PECO's Expanded Customer Relief Program Offers Up to $750 in Credits
Pennsylvania's leading energy provider, PECO, has expanded its Customer Relief Fund program to assist households struggling with overdue energy bills. The initiative aims to provide financial relief to customers who are facing rising energy costs.
Eligible households can receive grants ranging from $500 to $750, depending on their outstanding balance and income level. Those currently owing more than $2,500 can still apply for the program if they're able to reduce their debt to $2,500 or less. Households with an annual income between 151% and 300% of the federal poverty level are eligible.
The expanded program targets households that often fall through the cracks, including hardworking families who earn too much to qualify for assistance but struggle to make ends meet. The PECO Customer Relief Fund is funded by $10 million from PECO, Exelon, and the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.
Energy suppliers in Pennsylvania raised rates in June, with PECO increasing its rates by 12.6%, resulting in a $8 increase to the average customer's monthly bill. The growing demand on the electricity grid, particularly from data centers, is driving up energy costs.
The expanded program comes as Governor Josh Shapiro has threatened to remove Pennsylvania from PJM Interconnection if it doesn't address rising energy costs. Shapiro emphasized the need for change, stating that he won't stand for a status quo that perpetuates slowing down and increasing costs.
Households can apply for the program until December 31 or when funds are exhausted. Approved customers will receive $750 credits listed in their energy bills, providing some relief from the burden of rising energy expenses.
