Africa Cup of Nations: tie-by-tie analysis of the last-16 matches | Osasu Obayiuwana

Senegal's 2022 Afcon triumph has given them a significant edge over their Sudanese opponents, but Sudan have shown remarkable resilience in the face of their country's ongoing war. The Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has instilled discipline into his team, with players who are willing to take risks and play for each other. For Sudan, a win would be an incredible fairy tale, one that could inspire a generation of footballers.

Meanwhile, Mali look set to cause some problems for Tunisia in their encounter at the weekend. The Malian side boast a talented squad, featuring Tottenham's Yves Bissouma and Auxerre striker Lassine Sinayoko, who have been impressive throughout the tournament. Mali are known for their free-flowing football, which is always an attractive spectacle to watch.

Morocco will be looking to put their nerves behind them as they host Tanzania in a game that should be straightforward. The Atlas Lions have shown incredible firepower, with players like Brahim Diaz and Achraf Hakimi on the ball. Ayoub El Kaabi's spectacular goal against Zambia has been widely praised, and it is hard to see how the Tanzanians can contain this talented Moroccan side.

Hugo Broos' South African team will be aware of the threat posed by Cameroon, who were coached by Broos himself before being replaced earlier in the tournament. The South Africans have improved significantly under Broos, but they may struggle against a Cameroon side that has shown some impressive form.

Egypt are heavy favourites to beat Benin, despite the manager Gernot Rohr's assertion that this will be "a big game" for his team. Egypt boast an impressive squad, featuring players like Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah, who should prove too much for the Beninese side.

Nigeria, meanwhile, look set to make short work of Mozambique. With a potent strike force including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze, Nigeria have already shown they are capable of dominating matches in this tournament.

In the Algerian versus Congolese match, both coaches - Vladimir Petkovic and Sébastien Desabre - will be looking to exploit any weaknesses in their opponents' defences. Both teams possess talented players like Riyad Mahrez and Fiston Mayele, who have consistently shown they can produce quality performances.

Côte d'Ivoire are the defending champions, but a 7pm match against Burkina Faso could go either way. The Ivorians have been criticized for their decision-making since winning the tournament last year, with manager Emerse Faé struggling to instill confidence in his team. Despite this, they still possess an impressive squad and should be able to outlast Burkina Faso.

The final question is whether Algeria or Democratic Republic of Congo can secure a result in their match at 4pm. Both teams boast talented players like Riyad Mahrez and Edmund Tapsoba, who will be eager to prove themselves against each other's teams. This is likely to be a game that sees both coaches employing various tactics in an attempt to outmanoeuvre each other.

In the Côte d'Ivoire versus Burkina Faso match on Tuesday at 7pm, it is difficult to predict which team will come out on top. The Ivorians are looking to prove they can succeed without the complacency that followed their victory last year, while Burkina Faso have shown impressive form and should be a force to be reckoned with in this tournament.

However, it would seem that Côte d'Ivoire are the slight favourites going into this match.

im kinda hyped for the matches this wknd esp the malian vs tunisia one 🤩 think Mali's free-flowing style could give Tunisia some trouble but at the same time, Tunisia have been solid so far 🙏 also can't wait to see how morocco takes on tanzania, atlas lions are always a force to be reckoned with 💥

I'm getting so excited for these Afcon matches 🤩! I think Ghana's Kwesi Appiah is doing an amazing job as a coach - his team seems so cohesive and disciplined on the pitch. I hope Sudan can pull off that fairy tale win against Senegal, it would be incredible for their country 💪. And wow, Mali's free-flowing style of play sounds so much fun to watch 🌟. Morocco's firepower is going to be tough for Tanzania to handle 😅. Cameroon's team looks solid under Broos, but I think South Africa will struggle against them 🤔.

And Egypt and Nigeria are just going to annihilate their opponents - those strike forces are unbeatable 💥! Algeria and Democratic Republic of Congo's match at 4pm is shaping up to be a real nail-biter, though - both teams have talented players who will give it their all 😲. I'm also keeping an eye on Côte d'Ivoire vs Burkina Faso - the Ivorians are going to need to show some serious improvement if they want to win that match 🔥

i think both Algeria and Congo could pull off an upset 🤔. its not often you see teams that have nothing to lose go out there and give it their all. for me, i think what makes Congos game against Algeria more interesting is that they've got a history with them and it's clear that the players hate playing each other 😒. if Congo can keep their cool and stick to their strategy, i reckon they might just have a chance to sneak one past Algeria

the african cup of nations is always so unpredictable 🤯 i mean, senegal beating sudan will be like an incredible fairy tale but for sudan to pull off a win would be like a miracle 😱 and what's with mali's squad featuring players from top european clubs? 🤔 it just goes to show how talent can spread across borders.

I'm loving how all these African teams are giving it their all in the Afcon! 🇸🇳 It's so inspiring to see Sudan showing resilience despite everything they're going through, and I think it would be amazing if Yves Bissouma from Tottenham can lead them to a win 😊. Mali looks like a dark horse for me, their free-flowing style is infectious & makes you want to watch more of their games 📺! Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria... they all seem so confident with their firepower, but I still think it's anyone's game at this point 🤔💥

I'm thinkin' the most underdog story of all is Sudan 🤩, ya know? They're playin' with so much heart and passion, and they just wanna believe in themselves. It's like, we've seen it happen before where an underdog team comes from nowhere to win a big game or tournament 🏆. And I think that's exactly what could happen for Sudan if they can get past Senegal. But at the same time, Senegal is lookin' super strong right now, so it's gonna be a tough one to call 👀. Still, you gotta love the spirit of Sudan and the fact that they're makin' a stand in the face of all this adversity 💪.

I think Egypt's chances of beating Benin look pretty solid 🤩. With Mohamed Salah on their squad, they've got some serious firepower 💪. The fact that Gernot Rohr is being cautious about it being a "big game" just tells me he knows how good his team is 😏. On the other hand, Nigeria's attack looks almost unbeatable with Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze up front 🔥. I'm not sure Mozambique can handle that kind of pressure ⚔️.

As for Mali vs Tunisia, I think it could be a close game 🤔. Both teams have talented players and unpredictable styles. Mali's free-flowing football might just catch the Tunisians off guard 😮. But at the end of the day, I still think Mali has the edge 💥. And on Saturday, I expect Morocco to put their nerves behind them and dominate Tanzania ⚽️. The Atlas Lions are way too good for that team 🙄.

Oh, and I'm loving the contrast between South Africa and Cameroon 🤝. Both teams have made huge progress under Hugo Broos, but when it comes down to it, I think Cameroon might just come out on top 😎. Their free-flowing style is so hard to stop ⚽️!

I'm so stoked for Senegal's chances against Sudan 🤩! The way Appiah's got his team clicking is straight fire 🔥. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a well-oiled machine take on an opponent with a war-torn country behind them? 🌍️ But seriously, the talent and discipline in Ghana's squad is undeniable.

As for Mali vs Tunisia, this one's gonna be a real barnburner 🎢! The Malian side has some serious firepower, and I'm loving their free-flowing style of play. Yves Bissouma and Lassine Sinayoko are absolute talents 🔥!

Morocco's got my back for this one too 👊. They've been looking fierce all tournament, and that Brahim Diaz goal against Zambia was pure magic ⚽️! Tanzania don't stand a chance 🙅‍♂️.

Egypt vs Benin is like the ultimate showdown 💪! Egypt's squad is stacked with talent, and I'm not surprised they're heavy favourites. Gernot Rohr might be hyping it up, but I believe he knows what he's talking about 😏.

And Nigeria? Forgive me, but they're looking almost unbeatable 🤯! That strike force of Osimhen, Lookman, and Chukwueze is a nightmare to defend against 🔪.

I'm so down for the Algerian vs Congolese match 🎲 too! Both teams have those super talented players, Riyad Mahrez and Fiston Mayele. This one's gonna be a real tactical battle 💡!

Lastly, Côte d'Ivoire vs Burkina Faso is like the ultimate David vs Goliath story 🤣! The Ivorians are still reeling from last year's win, but they've got that amazing squad and should come out on top. Still gonna be a close match tho 😬.

I'm thinking about how Egypt's squad is looking so strong 🤔. They've got all these top players like Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah, and I'm wondering if Nigeria can even give them a run for their money? 🏆 I mean, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are definitely talented players, but I think Egypt's depth is going to be too much for Nigeria to handle 😬. And what about the Cameroon game? I know South Africa has improved under Broos, but Cameroon looks like they're on a whole different level right now ⚽️.

I don't think any of these teams stand a chance. Sudan's war-torn country is probably just making a token effort for their players' sake, and Ghana's coach might not have actually implemented all those discipline changes I've been reading about... Meanwhile, Mali might be able to pull off an upset against Tunisia if they can keep their cool under pressure – but that's a big ask. And let's be real, Morocco is basically just going to steamroll Tanzania like the Atlas Lions do in every other game 🤦‍♂️

I think Senegal's confidence from winning Afcon 2022 is giving them an unfair advantage 🤔. It's like they're being overhyped and expecting to win every game against weaker teams. Their Sudanese opponents might be in a tough spot, but I think the underdog spirit could actually work in their favour 🌟.

On another note, have you seen Mali's squad? Those guys are talented 😍! If they can keep up their form, they've got a real shot at causing some problems for Tunisia and maybe even making it to the finals 🏆.

I'm so hyped for the matches coming up 🤩 especially the Algeria vs DRC one, I've got a feeling Riyad Mahrez is gonna bring the heat 🔥 and give his team the win. Sudan's chances might be slim but their resilience is super admirable 💪 they've got heart! 😊

I'm thinking about how some of these teams are using football as an escape from their real-life struggles 🤔. Like, Egypt's team is basically a super-rich squad with famous players on board, but they're still playing for their country and trying to bring pride home. And it's the same with Mali, who despite having talented young players like Yves Bissouma, are fighting against war and instability in their own country 🌎💪.

But at the same time, I love how these underdog teams are giving it their all, even when they're facing huge odds. It's inspiring to see Nigeria and Sudan playing with such heart and determination - like, who knows, maybe one of them will pull off an upset? 😮 And for those fans watching back home, it must be amazing to see your team on the big stage, fighting for pride and glory 🏆.

I'm low-key surprised by how good Sudan is looking considering all they've been through 🤯. Their resilience is actually really admirable, and I hope they can pull off a major upset against Senegal... but it's hard to see them keeping that up for 90 minutes 😅. On the other hand, Mali are a whole different story - their free-flowing style of play could be a real problem for Tunisia 🔄. And Morocco just looks too strong, I don't think Tanzania can compete with those guys 🔥. Nigeria is definitely my pick to win, though... Victor Osimhen is an absolute beast 🤯!

🤔 This tournament is getting more intense by the minute! I think Mali has the potential to cause some major upsets, especially if they can get their free-flowing game going against Tunisia 🌟. And Morocco's firepower is definitely not something to be underestimated - Brahim Diaz and Achraf Hakimi are a deadly duo 💥.

I'm also loving Nigeria's attack, with Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze leading the charge 🔥. But what's really interesting is how Algeria vs DRC Congo will play out - both teams have talented players and coaches who will stop at nothing to win 🤝.

On a slightly more serious note, I think it's great that Sudan has shown so much resilience in the face of their country's ongoing war 🙏. It's not going to be easy for them to get motivated, but if they can pull off an upset against Senegal, it would be a real fairy tale moment ✨.

I'm telling you, the way Nigeria is playing right now is crazy 🔥👀! They've got an amazing squad and Victor Osimhen is on fire ⚽️! I think they're gonna run over Mozambique like they did with Benin 🤯. And can we talk about Cameroon for a sec? 😍 Hugo Broos knows his stuff, but I'm not sure if he's prepared to take down the Cameroonian giants 💪.

Anyway, back to Nigeria - I'm hyped to see them crush Mozambique and make it to the next round 🎉. And I think Egypt is gonna steamroll Benin too 😴. But it's all about how these teams react under pressure now 🔥. Will they stay focused or get distracted? Time will tell! ⏰

omg Sudan is really stepping up their game 🤩, can't wait to see what happens next! 🤞 Mali and Morocco look super strong too 💪, gonna be tough for anyone to beat them 💥. And omg Egypt's squad is just crazy talented 🤯! But I'm rooting for South Africa under Broos 👏, they've come so far in this tournament 😊. Nigeria looks like a dominant force too 🔥, can't wait to see Victor Osimhen score again 🎉. Algeria and Congo are gonna be a close one ⚔️, Riyad Mahrez is just on fire 🔥! And Côte d'Ivoire needs to get it together after last year's struggles 😅... but I think they'll bounce back 💪
