Detroit’s enormous American flag vanishes day after its big reveal - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Record-Breaking American Flag Disappears After Just One Day

In a shocking turn of events, the massive American flag that was unveiled just a day ago at Detroit's Hudson's building has vanished due to the strong wind in the city. The 141-by-85-foot flag, which is believed to be the largest hanging U.S. flag in the country, was displayed over the new public plaza named after Dan and Jennifer Gilbert's late son.

According to a company spokeswoman, Bedrock removed the flag because of the wind, which has been moderate at around 10 to 20 mph in recent days. The average wind speed in November is about 8 mph, but the strong gusts have made it difficult for the massive banner to stay in place.

While the flag may be gone for now, its return is expected when the winds die down. It will be reinstalled over Woodward Avenue once the weather stabilizes.

The new flag is a tribute to a Detroit tradition that dates back to 1923, when the original J.L. Hudson's building unfurled what was then the largest American flag in the world. That one measured 230 feet long and 90 feet high and was displayed each year for Armistice Day, now known as Veterans Day.

The new version of the flag may be smaller than its predecessors, but it is still an impressive sight to behold. Once reinstalled, it will overlook Woodward Avenue and serve as a symbol of American pride in the city.

Detroiters can rest assured that their beloved holiday symbol will return when the weather improves. Until then, residents can look back on the flag's brief but memorable appearance as a reminder of the city's rich history and tradition.

I'm kinda surprised it only lasted one day... I mean, 10 to 20 mph winds seem pretty manageable for something that big 🤔. But at the same time, I can see how it would be hard to keep it up, especially considering its size. I'm just glad it wasn't torn or anything 😅. On a related note, I think the new flag is cool and all, but 141 by 85 feet might be a bit too big for Detroit's public plaza... maybe they could've gone with something smaller? 💡

man this is crazy lol the flag just disappeared like that? i'm shocked it was only up for one day 🤯😂 anyway its still gonna be back when the weather calms down so we can see it fly high again over woodward ave

I'm so bummed to hear that the massive American flag in Detroit got taken down already 🤕💔. I mean, it was only up for one day! But you know what? It's actually kinda cool that they took it down due to safety reasons 😊. I don't want anyone getting hurt by that big ol' flag blowing around in the wind 💨. And I love how it's part of Detroit's rich history - that 1923 flag was massive, just like this one! 🤯 It'll be back up when the weather calms down, and I'm sure it'll look even more stunning than before 💖.

I dont get why they had to take it down so fast lol 🤷‍♂️. I mean its been like 1 day only. But yeah i guess those strong winds in detroit can be pretty wild ⛈️. Its def a shame that its already gone but ill wait till the weather clears up before i get my pic taken with it 😊. The flag is actually kinda cool, and its nice to see them bringing back this tradition. I wish they had some way to secure it better tho 🤦‍♂️. Guess thats just part of living in detroit though, its all about being prepared for the weather ⚠️.

😐 Oh man, I'm kinda bummed that the giant American flag just disappeared after one day... 🤦‍♂️ I get it, safety first, right? But I also kinda love the flag and was looking forward to seeing it out in all its glory for a bit longer. It's still gonna be there when the weather calms down, though! 🌞 So, while I'm disappointed that it didn't last longer, I guess it's just another reminder that even big things can come and go... but Detroit will always have that awesome spirit of pride and tradition. 💪

Man, that's wild! I mean, the flag was up for like 24 hours and already it got taken down? 🤯 I get it, strong winds are no joke, especially in Detroit. But at the same time, isn't there something a bit symbolic about a giant flag blowing away? It's like the wind is literally taking back what it gave us - you know? Anyway, it'll probably come back up when the weather clears up, and I'm sure it'll be just as awesome as before 😊.

omg what a letdown 😔 that huge American flag was up for like 24 hours and already it's gone 🌪️ i mean its good they removed it to prevent any damage, but still it was so cool seeing it fly high above hudsons building 💨 anyway, it'll be back when the weather calms down, can't wait to see it again 🎉

OMG, I just saw this crazy news about the American flag in Detroit 😲! I mean, 141-by-85-foot is HUGE!!! 🤯 Can you even imagine having to remove that thing because of some wind? 💨 Like, I get it, safety first and all that, but still... what a shame it only lasted one day. 🙃 At least the new flag will be back up soon, I guess 😊. It's so cool that they're keeping the tradition going, though - 1923 was like, forever ago! ⏰ Still, I'm sure Detroiters are already counting down until the weather calms down and that beauty is back in its spot 🎉.

I dont get it... A record-breaking flag that's only up for like, 24 hours? Its all just a publicity stunt to me... Bedrock probably spent way more than necessary on design and installation, plus the environmental impact is still unknown 🤔. What's next? Giant flags in every neighborhood just for show?

can't believe it lasted just one day 🤯😂, I mean i know strong winds in detroit are no joke, but still it's sad to see such an iconic symbol like that disappear after its premiere event... maybe they should've checked the forecast before installing it or something? 🤔 on a more positive note, i do love how the new flag is a tribute to the city's rich history and the fact that detroiters can look back on it as a reminder of that is what matters most 🙏

I mean, can you believe it? A record-breaking American flag is gone already 🤦‍♂️. I think it's kinda sad that the winds took it down after just one day. It's like the flag didn't even get to show off its grandeur for a whole 24 hours 😔.

On the other hand, I'm glad Bedrock decided to remove it before anything bad happened. Safety first, right? 🙏 But at the same time, it feels like the excitement and hype around the new flag are already fading away ⏱️.

I guess that's just how things go sometimes – we get excited for something new, but then it's gone all too soon 💔. Still, I'm sure the city will be thrilled to have it back up again when the weather improves 🌞.

Ugh, I'm still fumin' about that massive American flag at Hudson's buildin'. I mean, it was just up there for ONE DAY?! 🤯 Can you even imagine the wind in Detroit bein' strong enough to take down a 141-by-85-foot flag? 😂 It's like, yeah, okay, Bedrock, we get it. The winds are strong. But can't they just, like, use some stronger anchor thingies or somethin'? 🤔

And I don't even wanna talk about how much it cost to put that thing up there in the first place! 💸 A million bucks, easy. And now it's just... gone? 😐 It's like, what's the point of even havin' a record-breaking flag if it's just gonna get blown away by a little wind? 🤷‍♂️

I guess they'll try to reinstall it when the weather gets better, and I'm sure it'll look pretty sweet sittin' there over Woodward Avenue. But for now, I'm just gonna sit here and think about how much that flag cost us in terms of pride and disappointment 😔.

.. I just can't believe that thing was up for like 24 hours 🤯. I mean, I get it, strong winds in Detroit, but still... that thing was massive 😂. And yeah, I'm feeling nostalgic about this whole thing - J.L. Hudson's building is a piece of history, and to see the American flag flying high again is kinda cool 💕. But at the same time, can you imagine having to deal with all those gusts? I wouldn't wanna be on the team that had to take it down 😅. And now that it's gone, I'm guessing people are gonna freak out when it comes back up... like, what if the winds are even stronger this time? 🤔 Still, it'll be awesome to see it flying high again, and I love how they're keeping the tradition going 💪.

I'm not buying it 🤔🎪. A record-breaking 141-by-85-foot American flag just disappears after one day because of some moderate winds? Come on! 🌬️ It sounds like they were expecting this to happen all along, maybe even wanted it to happen so they could say "look at us we're brave for putting up a giant flag in the wind" 😒. And what's with the fancy new plaza and the big deal about it being named after some guy's kid? 🤷‍♂️ It just feels like another example of corporate America trying to cash in on patriotism without actually doing anything meaningful 💸.

omg u guys i was literally just at detroit yesterday 🤯🇺🇸 and i couldn't even believe my eyes when i saw that massive american flag waving above hudson's building lol it was so cool but also kinda windy 💨 i didn't think it would come down after like 12 hours or whatever 🤷‍♀️ but i guess the city ppl did the right thing by taking it down cuz i bet it would've gotten all torn and stuff 😂 anyway gotta say i'm def gonna miss seeing that flag waving high above Woodward Ave tho 🌆 it's such a cool tribute to detroit's history and all 💕
