Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin has conceded defeat in Sunday's parliamentary election, handing over power to the opposition National Coalition Party (NCP). Marin, who is just 37 years old and considered a millennial role model for progressive leaders worldwide, had been the world's youngest prime minister since taking office in 2019.

The NCP secured a majority of seats in parliament with 48 seats, narrowly ahead of the nationalist Finns Party, which won 46 seats. Marin's Social Democrats took 43 seats, according to election data.

In her concession speech, Marin acknowledged that the opposition party had received more support and gained more seats than her own party. She praised her team for their hard work and dedication, but admitted that the NCP had won the most votes in a tightly contested contest.

NCP leader Petteri Orpo vowed to "fix Finland" and its economy, promising austerity measures to curb deficit spending. He will have the first chance at forming a coalition government with a majority in parliament, which Marin's Social Democrats may join but not the Finns Party, whom Marin has described as "openly racist".

Orpo's speech was seen as a victory speech, where he expressed his party's commitment to reducing immigration from developing countries outside the European Union and cutting public debt. The NCP's policy aims were similar to those of the Social Democrats under Marin's leadership.

Finland's foreign policy priorities have been a key aspect of Marin's tenure, particularly her push for NATO membership following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The accession process is now almost complete, with Helsinki expected to join the Western defense alliance within days after all 30 member countries approved the move.

Marin has been a popular leader among many Finns, particularly young moderates, but her government was criticized by conservatives for lavish spending on pensions and education.

🤣 I mean, Sanna Marin is like the ultimate millennial crush, right? But it looks like she got "rebooted" by the opposition 😂. I'm not surprised though, Finns are known to be brutal in their elections. On a serious note, Petteri Orpo's speech was pretty fire 🔥, I mean who doesn't love austerity measures and cutting public debt? Sounds like a real party starter 🎉. And let's be real, Marin's Social Democrats got played by the Finns Party – I guess you could say they were "outed" as being open to immigration 🤷‍♀️. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how Orpo's government shakes out, but hey at least Helsinki will finally join NATO and feel safer 😊. Now if only Finland's politicians spent less time talking and more time budgeting 🤑... just kidding (or am I?) 😉

I'm shocked that Sanna Marin lost the election 🤯. I've always looked up to her as a role model for progressive leadership 🙏. She was so young when she took office and had done such a great job, especially with Finland joining NATO 🇫🇮. But it's not surprising that the opposition party won more seats in parliament - they did seem to have some pretty radical ideas about reducing immigration and cutting public debt 💸.

I'm still trying to understand why Marin was so critical of the Finns Party though 😕. I've heard they're not exactly known for their inclusive policies 🤷‍♀️. Anyway, I hope Sanna finds it easy to step down as PM and that she can stay involved in politics if she wants to 👍. She's clearly still got a lot to offer 💡.

OMG did u see that? Sanna Marin just got dethroned by Petteri Orpo 🤯 I mean, I get it, NCP won more seats and all, but 37 and she's already gone 💔 what's up with that? And btw, the whole "fix Finland" speech was pretty suspicious to me... sounds like Orpo's just gonna keep on repeating the same old right-wing policies 😒

🤔 Finland's youth vote seems to have gone against Sanna Marin 🎉 But it's not all bad news! She's still got a lot of respect from the international community 💖 And let's be real, she's only 37 - that's like, ancient in politics years 😂 Anyway, I do hope Petteri Orpo can bring some positive change to Finland 🌞 He seems like he's promised some good stuff for the economy and all 🤑 But it'll be interesting to see how he balances that with keeping things inclusive for everyone 🤝 And honestly? The fact that Marin's party wasn't able to form a coalition is kinda like, a major win for Finland as a whole 🙌

omg can't believe sanna marin is out of office :( i mean she was so young and inspiring 🤯 like what's gonna happen to finland now? the ncp seems kinda serious about cutting public debt, but isn't that just another way of saying less government spending, which would probably affect pensions too? 🤑 anyway, it's interesting to see petteri orpo's focus on immigration and reducing deficit spending. does anyone think he'll actually be able to "fix finland" in the next 4 years tho? 😒

OMG 🤯 just saw that Sanna Marin conceded defeat 🙅‍♀️😱 she's literally 37 yrs old 😲 youngest PM in Europe 🌟 still got so much to give 💁‍♀️ can't believe the NCP won with only 1 more seat than her party 👀👊 Petteri Orpo thinks he can "fix Finland" lol what a load of BS 💸 like, austerity measures? that's just gonna hurt the poor and vulnerable 🤷‍♀️ at least Marin was all about NATO membership 🇫🇮💪 that's some real leadership 💖 and btw, no Finns Party means less openly racist vibes 👍😊 still gotta respect Orpo for his speech tho 😎

🤔 so sad to see sanna marin go she was like my ultimate role model as a millennial lol anyway i think its good that the opposition party won this time maybe they can bring some new ideas to finland's economy 🤑 but gotta say i'm a bit worried about petteri orpo's plans on immigration cuttin public debt and all that sounds kinda... conservative 😐 dont get me wrong i love finland too, but we gotta be careful with our policies 🤝 anyway congrats to the ncp and all 👍

the transition of power in finland is interesting 🤔... i think marin's concession speech showed she's a good sport about it 👏, acknowledging the opposition party's win while still praising her team's efforts 💪. but what's gonna happen to finland's economy now? austerity measures can be tough for people on low incomes ⚠️. and the fact that the ncp's leader petteri orpo is talking about reducing immigration from developing countries outside eu makes me wonder if we're headed towards a more divisive society 🌎... anyway, it'll be interesting to see how marin's social democrats fit into the new government 🤔💬

I'm kinda surprised that Sanna Marin lost 🤔. I mean, she's still super young and had some great policies going on, like pushing for NATO membership 😊. But I guess the Finns just didn't want more of her progressive vibes 💁‍♀️. The NCP's austerity measures might be a bit too harsh, though - don't they know that some deficit spending is necessary for growth? 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how Petteri Orpo does as PM 👀. Hopefully he doesn't follow through on his "openly racist" comments 😬...

🤔 Finland's election result is a bit of a wake-up call for me. I'm sad to see Sanna Marin lose power 🤕, she's been doing some amazing work as PM 🙌. The fact that the NCP won with fewer seats but more votes makes you wonder if Finns were craving change 💡.

I'm not sure about the austerity measures promised by Orpo though 🤑. Cutting public debt and reducing immigration might be good for the economy, but what about the young people like Marin who are all about progress? 💖 I hope her team will stay involved in politics 🤝. And I wonder if the NCP's policies on education and pensions are really gonna help Finland... 🤔

so the NCP got that majority seat thingy... I feel bad for Marin tho, she's still super young and had some great ideas 🤔💡, like NATO membership. I hope Orpo doesn't mess up too much with his austerity plans, Finland needs to keep being chill 😎 about immigration. What's up with the Finns Party being called openly racist though? That's just not cool 👎. Marin made it seem like a big deal to me, but maybe I'm just still in shock 🤯. Anyway, here's hoping Orpo doesn't make Finland too boring 😴.

🤔 I'm not surprised Sanna Marin conceded defeat, to be honest. The opposition party's message seemed more resonant with the general public this time around 📊. As a retiree, I've seen many elections come and go, but what caught my attention was how young Marin is - 37 years old! She's been in office since she was 34 😱. It's impressive to see her take on such a significant role at that age. Now, it'll be interesting to see how Petteri Orpo leads the country, especially with his promise of austerity measures 📈. As someone who's lived through economic ups and downs, I hope he finds a balance between reducing debt and investing in essential public services 💸. One thing's for sure, Finland's future is looking bright - and I'm curious to see how they navigate the challenges ahead 🤞

omg did u see that finland just changed gov? 🤯 sanna marin is so young and cool! i feel bad 4 her tho, she's only 37 and had to step down 😔 ncp got more seats tho, but marin said they won the most votes which makes me wonder if it was just a popularity contest 🤷‍♀️

anyway, petteri orpo's speech sounded kinda divisive - all about 'fixing' finland and reducing immigration 🚫 i hope he doesn't make things worse for immigrants 👥 marin seemed to agree w/ him on some issues tho? 🤔 also, did u see the bit about marin saying the finns party is 'openly racist'? that's like so serious 🙅‍♀️

i do think marin was a great leader tho - she pushed for nato membership and all 👍 now it's up to orpo to live up 2 her legacy 😬 can't wait 2 see how things play out in finland! 💸

man this is crazy how fast 37 feels like old age lol 🙃 so sanna marin went down in flames she's been the face of finland's progressive movement and now it seems like the national coalition party is taking over... i'm kinda surprised they didn't do better with their "openly racist" stance comment though that was super low 🤦‍♀️ anyway, petteri orpo is definitely someone to watch out for he's got a clear agenda on reducing immigration and cutting debt which might appeal to some folks but at what cost? finland's economy is already pretty vulnerable so can we really afford austerity measures without hurting the wrong people? i guess only time will tell 👀

omg did u hear about finland's pm sanna marin? she's literally super young & now theres someone new in power 😱 the ncp party won the majority seats 🤝 i think it's a good thing tho cuz they promised to fix finlands econ tho 💸 but i wish marin wasnt so hard on the finns party 🤔 anyway, its been interesting 2 see finland join nato 🌟 what do u guys think about this?
