ABC's Juju Chang uncovers exclusive new details about California woman's murder

"Two Decades Later, Justice Served for Fresno Woman's Heinous Murder"

Twenty years after a young woman's life was brutally cut short, investigators have finally brought closure to the family of Debbie Dorian, a 22-year-old recent Fresno State graduate found dead in her apartment in 1996. The breakthrough came thanks to the tireless efforts of former Fresno law enforcement officer Vince Zavala, who never gave up on solving the case despite being asked to retire.

Newly unearthed evidence has led to the arrest and conviction of Nickey Stane, a man who terrorized several others in Visalia after Debbie's death. In an exclusive 20/20 episode, Juju Chang will reveal the shocking details behind the investigation, including Stane's attempts to evade justice.

Chang, who sat down with Action News ahead of the episode, described the cat-and-mouse game between investigators and Stane as "fascinating." She also spoke about a survivor, Jane Doe #1, who was sexually assaulted by Stane years after Debbie's death. Despite initially remaining anonymous, the survivor has now come forward to share her story.

The 20/20 episode will provide a long-awaited closure for Debbie Dorian's family and those affected by Stane's crimes. Chang praised the storytelling that went into the episode, saying it was a tribute to all the work done at 20/20. However, Nickey Stane declined to comment on the matter.

Stane is now serving his life sentence at California Medical Facility in northern California due to his age. The case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of heinous crimes and the importance of never giving up in pursuit of justice.

ugh, can't believe it's taken 20 yrs for someone like stane to get brought down 🀯 finally some closure for debbie's family tho... i mean, what kind of life sentence is a lifers just gonna rot away without ever having to face the ppl they hurt in person? sounds like stane dodged that bullet. and poor jan doe #1, 6 yrs after debbies death she gets attacked again by stane... this case just shows how messed up our system can be 😩

I just saw that after 20 years, the person who did this awful thing to Debbie Dorian has finally been caught 🀯πŸ’₯. I'm glad that her family is finally getting some closure πŸ™. It's crazy how one person can hurt so many people and it takes a long time for justice to be served ⏰. The fact that the investigators didn't give up even when they were asked to retire is really inspiring πŸ’ͺ. It just goes to show that if we keep pushing forward, even in the face of obstacles, we can make a difference 🌟. I'm looking forward to watching that 20/20 episode, it sounds like it's going to be really good πŸ“Ί!

I'm so tired of all these sensationalized news stories flooding my feed 🀯... Two decades is way too long to be stuck in limbo, waiting for some closure 😩. And don't even get me started on the investigative process - it's like they're making a whole TV episode out of it πŸ“Ί... I mean, I guess it's good that Vince Zavala and Juju Chang are finally getting credit for their hard work πŸ’Ό, but can't we just have some updates in between these epic 'breakthroughs'? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ The fact that Nickey Stane is still alive and serving life in prison might be a silver lining, I guess... still, 20/20 episodes are kinda like the ultimate attention-grabber 😬. Next thing you know, they'll be making a whole documentary series out of this... πŸ™„

Man, finally some closure for Debbie's family! 20 years is way too long to be stuck with this kind of trauma 😩. Kudos to Vince Zavala for not giving up on the case - you go, old dude! πŸ’ͺ I'm glad Jane Doe #1 came forward too, sharing her story and helping bring justice to those affected πŸ™. Nickey Stane's trying to avoid commenting but let's be real, he had a sick 20-year run of terrorizing people in Visalia...that's some crazy stuff 😲. Can't say I'm surprised he's serving life tho, dude got caught eventually ⚠️. The 20/20 episode sounds pretty fascinating, can't wait to see it! πŸ“Ί

idk why im so happy for Debbie's family gettin closure but also kinda sad that it took 20 yrs... its like, justice is served but at what cost? πŸ˜” Vince Zavala's dedication to solving the case is super admirable but Nickey Stane's age is just crazy 🀯 who gets sentenced to life in prison at 60 tho? πŸ€‘ and Juju Chang's storytelling skills are on point but what about Jane Doe #1's experience... does she get the support she needs after all these yrs? πŸ€•

man this whole story its like, so bittersweet you know? two decades of not knowing what happened to debbie, and now that justice is finally served but at what cost? the family gets closure but the scars will always remain. and stane, he's like this monster who thought he could just keep on hurting people, terrorizing others... its like, how can someone be so cruel?

and i cant help but think about how many other debbies are out there, still waiting for justice to be served. it feels like we're just scratching the surface of these problems, you know? and then cases like this one come up and you're like, wait a minute... we're not getting better, we're just learning from our mistakes.

anyway, i guess its good that stane is behind bars now, but at what age does society start to let people rot in prison for life? like, 70-something years old is still pretty young to be locked up for good.

20 years later, finally some closure for Debbie's family πŸ’”πŸ•ŠοΈ. I mean, it's wild that Nickey Stane was able to evade justice for so long, like what was he even doing while they were looking for him? πŸ˜β€β™‚οΈ and the fact that Jane Doe #1 came forward is super brave of her πŸ™Œ. But 20/20 can't be trusted, right? I mean, they're just trying to get clicks with a good story, not necessarily telling it all πŸ€”. Still, it's nice that justice was served, and now Nickey Stane gets to enjoy the rest of his life behind bars 🚫.

Just read about the arrest of Nickey Stane 20 yrs after Debbie Dorian's murder 🀯😱 This is such a relief for her family & friends who've been waiting so long for closure! The detective, Vince Zavala, is a true hero πŸ™ His dedication to solving this case was unwavering even when others were telling him to retire. I hope the 20/20 episode helps bring some peace of mind to those affected... it's crazy to think Jane Doe #1 finally felt brave enough to come forward about her own trauma πŸ˜”

omg I'm literally so happy for Debbie's family!! 20 yrs is just too long to wait for answers πŸ˜πŸ’” it's crazy how one person's death can affect so many lives, but at least now justice has been served πŸ’― I've got to give a huge shoutout to Vince Zavala though, he never gave up on solving the case and that's what makes him a total hero πŸ™Œ his dedication is truly inspiring! 🀩
