At least 9 dead, 11 injured in UPS plane crash and explosion at Kentucky airport

Multiple fatalities reported following UPS cargo plane crash and explosion at Kentucky airport; death toll expected to rise.

A devastating air tragedy occurred at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, where a UPS cargo plane went up in flames while taking off for Honolulu on Tuesday evening. The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, had been carrying packages destined for the Hawaiian islands when disaster struck, leaving at least nine people dead and 11 injured.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as "apocalyptic," with massive balls of flames exploding into the sky and large billowing clouds of black smoke filling the air. The plane's left wing was engulfed in fire before it lifted off the ground and crashed back down, causing a huge explosion that ripped through the airport's perimeter.

"It just rocked the whole place," said Tom Brooks Jr., who runs a metal recycling business near the crash site. "This was massive. I mean, it literally looked like a war zone."

The aircraft itself is believed to have acted like a bomb due to the large amount of fuel on board, which ignited and caused the catastrophic chain reaction that led to the disaster.

"It really, really looks like the plane was struggling to gain altitude as a fire blazed on its left side around one of its engines," said aviation attorney Pablo Rojas. "Given the amount of fuel it was carrying, once the fire started in that area, it would've been only a matter of time before there was an explosion or the fire grew rapidly."

The crash has sent shockwaves through the community, with thousands of UPS employees and contractors affected by the disaster. The company has announced that it will halt package sorting operations at its Louisville facility until further notice.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said he expects the death toll to increase as rescue efforts continue, while police chief Paul Humphrey warned that the scene is still not safe for workers to return to. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash, which will involve 28 people.

For many in the community, the tragedy has left a personal impact, with friends and family members frantically searching for loved ones who may have been in the vicinity of the explosion.

OMG 🀯 just saw this 😱 on reddit... can't believe what happened at that airport 🚨. It's crazy to think about how fast things went from normal to catastrophic πŸŒͺ️. And the fact that there was so much fuel on board makes me shudder πŸ’₯. I'm glad everyone is safe, but the thought of those people trapped in the plane or injured by the blast is just devastating πŸ˜”. 9 lives lost already and it's gonna get worse, right? 🀞. Anyone have any info on the cause?

Ugh, this UPS cargo plane crash is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... I can imagine how terrifying it must've been for people watching from afar - massive fireballs exploding into the sky? It's like something out of a horror movie. The thought of all that fuel on board, just waiting to ignite and cause chaos... it's crazy. And now, all these people are affected by this tragedy 🀝. I feel so bad for UPS employees and contractors who have their packages and livelihoods disrupted. It's gotta be super hard for them right now πŸ˜”.

Man... this is just heartbreaking 😩. You can't even imagine how devastating it must be to witness something like that. I remember when air travel was still relatively safe back in the day πŸ™, and now we're seeing these crazy accidents happen all over the place.

I'm sure those 9 people who lost their lives will never get to see their loved ones again... 😒 it's just so sad. And the fact that there are more casualties expected? It's just too much to handle. The airport is still not safe for workers, can you believe it? 🀯

And what really gets me is the UPS employees and contractors who are affected by this disaster. They're the ones who will be struggling to make ends meet while their loved ones are still searching for them... πŸ™ it's just so unfair.

The NTSB better get to the bottom of this ASAP, because we need answers and justice for these families πŸ’”. This tragedy is going to have a lasting impact on our community, and I can only hope that it will lead to changes in safety protocols to prevent something like this from happening again πŸ™πŸ’«

Wow! 🚨😱 This is so not good! Like, what's going on at this airport?! First planes crashing then explosions? It's like something out of a movie or TV show. I'm sure it was really scary for all those people there. I feel bad for the UPS employees and contractors who were affected by this... they must be going through some tough times right now πŸ€•πŸ’”

😱 that's so devastating can't even imagine what those families going through right now, praying for everyone to be safe πŸ™ hope the investigation is thorough & gets to the bottom of what happened πŸ’‘ at least 9 lives lost already & it's expected to rise, hoping it doesn't get much worse πŸ’” need more info on how this could've happened hopefully some good comes out of this tragedy 😊

OMG 🀯 this is insane!!! I'm literally still shaking thinking about it... like what even happened?!? A cargo plane just explodes mid-air and then crashes back down? It's like something out of a movie, but sadly it's real life πŸ˜”. The fact that 9 people are already gone and 11 injured is just heartbreaking πŸ€•. I can only imagine the fear those on the ground must've felt when they heard the explosion 🚨. My heart goes out to all the UPS employees affected by this... I'm sure it's been a nightmare for them 😩. The investigation has started, but I hope they get to the bottom of this ASAP πŸ’‘. This is just too much to process right now 🀯😱

😱 This is just devastating... I mean, what can you even say? A UPS cargo plane just goes up in flames while taking off, leaving at least 9 people dead and 11 injured πŸ€•. It's like something out of a nightmare. I feel so bad for the families of those who were on board, or even near the airport... they're all probably freaking out right now 😩.

And can you believe how fast the fire spread? I mean, it sounds like the plane was basically carrying a bomb on board with that much fuel 🀯. It's just crazy to think about what could've been prevented if something had been done sooner. But at the same time, you gotta wonder what really went wrong... was it pilot error? Maintenance issue? Something else entirely?

I'm so worried about all those UPS employees and contractors who are affected by this... they're gonna be out of work for a while now πŸ€•. And the airport is still not safe, which is just... ugh. I hope the NTSB can get to the bottom of this soon and figure out what happened πŸ’₯.

😱 this is just horrific. i cant even imagine what those ppl were going thru on that plane. 9 people already dead & 11 injured? that's crazy. it makes me wanna stay safe no matter where im going. like, whats the point of flying if theres a chance ur gonna crash like dat 🀯. and it's not just the ppl who died but also the crew... they have families too πŸ˜”. how r u supposed to find out if ur loved one is okay after somethin like this happens? that must b super stressful for them 2. anywaiz, gotta hope the investigation goes well & ppl in charge take it seriously πŸš¨πŸ’Ό

😱 just can't believe what happened at that airport 🀯 this is like something out of a movie or a bad dream but it's real life sadly πŸ˜” anyone else keep thinking about those poor people on that plane who never made it to hawaii 🌴 i mean we hear about plane crashes all the time but this one takes the cake what if the fuel ignited first instead of the engine? would've been way more deadly πŸ’₯ anyway gotta be thinking about those innocent victims and their families πŸ‘ͺπŸ’•

πŸ€• seriously though, how did this even happen? I mean UPS is like super reliable and all, but I guess you can't be too careful when it comes to cargo planes 🚨. And 9 people are dead already, it's only gonna get worse 🀒. The fact that the plane was carrying so much fuel just makes me wanna cry 😭. I hope they figure out what went wrong and make some changes or whatever. But for now, can we please just take a deep breath and try to process this trauma? πŸ™

πŸ€• this is so crazy... i'm still trying to process what happened at that airport. first of all, 9 people are dead and 11 others injured? that's just devastating. and the fact that it was a UPS cargo plane carrying packages to hawaii makes it even more surreal. i mean, who expects something like this to happen on a Tuesday evening?

the description of the explosion is just... wow. "apocalyptic" doesn't even do it justice. massive flames, black smoke everywhere... it's crazy to think about how close people must have been to the plane when it crashed.

i'm really worried about the UPS employees and contractors who are affected by this. they're going to be feeling a lot of stress and anxiety in the coming days and weeks.

the fact that the governor is expecting the death toll to rise is just heartbreaking. and those investigators from the NTSB are going to have a tough job trying to figure out what went wrong.

my heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy πŸ™

just can't believe what's happening 😱... that UPS plane was like a fireball taking off πŸš€πŸ”₯ and it's crazy how it could've been so unpredictable - all that fuel just exploding everywhere... hopefully everyone gets to safety soon πŸ’ͺ and those 9 people who lost their lives, they're not forgotten πŸ™. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the NTSB can figure out what went wrong and make some changes so this never happens again πŸ’‘

😱 I just can't believe what happened at that airport yesterday... I've lived near Louisville my whole life and never seen anything like it. The fact that people were injured and there were fatalities is just heartbreaking πŸ˜”. I mean, you're just going about your day, minding your own business, when suddenly something like this happens out of nowhere.

As a package delivery guy myself (I work for Amazon), I know how serious cargo flights can be. But to see it happen like that... it's just devastating πŸ€•. I'm sure UPS will do everything they can to support their employees and contractors who were affected by the crash. The investigation is gonna take some time, but hopefully it'll get to the bottom of what happened.

I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for everyone involved in this tragedy πŸ’”. It's going to be a tough road ahead, but I hope we all stick together as a community to support each other through this πŸ€—.
