US Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Fires Back at Jake Paul Over 'Fake American Citizen' Comment
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) took aim at influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul over his criticism of Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, saying he had a personal stake in the issue and was simply trying to deflect attention from his own tax avoidance.
In a scathing response, AOC wrote that Paul's call for Bad Bunny to be labeled a "fake American citizen" was hypocritical, given the fact that Paul himself moved to Puerto Rico last year as part of a trend of wealthy foreigners taking advantage of the island's tax breaks and incentives.
By contrast, Bad Bunny has long been open about his support for low-income kids' access to arts and sports programs, funding initiatives in his home country through the Benito Bowl charity, which he founded.
Furthermore, Paul had previously called out Bad Bunny for his criticism of the tax exemptions in a 2022 interview. In the same interview, Logan Paul - Jake's brother - defended their cousin, saying that Puerto Ricans are Americans and they should be given more opportunities to showcase their talent.
After AOC took issue with Jake Paul's original comment, he tried to backtrack by changing his X bio to "Benito #1 fan" and claiming that his "fake citizen" remark was not about the citizenship status of Puerto Ricans, but rather people who use their First Amendment rights to criticize America.
