Houston Food Bank Seeks Volunteers to Help Those in Need This Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, a critical need has emerged for volunteers at the Houston Food Bank. The organization is calling on individuals to answer phones and register eligible families to receive essential food boxes. With long wait times reported during this time of year, the demand for these services has never been more pressing.

Volunteers are needed to join the ABC13 Share Your Holidays phone bank, which will be operating from Monday, December 1 through Wednesday, December 3. No prior experience is necessary, and a brief training session will be provided before each shift. Volunteers will receive a comprehensive binder with information on the programs they will be working with.

The Houston Food Bank has an urgent need for Spanish speakers to volunteer, as many of their clients rely heavily on these services to access essential resources. By joining this effort, volunteers can make a tangible difference in the lives of their neighbors and help ensure that everyone has access to the food and support they need.

To sign up, create a volunteer profile and look for red shifts on the Houston Food Bank website. The organization is also accepting donations online or by texting SYH2025 to 71777, with all funds going towards supporting their most pressing programs.

I'm not really sure why people are always complaining about the Houston Food Bank doing this kind of thing... I mean, can't they see how selfless it is? 🤗 They're just trying to help people in need, and now they're getting a lot of flak because some folks don't have time to volunteer. Is it really fair to just focus on this one week? You know what's crazy about holidays? I was at my cousin's house last year during Christmas and they had this amazing spread of food... and I'm not even a big fan of turkey 🤔. But what really caught me off guard was when we started talking about food waste. Like, have you ever thought about how much food goes to waste just because it's past its expiration date? My cousin was like, "Yeah, we always end up giving it away because it's still edible." And I was like, "But why not freeze it or share it with someone who needs it?" It got me thinking... maybe that's what the Houston Food Bank is trying to do, but on a much bigger scale 🤝.
 
I'm so frustrated when I hear that people are having to wait in long lines for food 🤯 it's just not right. If we can get more volunteers to help out at the Houston Food Bank, it would make such a big difference 💖. And you know what really gets me? They're short on Spanish speakers - that's like, half of our community doesn't speak English, so how are they supposed to access these resources if there aren't enough people who can talk to them in their own language? 🤷‍♀️ I wish more people would just step up and help out.
