Democrat Tom Malinowski concedes to Analilia Mejia in primary for N.J. Gov. Mikie Sherrill's former House seat

Democrat Tom Malinowski concedes to Analilia Mejia in primary for N.J. Gov. Mikie Sherrill's former House seat.

In a surprise turn of events, former Rep. Tom Malinowski has conceded the New Jersey special election to fill Governor Mikie Sherrill's congressional seat to Analilia Mejia. The two candidates were neck-and-neck throughout the campaign, with Mejia ultimately emerging as the winner.

Mejia, who previously worked for Senator Bernie Sanders during his 2020 presidential bid and was endorsed by both Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is expected to host a news conference later today with supporters. "I congratulate Analilia Mejia on her hard-won victory in the NJ-11 special primary," Malinowski said in his concession speech. "I look forward to supporting her in the April general election."

The Democratic primary for the 11th Congressional District was highly competitive, with a field of 11 candidates vying for the nomination. Mejia will now face Republican candidate Joe Hathaway, the mayor of Randolph, on April 16.

Several high-profile Democrats have expressed their support for Mejia, including Senator Cory Booker and Rep. Adriano Espaillat. "The people spoke—and they moved the ground beneath our politics," Espaillat said, calling Mejia a "proven progressive who has done the work."

Mejia's victory is seen as a significant win for progressive Democrats in the state, and she will be looking to build on this momentum in the general election.

idk howAnalilia Mejia managed to pull off that win tho 🤔. I mean, it was super close with Tom Malinowski and all. but i guess her Sanders/Ocasio-Cortez endorsement deal went a long way 💸. the fact that Cory Booker and Adriano Espaillat were both down with her is also telling - must've been some serious street cred 🤑. anyway, it's gonna be interesting to see how she holds up in the general election against Joe Hathaway... 🤞

Ugh man... just got out of bed and already feeling meh about politics 🤔📊. Another NJ primary and it's all just more of the same - divide and conquer 🤯. I mean, Democrat vs Democrat, who cares? It's not like it's gonna make a difference in the grand scheme of things... just another special election that'll probably end up being wasted on some Republican candidate anyway 😒. And now Analilia Mejia's got to deal with the expectations of all these big-name Dems supporting her 🤝... what if she can't even live up to it? Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this plays out... not holding my breath 🙅‍♂️.

omg u guys, did u see that analysis of tom malinowski's concession speech? i think he did a great job of giving credit to analilia mejia and setting up his support for her in the general election 💯📰. but let's be real, his speech was kinda... lacking when it came to visuals 🤔. where were those nice graphics they showed during the campaign? 📺👀 i mean, a concession speech is as much about aesthetics as it is about substance 🎥. and can we talk about the font choices? 😒 "i look forward to supporting her in the april general election" is just so bland 🤮. where's the personality? 🤷‍♀️

can't believe this turn of events! 😮 Analilia Mejia was literally invisible until now, but her grassroots campaign totally paid off 🙌. I mean, I had my doubts about her at first, but after hearing that Sen Booker & Rep Espaillat endorsed her... I knew she was legit 💯. Now she's got the momentum on her side - let's see how it all plays out in April 🤞. The question is, can she keep it going?

🤔 so i was expecting malinowski to take it by a hair, but Mejia really pulled off an upset. gotta give her props, she's got some serious name-dropping cred with sanders & ocasio-cortez backing her up 🙌. and now that she'll be facing joe hathaway in the gen election, i'm curious to see how she'll stack up against him... think she might have a chance? 🤷‍♀️

omg I just saw that news 🤯 so Analilia Mejia won the primary and stuff? like how did that happen? didn't expect it at all 😮 her campaign was really something though, right? and yeah what's up with Joe Hathaway tho? mayor of Randolph or whatever... 💁‍♀️ anyway guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens in the general election 🤔

😊 I'm not surprised about Tom Malinowski conceding to Analilia Mejia... we've seen how quickly voters can swing their support from one candidate to another if they feel someone's not doing what they promised.

As a retiree, I've had time to watch a lot of politicians come and go, and I gotta say, it's refreshing to see someone like Mejia who seems genuinely committed to progressive values. It's also heartening to see so many big-name Democrats backing her - that tells me she's got the chops.

Now, let's hope Analilia Mejia doesn't get too caught up in the hype and loses sight of what matters most: listening to the people and doing what's best for New Jersey. 🤞

omg what a crazy primary 😱 i was really rooting for Tom Malinowski but Analilia Mejia has been gaining traction since day one... her team did an amazing job of building up momentum with all those big name Dem endorsements 🤝 like Ocasio-Cortez and Booker - it's no surprise she took the win. can't wait to see how this plays out in the general election tho, Joe Hathaway is gonna give her a run for her money 💪
