Brother of Chinese Immigrant Who Died at Pa. ICE Detention Center Sues US Government Over Cover-Up
The family of Chaofeng Ge, a 32-year-old Chinese immigrant who died under mysterious circumstances at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Pennsylvania, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security. The case centers around allegations that federal officials ignored Yangeng Ge's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for information about his brother's death.
According to the lawsuit, Chaofeng Ge was found dead in a shower stall on August 5 with a cloth wrapped around his neck and his legs and hands tied behind his back. The cause of death is still unclear. Yangeng Ge claims that federal officials unlawfully ignored his FOIA request seeking answers about his brother's death.
The ICE Detainee Death Report for Ge lists that he was brought to the facility on July 31 after being convicted of accessing an electronic device issued to another person who did not authorize its use. However, the family disputes this information, saying that their brother was held at the facility for several months and that the report is "highly suspect."
The lawsuit also alleges that Ge felt isolated in the facility because no one spoke Mandarin and the staff made no effort to communicate with him. The family has corroborated these allegations through interviews with people who left the facility and medical records.
Yangeng Ge filed a FOIA request on September 9 seeking information about his brother's detention, including details about the conditions of the facility, treatment by personnel, and the circumstances of his death. He claimed that ICE received the request but unlawfully ignored it because they were required to inform him within 20 days whether they would comply.
The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief and for the agencies to release all records pertaining to Ge's brother's detention and death. Yangeng Ge stated, "I am devastated by the loss of my brother and by the knowledge that he was suffering so greatly in that detention center... He did not deserve to be treated that way. I want justice for my brother, answers as to how this could have happened and accountability for those responsible for his death."
The case highlights concerns about transparency and accountability within ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. The lawsuit calls for much-needed clarity into how these agencies treat detainees and for them to release records related to Ge's brother's detention and death.
