Mass shooting outside Utah Mormon church grew from dispute between funeral goers: police

Shooting Outside Mormon Church Triggers Outrage and Investigation After Funeral Dispute Turns Deadly

A deadly shooting outside a Mormon church in Salt Lake City has left two people dead, six injured, and police scrambling for answers about the motive behind the violence.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots coming from the parking lot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where a funeral was underway. The incident occurred when individuals who knew each other and were attending the same event got into a heated argument over a dispute that escalated into gunfire.

"It was really heartbreaking to hear and see," said one neighbor, describing the chaotic scene outside their apartment next door. "We hear gunshots in our neighborhood almost daily, but never right outside our door."

Police have stated that they do not believe the shooting was random or targeted at the faith specifically. However, with tensions running high, the community remains on edge.

"This should never have happened outside a place of worship," Mayor Erin Mendenhall said. "This should never have happened outside a celebration of life."

The church has cooperated with law enforcement and expressed gratitude for the first responders' swift actions.

"We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind," said Sam Penrod, a spokesperson for the church.

As investigators review license plate readers and surveillance videos from nearby businesses, they are working to determine the motive behind the shooting. No arrests have been made so far.

The faith has been on high alert since a former Marine opened fire in a Michigan church in September, killing four people and setting it ablaze. The FBI found that he was motivated by "anti-religious beliefs" against Latter-day Saints.

With tensions still simmering, the community is left to pick up the pieces and mourn the loss of life.

๐Ÿ˜” Oh man, this is just so heartbreaking... I can only imagine how scary it must have been for those who were there at the church, attending the funeral and then suddenly hearing gunshots outside. It's just awful that it escalated into something like that. The community is already on edge after what happened in Michigan a few months ago, and this just makes things worse ๐Ÿค•. I hope the investigators can get to the bottom of it and bring some justice to the families of those who were lost ๐Ÿ˜ข. And yeah, the fact that it happened outside a place of worship just feels so senseless ๐Ÿ’”. Sending all my thoughts to Salt Lake City and the Mormon community right now ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’•

can't believe this happened outside a church, it's like a movie ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿšซ where you never wanna be. police should get to the bottom of this ASAP ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ. no need for revenge, just peace & love โค๏ธ. funeral is one thing, but gunshots outside... it's just not right ๐Ÿ˜”. we gotta support our neighbors & each other during these tough times ๐Ÿค

I'm shocked by this senseless violence outside a church where people were gathered to celebrate life. It's just heartbreaking that it had to happen like this ๐Ÿค•. I get why the authorities are looking into whether it was a random attack or something more targeted, but come on, two lives lost and six hurt - can't we just take a moment to think about the bigger picture here? ๐Ÿ˜”. The church has been super cooperative with the investigation, so that's a good sign. But still, this whole thing is just really disturbing ๐Ÿคฏ. I'm not buying the "anti-religious beliefs" angle from the FBI after what happened in Michigan last month... seems like we're seeing some weird patterns here ๐Ÿ”. The mayor's right, though - a sacred space shouldn't be subjected to violence, period ๐Ÿ’”.

Ugh, this is so unfair! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ People need to calm down and think before they act, you know? Like, those two dudes had a disagreement, but it doesn't mean everyone else deserves to get shot at. I'm not saying the church shouldn't be safe or anything, but maybe we should try to understand where these guys are coming from instead of judging them right off the bat. The faith isn't to blame here, it's just a bunch of people with bad attitudes. And yeah, this reminds me of that other shooting in Michigan... ๐Ÿค” But let's not jump to conclusions and assume everyone who disagrees with us is a crazy person. Can we try to be more empathetic? ๐Ÿค—

Ugh, can you believe this ๐Ÿคฏ? A funeral, of all places! I mean, I know things are tense and stuff, but come on... a church is supposed to be a place of peace and love, not a hotspot for gunfights ๐Ÿ˜”. And now the whole community is shaking with fear, it's just not right.

I'm all for justice and getting to the bottom of this, but can we please try to stay calm and rational? We can't just jump to conclusions or let our emotions take over ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. The police are on it, and I'm sure they'll do their best to figure out what happened.

It's also sad that there are people out there who think violence is the answer to their problems. Like, what even is that? ๐Ÿ˜ก Can't we all just get along and find a way to resolve our differences peacefully?

Anyway, my heart goes out to the families of the victims and everyone affected by this tragedy ๐Ÿ’”. Let's hope that justice is served soon and that this community can heal and move forward ๐ŸŒˆ.

Ugh, this is just terrible ๐Ÿค•... Can't believe a funeral turns into a deadly shooting outside a church. My thoughts are with the families of the victims ๐Ÿ˜”. It's crazy how quickly things escalate when there's tension between people... I mean, can't we all just get along? ๐Ÿ™

And honestly, who carries a gun to a funeral? That's just asking for trouble ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The police are doing their best to figure out what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again, but it's clear that this community is still reeling from the aftermath of the Michigan church shooting last month... We need some calm and unity here ๐Ÿ‘Œ.

I'm curious to know what kind of evidence the investigators find - license plate readers, surveillance videos, etc. Maybe they'll get lucky and catch a break ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Until then, let's all just hold each other's hands and hope for a peaceful resolution ๐Ÿ’–.

OMG this is literally so senseless ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, funerals are supposed to be a time for celebrating lives, not getting shot at! It's like, what's going on in people's heads? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ The fact that there was an argument over something that escalated into gunfire is just crazy talk. And now the community is living in fear because of some random shooting ๐Ÿšจ I feel so bad for those who lost loved ones and their families are still reeling from it ๐Ÿ’” Can't we all just get along? ๐Ÿ˜•

man... this is so heartbreaking ๐Ÿค• its crazy how things can escalate from an argument to a whole shooting incident outside a church where people are just tryin to pay their respects to loved ones family ๐Ÿ‘ช and the police dont think its random or anything but i feel like they should be lookin deeper cuz the FBI found out that guy who shot up a michigan church was motivated by anti-religious beliefs ๐Ÿคฏ what if this was some kinda copycat thing?

I'm still shaking my head over this one ๐Ÿคฏ. It's just so senseless. These two people were at a funeral for someone who has passed away, trying to say their final goodbyes... and it turns out some random argument breaks out and leads to gunshots? What is going on with our society these days? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ The fact that the church itself had to deal with this outside their doors just makes it even more heartbreaking. I mean, we all know that funerals are supposed to be a time for comfort and peace... not for violence.

I'm also curious about what's being done to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future ๐Ÿค”. Are law enforcement agencies taking enough steps to address the root causes of these types of incidents? Or is it just a case-by-case solution? I'd love to see some more concrete changes that would help keep our communities safer. Fingers crossed they find out what happened and bring justice to the victims' families ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’•

man this just broke my heart ๐Ÿค• its like the whole city is shook right now you got people running around with guns in the middle of a funeral what does that even say about us as a society? we should be able to show respect for each other no matter what our differences are and yet here we are seeing gun violence at its worst outside a church where people go to celebrate life

i dont think anyone is buying into the whole random thing either police got this all wrong from day one theyre trying to sweep it under the rug but the community knows whats really going on here

the funerals and churches are not some safe haven for us we should be able to trust our law enforcement agencies to keep us safe instead of having to live in fear of these kinds of incidents

๐Ÿ˜ž this kinda thing is just heartbreaking what's going on with people these days, can't we all just get along? it's a shame that something like this has to happen at a place where ppl r supposed to be celebrating life... ๐Ÿ™

anyway, i think the key here is to not jump to conclusions about the motives behind the shooting. i mean, it's clear that the shooter was armed and had some serious issues with people who knew each other. but let's not assume it was because of the church itself, 'cause that would be unfair ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

i'm all for law enforcement to do their job and figure out what really went down here... and i hope that the community can come together to support the victims' families and process this tragedy ๐Ÿ’”

one thing thats got me thinking is how we can prevent these kinda incidents from happening in the future... like, how can we promote more understanding and respect for each other's differences? ๐Ÿค
