Franc, Canterbury, Kent: 'Just great, great cooking' – restaurant review | Grace Dent on restaurants

Canterbury's newest sensation is Franc, a stylish neighbourhood restaurant from the brainchild of chefs Dave Hart and Polly Pleasance - the pair behind the renowned Folkestone Wine Company. Hart has garnered widespread acclaim for his culinary prowess, most notably during their previous venture where they showcased incredible French-leaning dishes.

One evening I had the pleasure of dining at Franc upstairs in a higgledy-piggledy room featuring just 26 seats and mismatched crockery. The wine bar downstairs offers a slightly reduced capacity menu with dishes such as _fromage de tête_ with cornichons and roast lamb with flageolet beans.

The set lunch menu was, however, the real star of the show - it offered an array of delicious dishes including slices of fried duck breast served with caramelised chicory, vast homemade chips, and a beautifully dressed salad that epitomized simplicity and excellence in French cuisine.

A visit to Franc would be a rare treat for anyone fortunate enough to dine at this beautiful neighbourhood restaurant.

omg u guys i just found the most amazing restaurant in canterbury!!! franc is literally the coziest spot ever, i felt like i was in a french bistro or something 🍽️🇫🇷 their set lunch menu is TO DIE FOR, i mean who wouldn't love fried duck breast with caramelised chicory and homemade chips? 🤤 and don't even get me started on the wine bar downstairs, it's like they're speaking my language already 😋 gotta add franc to my list of fave restaurants ASAP! 👍

I'm kinda loving the whole 'hidden gem' vibe of Franc 🍴👌 Their menu sounds like a love letter to French cuisine, and I mean that in the best way possible 😊. I'm all about those nostalgic feels when it comes to food, you know? There's just something special about revisiting classic dishes with a modern twist.

But what really got me is how they balanced simplicity and excellence on their set lunch menu 🤩. It's like they took all the fuss out of fine dining and just let the food speak for itself. And that fried duck breast with caramelised chicory? Game. Changer. 👌

Omg I'm literally drooling over here 🤯 Franc sounds like an absolute dream come true! 26 seats in a higgledy-piggledy room? that's so intimate and cozy 😍. And the fact that they have those fancy wine bars downstairs is just the icing on the cake 🍰. The menu sounds SO on point, especially that caramelised chicory with fried duck breast... I need to get myself there ASAP! 👉 who else has tried Franc yet?

🍴 I went to Franc last week and let me tell you it was an eye-opener! What really stood out to me was how the chefs used simplicity to elevate their dishes - that salad was a masterclass in allowing each ingredient to shine, no fuss needed 🌿. It made me think about how we can sometimes overcomplicate things in life. I've been there too, where I overthink something and it just becomes a mess 😬. But Franc showed me that sometimes less is more.

Franc is kinda underrated imo 🤷‍♂️ they've got an amazing vibe going on downstairs at the wine bar, but honestly can't wait to try their set lunch menu out – fried duck breast sounds insane 🍗👌 26 seats or not, the higgledy-piggledy room has character 😊 gotta love the mismatched crockery too lol 💕

ooh i know right? 🤩 i went to folkestone wine co last year and it was amazing!!! 🍷👌 franc sounds like a dreamy spot too, that set lunch menu sounds soooo good! 😋 especially the fried duck breast with caramelised chicory... mmmmmm. i love when restaurants do simplicity right, it's like they're saying "hey, we trust our food" 💯

I've been dying to try out Franc after seeing all the buzz online 🤩. I'm so glad to hear their food is still on point, especially that set lunch menu sounds amazin'! The idea of fried duck breast with caramelised chicory and homemade chips is makin' me hungry just thinkin' about it 😋. And that they're doin' the French cuisine justice? That's music to my ears 🎵. Have you tried their wine bar downstairs too? I'm defo gonna check it out and grab a bite (or two, or three...) 🍴👌

Franc is the perfect example of how government policies on sustainable food can lead to innovation like this! I mean, think about it - Dave Hart and Polly Pleasance were inspired by French cuisine, but they put their own spin on it, resulting in something unique and delicious. It's almost as if the government's support for local farmers and producers (e.g., through initiatives like the 'Farmers' Market Boost') has created a ripple effect, encouraging chefs to get creative with their ingredients. And let's not forget about the environmental impact of reducing food waste by using every part of an animal (as seen in the _fromage de tête_ dish). It's a win-win for both the environment and our taste buds! 🌿🍴

I think 26 seats is kinda crazy small 😅. I mean, I got there and the vibe was so cozy, but if you're gonna sit downstairs, you should at least have like 50 people in the wine bar area 🤔. And what's up with mismatched crockery? It looked like a thrift store or something 🛍️. Don't get me wrong, the food was insane... I mean, who doesn't love fried duck breast and caramelized chicory on their plate? 🤤 But 26 seats just seems so... exclusive? Like, you're not even gonna have to wait in line for a table or anything... that's just weird.
