LIVE: Officer did nothing until it was too late during Uvalde school shooting, prosecutor says

A Texas school police officer waited outside as children died inside, refusing to act until it was too late.

Adrian Gonzales, the first officer on the scene in 2022, did not try to distract or stop the gunman before he opened fire inside Robb Elementary's classrooms. He only went inside minutes later when the damage had already been done, prosecutor Bill Turner said during opening statements of a trial.

Prosecutors have focused on Gonzales' actions and claimed that as first responders arrived, hundreds of local, state, and federal officers waited more than an hour to confront the gunman.

Gonzales has pleaded not guilty in the case against him, which is rare for charges being brought against an officer who is accused of failing to act during a school shooting. His defense attorneys disputed accusations that he did nothing at the chaotic scene, saying Gonzales helped evacuate children as other police arrived.

The government accuses Gonzales of child abandonment or endangerment, with prosecutors claiming he had extensive active shooter training but chose not to act. Defense attorneys say their client did what he could, given the circumstances.

Velma Lisa Duran, sister of teacher Irma Garcia who was among the 19 students and two teachers killed in the attack, said that authorities waited over three years ago while her sister "died protecting children."

Prosecutors will have to show more than emotions to secure a conviction. Juries are often reluctant to convict law enforcement officers for failing to act, as seen after the Parkland school massacre in 2018.

Ugh, I'm still trying to process this 🤯... it's like, what is going on with these police officers? Are they really that trained or do they just need a refresher course? I mean, if someone's training includes active shooter scenarios, shouldn't they know how to act when their back is against the wall? 💥

I'm all for giving them a chance to defend themselves, but this guy waited like an hour to go inside and try to save those kids? That's just crazy talk 🚨. And now we're at trial, trying to figure out what his role was in it all... did he really help evacuate the kids as others arrived or is that just a cop-out tactic? 🤔

It's gonna be tough to secure a conviction here, I think... juries tend to have an "I know a cop" bias and they're rarely willing to convict their own 🙅‍♂️. But still, we need to get some accountability for people like this - it's just not right that kids died while waiting for someone to act 🚫.

🤕 This is some messed up stuff. Can't believe an officer was just chillin' outside while kids were gettin' shot up inside... I mean what's that all about? And now they're tryna convict him for not actin' fast enough 🚔😬. But like, we gotta see the tape and hear from witnesses before we start pointin' fingers. Can't let emotions rule this case...

Can't believe this is still happening 🤯. A cop just chillin' outside while kids get slaughtered inside? What kind of training does that require? I mean, come on! You're a public servant, not some bystander. We need to hold our law enforcement accountable for their actions (and inactions). This is why we need more transparency and oversight, especially when it comes to police procedures during emergencies. Three years is way too long to wait for someone to act, especially when lives are on the line. It's heartbreaking to think about Irma Garcia, Velma's sister, who died protecting those kids. We need real change, not just empty promises 🙏💪

Ugh I'm still shook thinking about this... the fact that Adrian Gonzales just stood outside waiting for something to happen is literally haunting me 🤕. I get that he's been trained on active shooter protocols and all that, but come on! You'd think with all those other officers showing up it would've been a no-brainer to rush in. And to think his defense team is trying to say he helped evacuate kids? That just doesn't sit right with me... I mean, if you're not gonna act then why bother being there at all? 🤔

I'M SO SAD ABOUT THIS STORY!!! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT THAT OFFICER GONZALES WAITED OUTSIDE FOR MINUTES BEFORE GOING INSIDE TO HELP THE KIDS!!! I MEAN, YOU'D THINK HE'D BE TRYING TO SAVE AS MANY LIVES AS POSSIBLE IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT! IT'S NOT ABOUT BEING A HERO OR NOT, IT'S JUST BASIC HUMANITY TO PUT YOURSELF IN HARM'S WAY IF SOMEONE NEEDS HELP!!! THE FACT THAT HE WAITED OVER AN HOUR BEFORE ACTING IS JUST CRAZY AND I DON'T KNOW HOW HE CAN LIVE WITH HIMSELF!!! 🤕😱

This is just heartbreaking 🤕. Can you imagine waiting outside while innocent kids are getting slaughtered inside? It's like they were just spectators instead of first responders. I don't think any cop would want that on their conscience... or should I say, if there was a way to escape it without going through a trial 😬. The defense is saying he did what he could under the circumstances, but what about those 19 kids? We can't just blame it on the training or the time it took for other officers to arrive... something needs to change 🚨. I'm not sure if this guy will get convicted, but one thing's for sure, his actions have ruined lives 💔.
