season but at least he's got that 90+ mph fastball πŸ’ͺ. need him to step up his game and be more consistent so they don't have to rely on smith or waddell too much 😬. but hey, at least gerber's got some potential... fingers crossed he can become a key guy for the bullpen πŸ’•

πŸ€” So I'm kinda thinking that this move by the Mets is a good one... they needed some backup in the bullpen and Joey Gerber's got some skills πŸš€. I mean, his ERA was pretty bad in the minors, but he's also shown some promise. And let's be real, who doesn't love a fast ball in the mid-90s? 😎 The problem with the Mets' bullpen this year has been the lack of consistency, so if Gerber can bring that depth and some stability to the team, then I think it's a win-win πŸ†.

im thinking gerbers addition is a good move for the mets, he's got some weird numbers in the minors but that 3.60 era with the mariners was pretty promising, plus his fastball speed is a big plus. they're getting guys like waddell who might not be as flashy but are reliable, and it looks like raley is locked down for next year too so i think the bullpen could get some stability with gerber's arrival

Ugh, a new arm to try and turn the Mets' bullpen into a decent unit πŸ™„. I mean, Joey Gerber's got potential, but 6.23 ERA in the minors? That's like a participation trophy for pitchers πŸ˜‚. Still, at least his fastball is clocked in the mid-90s, so maybe he can bring some much-needed velocity to the team πŸ’¨.

It's also nice that they're giving Brooks Raley another shot at being their top lefty reliever πŸ™Œ. And hey, A.J. Minter and Frankie Montas are coming back, so fingers crossed they can stay healthy and not totally embarrass the team again 🀞. Brandon Waddell's signing is a solid move, but it'll be interesting to see how he fits into the bullpen without minor league assignments πŸ€”.

I guess adding Gerber's depth will help the Mets' relief corps, but I'm still skeptical about their chances of making a playoff run πŸŽ‰. Still, I'll eat my words if they surprise everyone and become a contender next season πŸ‘€.

the mets are finally making some moves to bolster their bullpen πŸ”„ it's about time they brought in someone with a bit more consistency, because gerber's numbers aren't exactly inspiring - 6.23 era is pretty rough. but at the same time, his fastball is clocked in the mid-90s which is definitely something to get excited about ⚑️ and with raley locked down for next season, maybe this can be the spark they need.

the thing that's got me curious is how gerber is going to shake out in terms of his role. is he gonna be a setup man? an opener? or just a standard mid-relation reliever? i'm not sure if his inconsistency at the minor league level is something that can be fully ironed out, but hey, maybe this is exactly what they need - someone who's got a bit of potential and some raw talent.

and on a slightly unrelated note, i think it's cool that the mets are signing waddell to a one-year deal for $2 million. it's not like they're breaking the bank or anything 😊

πŸ€— just heard about Joey Gerber being picked up by the Mets... poor guy had a rough season in minors πŸ€• 6.23 ERA is crazy! but I love that they're giving him a chance to prove himself 😊 he's got that sweet fastball clocked in the mid-90s, maybe it'll help him find his groove? 🌟

man I'm so glad to see the Mets making moves to strengthen their bullpen πŸ™ŒπŸ½! Joey Gerber's addition is a great catch, especially with his fastball reaching the mid-90s - that's some serious velocity πŸ’¨! And with Brooks Raley locked in for next season and some of the other relievers returning under player options, I think we're gonna see a big improvement in their bullpen performance πŸš€. I'm all about giving these guys a chance to shine and make some noise in 2025 πŸ‘Š

omg I dont think gerber is gonna make a huge impact tho, like he's got his ups & downs πŸ€”... i mean im sure he'll try his best, but 6.23 era in the minors isnt exactly stellar πŸ’”. and whats up with him being clocked in the mid-90s though? that fast isnt always gonna be reliable πŸ•³οΈ

I'm just wondering how someone who was doing pretty badly in the minors can just come back and be like "oh, I've got a fastball that hits 95mph" πŸ€”πŸ’¨. Like, what's changed? Is it the mindset? The environment? Did they just magically get better over the summer? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's interesting to see how teams work, but sometimes I feel like these trades are based on a lot of guesswork...

man i dont think they did enough to fix their bullpen... gerber's stats are straight up shaky at best his fastball is cool and all but the rest of his game is weak im not expecting big things from him especially with ray's getting rid of him in a cash swap lol what a move πŸ€‘
