Lake District theatre to be renamed after Victoria Wood and unveil new musical of her songs

A Theatre Fit for a Legend: Lake District Venue to be Renamed After Victoria Wood

The Old Laundry theatre in Bowness-on-Windermere is set to undergo a name change as its owners pay tribute to the late comedian and playwright, Victoria Wood. As of next year, the venue will become the Victoria Wood theatre, a fitting nod to her enduring legacy.

Friends and trustees of the theatre, Charlotte Scott and Roger Glossop, are behind the renaming, which comes ahead of the 10th anniversary of Wood's passing in 2016. The couple worked with Wood on several projects, including the premiere of her play Talent at the Sheffield Crucible in 1978, a production that marked the beginning of their long-standing friendship.

The theatre has already played host to adaptations of some of Wood's most beloved works, including an adaptation of her TV drama Housewife 49 and an event featuring numbers from her song collection Lucky Bag. In 2013, it staged a production based on her own life story.

Next year, the Victoria Wood theatre will unveil a brand new musical, Fourteen Again, which features songs from Lucky Bag and was written by Tom MacRae, the creator of Everybody's Talking About Jamie. The show marks the first major production at the theatre since its name change and promises to be a celebration of Wood's life and work.

The Victoria Wood theatre will also stage a gala performance on what would have been her 62nd birthday in May. This anniversary date has been chosen as part of the theatre's efforts to mark the decade since Wood's passing, which falls next year.

With its unique history and connection to one of Britain's most beloved comedians, the Victoria Wood theatre is set to become a must-visit destination for fans of comedy and drama alike. As one of only a handful of playhouses named after a female creative, it promises to be a fitting tribute to a woman who continues to inspire and entertain audiences to this day.

I'm so down for that new musical Fourteen Again 🎤 can't wait to see what they come up with. Also, that gala performance on what would've been her birthday is such a nice touch 💕 it's like they're keeping her memory alive. Not sure how I feel about the name change though... feels kinda weird saying "theatre" after "Vic Wood" 🤔

😊 just thinking about Victoria Wood's legacy makes me wanna go back in time and watch some of her old shows all over again 📺 she was more than just a comedian, she was a true artist 🎭 I love how the theatre is gonna unveil a brand new musical featuring songs from Lucky Bag, it's gonna be so much fun to see how they bring her story to life on stage 🤩 and can you imagine performing at a venue named after one of your own heroes? 😍 that's what makes this name change so special 🎉

I'm still in awe that such an amazing theatre is being renamed after the incredibly talented Victoria Wood 🙌. I mean, can you imagine how much joy and laughter she brought to so many people through her comedy and plays? It's a lovely gesture by the owners of the Old Laundry theatre to pay tribute to her legacy. I've heard great things about the new musical that's coming up - Fourteen Again sounds like it's going to be fantastic! 🎭

I gotta say, renaming a theatre after Victoria Wood is a pretty cool idea 🤩... but let's be real, it's also a bit of a nostalgia trip for me - growing up in the 80s, her comedy just wasn't really my scene 😐. Still, I can appreciate the impact she had on people's lives and the fact that her work still resonates today.

I'm excited to see what kind of productions they'll be staging at the Victoria Wood theatre, especially with this new musical "Fourteen Again" 🎵... but I do worry about the whole 'preserving her legacy' thing. It's easy for us to gloss over the complexities and controversies that come with someone's life and work, especially if we're just paying tribute to them.

Still, it's all good vibes, right? 🤗 The fact that they're staging a gala performance on what would've been her birthday is a lovely touch. It's nice to see people still celebrating the woman behind the comedy legend 😊.
