Canada loses its official "measles-free" status. The US will soon follow

Canada is on the brink of losing its "measles-free" status, a title it held for over two decades. The country's vaccination rates have plummeted, leaving thousands of people vulnerable to the highly contagious disease.

According to the Pan American Health Organization, Canada's measles-free designation was revoked after a year of sustained outbreaks. The US is also at risk of losing its measles-free status, with both countries experiencing large and widespread outbreaks in recent months.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases on the planet, with the potential to spread rapidly through unvaccinated populations. Despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine, nearly 2 million children still die from measles each year, mostly in low-income countries where access to vaccination is limited.

Canada's decline began with a sharp drop in childhood vaccination rates, from 90% in 2019 to just 82% in 2022. As the number of unvaccinated people grew, so did the risk of outbreaks. In 2024, Canada reported over 100 cases of measles, and by 2025, that number had skyrocketed to over 5,000.

The situation is not unique to Canada; the US has also seen a surge in measles cases, with more than 1,600 people infected across 40 states. The outbreaks are largely driven by low vaccination rates, with fewer than 10% of those who contracted the disease having received the measles vaccine.

The loss of measles-free status is a symptom of a deeper issue: declining trust in public health messaging and decreasing vaccination rates. Without significant improvements in vaccination coverage and public trust, many countries face an increased risk of more and bigger outbreaks of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases in the coming years.

As global health epidemiologist Kathryn H. Jacobsen notes, the resurgence of measles is a warning sign for the broader impact of declining vaccination rates on public health. It highlights the need for renewed efforts to promote vaccination and build trust in community health measures.

I'm so confused about this whole thing... ๐Ÿค” I mean, I've always thought that getting vaccinated was like, super important and stuff, but now I'm not so sure? Like, why did Canada's rates drop from 90% to 82% if vaccines are safe and effective? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

And what's with the US too? If they're experiencing huge outbreaks, shouldn't they be doing better than Canada? It's like, we're all supposed to be looking out for each other here... ๐Ÿ’• But I guess that's just not happening.

I'm also kinda worried about those 2 million kids who die from measles every year. That's, like, a lot of people... ๐Ÿ˜ฉ And it makes me wonder if vaccines really are as effective as we think? ๐Ÿค”

But at the same time, I don't want to be one of those people who's against vaccination or anything... that sounds super irresponsible and stuff... ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ So yeah, I guess I'm just all over the place on this one... ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿค” I think this is super concerning... we're seeing a huge drop in vaccination rates in Canada, which is shocking given how long they'd had their "measles-free" status. It's not just about the measles, though - if we're losing trust in public health and vaccines, what other diseases are going to be a problem? ๐Ÿค• The stats are crazy, like 5k cases in Canada alone this year... that's insane! ๐Ÿšจ And it's not just Canada or the US, either - if we don't get our act together, I worry about what'll happen globally. We need to figure out why people are hesitant to get vaccinated and find ways to fix it before things spiral out of control. ๐Ÿ’ก

man this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ canada's vaccine rates are like super low now it's no wonder they lost their "measles-free" status, i mean its not just canada tho, us too got hit hard with all these outbreaks. measles is like the worst, so contagious and whatnot. 2 million kids dying every year from it is insane. and its not just canada or us, theres plenty of other countries where access to vaccines is super limited. we gotta get our act together on vaccination rates ASAP ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I don't usually comment but... it's really worrying to see Canada losing its "measles-free" status ๐Ÿค•. I mean, we're talking about a country that used to be super on top of vaccination rates, and now it's like a ticking time bomb ๐Ÿ’ฅ. The stats are crazy - 5,000 cases in one year? That's insane! ๐Ÿคฏ And it's not just Canada, the US is struggling too. What's going on with people getting vaccinated? We need to figure out why vaccine hesitancy is so high and how we can get more people to roll up their sleeves ๐Ÿ™. It's not just about measles, either - what happens when other diseases start making a comeback? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

๐Ÿค• the thing that really gets me is how we've been conditioned to believe that our personal freedoms are more important than the greater good ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ like, I get it, there's a time and place for choice, but when it comes to something as preventable and effective as vaccination, I think we need to take a step back and think about all the people who might be hurt if we don't do our part ๐Ÿค. measles is literally just one example of what can happen when we let our guard down and ignore public health advice ๐Ÿšจ. it's not just about being vaccinated, it's about being responsible members of society ๐Ÿ‘ฅ.

๐Ÿค• meh, it's like we're regressing as a society ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, 90% vaccine rate in 2019 was already kinda low, but now it's like 82% ๐Ÿ“‰? what happened to all the parents who used to get their kids vaccinated on time? and now we're seeing 5k+ cases of measles in Canada alone ๐Ÿ˜จ... it's scary to think about how quickly this can spread. and yeah, it's not just Canada or the US, other countries are experiencing similar outbreaks too ๐ŸŒŽ. I guess what I'm saying is that if you don't have your kids vaccinated, you're basically letting them be a petri dish for diseases ๐Ÿ˜ท... gotta do better than that as a society ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿค• This is really worrying... I mean, we've seen the stats and it's just mind-boggling that thousands of people are at risk because some folks aren't getting vaccinated ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. And yeah, I get what they're saying about trust in public health messaging being a thing but can't we find a way to address that too? ๐Ÿ™ It's not like the vaccine isn't safe or effective - it's just about people being informed and making informed choices ๐Ÿค“. We need to get people on board with vaccination, ASAP ๐Ÿ’ช!

๐Ÿค• the thing that's really worrying me about this whole situation is how the decline in vaccine rates has become such a big deal. like, i get it, vaccines aren't perfect and there are some valid concerns about safety and efficacy, but measles is just so easy to prevent with a simple shot. 2 million kids dying from measles every year is just heartbreaking.

i think the problem goes beyond just lack of awareness or education, though. it's also about trust in public health and the medical community. if people don't believe that vaccines are safe or effective, they're less likely to get vaccinated, which creates this snowball effect where more and more people end up getting sick.

it's like, we've been here before with things like smallpox and polio, but these were diseases that could actually kill you. measles is just so much easier to prevent than that. so yeah, i think the loss of the "measles-free" status in canada is a wake-up call for all of us.

๐Ÿค• Canada's "measles-free" status is at risk & it's super worrying! ๐Ÿšจ Measles is one of the most contagious diseases out there, but with 90% of kids vaccinated back in 2019, it should've been under control by now. ๐Ÿ˜ท Now, over 5k cases in Canada & thousands more in the US... what's going on?! ๐Ÿคฏ We need to step up vaccination efforts & trust in public health messaging ASAP! ๐Ÿ’Š It's not just about personal choice, but also about protecting vulnerable populations like young kids & people with weakened immune systems. ๐Ÿ™ The global situation is pretty bleak if we don't take action soon. ๐ŸŒŽ

man this is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ canada's been a model for vaccinations and now they're like totally falling apart... what happened? I know there are still some people out there who don't wanna get vaccinated but 5k cases of measles in one year is just wild ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ also, it's not just canada or the us its happening everywhere and it's making me super worried about my kid's health ๐ŸŒŸ we need to step up our vaccination game and figure out why people are losing trust in public health ๐Ÿ“Š

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’‰ oh man, canada's going down ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 90% vaccine rate in 2019 to like 82% now ๐Ÿคฏ thats a huge drop! and its not just canada, usa is getting hit hard too ๐ŸŒŽ measles is a total nightmare ๐ŸงŸโ€โ™€๏ธ nearly 2 million kids dying from it every year ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ˜ญ we gotta get our act together on vaccination rates ASAP ๐Ÿ’ช or else were gonna see more of these outbreaks ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿคฏ I mean, come on, Canada's "measles-free" status? What's the point of even having that title if it's just going to get revoked like this?! ๐Ÿ˜’ It's like they're giving up on public health altogether. And what's worse is that the US is in the same boat (no pun intended). I'm so tired of hearing about vaccine-preventable diseases making a comeback. ๐Ÿค• Where were all these people when their parents got vaccinated as kids?! ๐Ÿ™„ It's like they're all just now realizing that this stuff matters. Newsflash: it does matter! ๐Ÿ’‰ Get with the times, guys! 82% vaccination rate in 2022? That's like, what, a century ago in terms of progress?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ We need better than that. More public health education, more trust in the system... and a lot less apathy when it comes to getting vaccinated ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿค• honestly i'm not surprised about canada's situation... like how can we expect people to follow rules when we're always shaming or stigmatizing those who don't conform? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ it's all about setting a good example and creating a sense of community... if we want to promote vaccination rates, we need to make it more accessible and welcoming for everyone, not just the "cool kids" ๐ŸŽ‰

omg ๐Ÿคฏ canada's measles outbreak is so scary! i mean, 5k cases in 2025? that's insane ๐Ÿ˜ฑ how could vaccine rates drop from 90% to 82% in just 3 years? ๐Ÿค” was it a government thing or just people not wanting to get vaccinated? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ also, why is canada so bad at handling outbreaks if the us is also struggling with its own problems? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ i feel like we need better public health messaging and more education on vaccine safety... can't just rely on fear tactics alone ๐Ÿ˜…

Ugh, this is super worrying ๐Ÿค•... I mean, I get it that vaccination rates can fluctuate, but 82% in 2022? That's still pretty high, right? ๐Ÿ˜• And what's with the sharp drop to 90% in 2019? Wasn't there a big campaign or something back then? ๐Ÿค” Anyway, 5,000 cases in Canada now is just insane ๐Ÿคฏ... and it's not just Canada, I'm seeing reports of huge outbreaks in other places too. It's like, we know vaccines work, so what's going on here? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Is it really a lack of trust or something more complex at play? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค• I'm really concerned about what's happening with measles cases in Canada and the US... it's alarming to see how quickly vaccination rates have dropped ๐Ÿ“‰. I mean, we're talking about a highly contagious disease that can spread like wildfire through unvaccinated populations ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. It's frustrating because there's a safe and effective vaccine available ๐Ÿ’‰. I think this is a clear example of how declining trust in public health messaging can lead to decreased vaccination rates ๐Ÿ“บ. We need to get back on track with promoting the importance of vaccinations and building trust in community health measures ๐Ÿ’•.

Ugh, this is so worrying! ๐Ÿค• Measles outbreaks are like, super contagious, and it's heartbreaking that Canada is now at risk of losing its "measles-free" status after 20+ years ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, what happened to all those kids who got vaccinated back in the day? ๐Ÿ˜” Now we've got over 5k cases and it's a huge concern ๐Ÿ‘€.

It's not just Canada though - the US is also feeling the effects ๐Ÿค•. And honestly, I think this is a wake-up call for us as a society ๐Ÿ’ก. We need to prioritize our health and take care of each other ๐Ÿค. Vaccination rates are super important, and it's time for us to get on board with getting vaccinated ๐Ÿ’‰.

I mean, we know how safe and effective vaccines are - 2 million kids die from measles every year because they're not vaccinated ๐Ÿคฏ. It's just not worth it, you know? We need to build trust in public health messaging again and make vaccination a priority ๐ŸŒŸ.
