How Big A Problem Is Tottenham Hotspur’s Midfield?

Tottenham Hotspur's midfield crisis is a pressing concern for manager Thomas Frank, with only four players having played more Premier League minutes than Portuguese international Joao Palhinha this season. The 30-year-old has been an instant impact, bringing much-needed steel to the defensive side of the ball, but his lack of natural ability as a progression of possession is hindering the team's performances.

The recent 2-2 draw against Manchester United highlighted the issues with Spurs' midfield pairing, with Palhinha and Pape Sarr struggling to create anything of note in front of goal. Despite having Wilson Odobert on the bench, who brought a different dimension with his dribbling skills, the midfield duo was too easy to mark.

Frank's decision to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig as a natural creator has been largely unsuccessful so far, as he is still adapting to life in the Premier League. The manager's reliance on injury-prone players like Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison adds further complexity to the midfield conundrum.

The bigger issue for Tottenham is that it lacks a supply line to progress the ball to a number 10 player, which is essential for making an impact on the top end of the Premier League. The January transfer window could be a turning point in Frank's assessment of his midfield options, with Spurs potentially targeting a deep-lying pace-setter to address this deficiency.

If a suitable replacement can be found, Spurs could make genuine progress and climb even higher in the table. For now, however, the absence of a natural progression of possession in the midfield remains a major concern for Frank's team.

omg i feel like spurs are having midseason blues all over again 🤦‍♂️ remember when we were struggling to score goals last year? at least they're trying to solve the problem now, signing new players and all that... but i'm still worried they won't find the right fit 😩 what's with this reliance on injuries tho? it's like they're trying to keep things fresh by bringing in new players every few months 🔄 maybe that's just me being paranoid...

omg i feel like spurs are so close to breaking through they just need that one player to click into place 🤞🏼 esp with xavi simons still getting used to the pace of the premier league i think dejan kulusevski and james maddison's injury history is super concerning 🤕 anyways, a deep-lying playmaker would make all the difference in creating those chances for wilson odobert and others to shine ⚽🔥

I'm feeling like we're missing something fundamental here 🤔...it's not just about signing players to fix the midfield crisis, it's about rethinking our approach to football altogether. I mean, what is the point of having talented players if they can't work together in harmony? It's like trying to build a beautiful puzzle with broken pieces 😕. And let's be honest, we're living in an era where football has become more focused on individual brilliance rather than collective cohesion. But, at the same time, I think that's what makes the Premier League so exciting – the unpredictability of it all 🎯. So, do we need to find a 'natural creator' or a 'number 10 player'? Or is it about creating a more fluid system where players can adapt and thrive? It's a tough nut to crack, but that's what makes this debate so fascinating 🔥...

omg I feel like spurs are stuck in neutral mode rn they have all these talented players but can't seem to click with each other 🤯🔙 palhinha is doing his thing but it's not enough to carry the team on his back... they need a natural playmaker who can break up the oppositions defense and start some attacks 🔜 xavi simons just doesn't feel like he's fitting in yet... i'm hoping january might bring some fresh blood 🚀

omg i just watched man u vs spurs on sunday 🏀😂 what was up with all those red cards lol anyway back to this spurs stuff... i feel like they need someone who can link up play really well, you know, like a little glue that makes everything stick together 👍🏼 but it sounds like it's hard to find one of those guys, esp in the premier league 🤔 do u think xavi simons will turn out okay? i've been following him since he was with ajax, and now hes at rb leipzig 🤷‍♂️

I'm worried about Spurs' mid season overhaul... 🤔 They need someone who can break the deadlock, not just defend. Can't keep relying on one guy (Palhinha) to bail them out every time. Need someone with some real creativity, like a Xavi Simons who can set up others for scoring chances. Currently, they're stuck in neutral 🚗

I think Tottenham needs to just sell Joao Palhinha already 🤦‍♂️. I mean, sure he's been solid at defense and all that but his lack of creativity is killing them. They need someone who can actually make something happen in the middle of the pitch. All this fuss about Xavi Simons not being successful yet... dude, you're trying to fix a fundamental issue with your team's gameplay. Maybe instead of looking for a 'natural creator', they should just look for someone who can create problems for the other team? 🤔

Man, Tottenham's midfield is like a puzzle with no clear solution 😩🤔 They need someone who can bring that creativity to unlock defenses but without it, they're stuck in neutral. It's crazy how much pressure Joao Palhinha is under - the guy's been playing like a rock at the back but it's just not translating to anything upfront. Xavi Simons needs time to settle in and Dejan Kulusevski can't be reliable... 🤦‍♂️ They're missing that spark which makes you wonder if they'll ever break free from their mid-table blues 🚫💔

omg I'm so done with Tottenham's midfield lol 😂 they need to figure this out ASAP! it's like they're playing a different game than everyone else 🤯 palhinha is killing it but he needs someone who can actually create chances for him 💡 and what's up with frank's signing decisions? xavi simons seems like a promising player but he's still finding his feet ⚽️ meanwhile we have players sitting on the bench collecting dust 👎 wilson odobert is the real MVP right now 🤩 they need to bring in someone who can provide that '10' player I'm low-key hoping they sign some decent player in jan 🤞

🤔 The thing is, you need that 10th man to unlock defenses and create scoring chances... right? 🚪 And Spurs just don't have it. They're relying too much on the front three to do all the heavy lifting. It's like trying to build a house without a foundation – it's gonna come crashing down eventually 😬. Need someone who can control the tempo of the game, bring some creativity and vision to midfield... or else they'll be stuck in 4th place forever 💔

Umm... so I think Tottenham need a midfielder who's good at passing, but at the same time, they don't want to pass too much because that would mean their striker isn't scoring as many goals 🤯🏃‍♂️💭. Like, if you get it right, everything falls into place, but if not... oh man, I'm all confused now 😅. Maybe they should just stick with Palhinha and hope he gets better at dribbling? 🤔

I think its not all doom & gloom! I mean, Joao Palhinha has been solid, no doubt about it 😊. And lets be real, thats what Spurs needed - some defensive solidity. Its not like they were getting tormented by midfielders like they used to. But yeah, the other players arent doing their part. I mean, Xavi Simons is still adapting, and Dejan Kulusevski has been injury prone... that does sound like a problem 🤕. BUT, I think Frank's trying his best with what he's got, & Spurs have had some decent results recently too ⚽️. Thats all i can say!

I don’t usually comment but I think Spurs need to find someone who can control the tempo of the game, you know? Like a midfielder who can see a pass and make it happen, not just react to what’s happening on the pitch... 🤔💡 They've got some talented players like Palhinha but he's more of a destroyer than a creator. And with all the injuries they've had this season, it's been tough for them to find consistency in midfield. I think if they can get that one player who can dictate the pace of the game, they'll be a different team altogether... 👍🏻💪

OMG u guys Tottenham needs 2 bring in a deep-lying runner ASAP they cant just rely on Joao Palhinha 2 win games his pace & power is amazing but he needs someone 2 create chances 4 the front 3 🤔 Xavi Simons has been rubbish so far lol 😒 Dejan Kulusevski & James Maddison r injury prone its like Spurs dont know how 2 build a solid midfield 😂 they need a #10 or a playmaker to dictate the tempo of the game 🕺 any1 got a link 2 get the latest transfer rumors? 💬

I think it's awesome that Tottenham is taking a closer look at what they need to strengthen their midfield 🤔! The recent draw against Manchester United was super close, and I'm sure everyone's excited to see how the January transfer window shakes things up 💥. Adding a deep-lying pace-setter could make such a big difference in getting that supply line going to a number 10 player - it's like they're finally solving a puzzle 🎉! Of course, Xavi Simons is still finding his footing here, but I'm sure he'll find his groove soon 😊. The fans should be patient and supportive – Spurs will get there, they just need the right pieces in place 🔒!

🤔 I think Spurs need to sign someone who can actually create chances out of nothing, not just bring some defensive solidity... 😅 And this "natural creator" business is just that - it sounds like some marketing nonsense, doesn't it? 📝 Need something tangible and not just promises. 👀

I think Spurs need to rethink their approach to midfield, you know? They're stuck on these slow-paced teams that just park the bus and hope their defenders can make something happen. Meanwhile, top teams like Liverpool are pushing the ball around, creating chances left and right. Tottenham needs someone who can bring that energy, that pace, and those creative skills. It's not just about finding a deep-lying playmaker, it's about getting someone who can actually dictate the tempo of the game. And let's be real, Xavi Simons just doesn't cut it yet... 😐

I'm getting old, remember when we used to watch Spurs play with Glenn Hoddle as their creative force? Now they're struggling to create anything, it's like they lost that magic. I don't know what happened, but it feels like they've got the right players in there, it's just not clicking. I mean, Palhinha is doing alright, but you need someone who can pick out a pass and get the team moving forward. Xavi Simons is still finding his feet, that's understandable, but Dejan Kulusevski has been injured like three times already this season... what's going on? 🤔

I'm not saying they should just go out and buy anyone, but Spurs need to figure out how to get the ball forward without relying on someone like Wilson Odobert to do it all. It feels like they're trying too hard to fix the midfield with one transfer, whereas maybe they need a more gradual approach. January could be a good chance for them to sort this out, fingers crossed! 🤞
