ABC13's Share Your Holidays: How to help Houston Food Bank with rise in need and high call volumes

Houston Food Bank Sees Surge in Demand Amid Government Shutdown; ABC13 Launches Early Share Your Holidays Drive

The Houston Food Bank has seen a significant surge in demand for its services during the recent government shutdown, with some food banks reporting an 1,800% increase in demand since Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were halted. While these benefits are expected to be restored, the Houston Food Bank is already seeing the need continue and has launched its Share Your Holidays drive earlier than usual.

The food bank serves over one million people in southeast Texas, with many struggling to access nutritious food due to financial constraints or other barriers. According to a report by the Kinder Institute for Urban Research's Center for Community and Public Health, 39% of households in Houston and Harris County are food insecure, exceeding the national average of 14%.

The share your holidays drive offers an opportunity for individuals to make a difference in their community. The drive is expected to raise funds to support the food bank's services, which include providing meals for people in need.

Donations can be made through text message by sending "SYH2025" to 71777, scanning the QR code seen on-air during Share Your Holidays stories, or visiting the 2025 SYH fundraising page online. There are also eight drop-off locations throughout the Houston area where donations can be dropped off.

Some of the most-needed items include shelf-stable snacks such as granola bars, crackers, trail mix, nuts, and dried fruits; canned goods like meats, fruits, vegetables, pastas, beans, and soups; and drinks like water, sports drinks, and shelf-stable milk and juice.

The situation is not unique to Houston. According to Feeding Texas, a statewide network of food banks, 5.3 million Texans face food insecurity, with the highest rates found among seniors and children.

The need for food assistance continues to grow, and ABC13 hopes to exceed its record of 1,627,115 meals collected through Share Your Holidays. Donations will be accepted until New Year's Eve.

By supporting the Houston Food Bank through the Share Your Holidays drive, individuals can make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling with food insecurity.

😊 just saw that the Houston Food Bank is getting slammed due to the government shutdown 🀯 but instead of being bummed, I think it's awesome that they're launching their Share Your Holidays drive earlier than usual πŸŽ‰! it's a great opportunity for us to step up and make a difference in our community πŸ‘ i mean, 1,800% increase in demand is crazy, but that just means more people need help, right? 🀝 let's use this as a chance to spread some love and kindness ❀️ we can all make a difference with a simple donation or by sharing the word πŸ“’

I think its crazy that people are still talking about launching an "early" share your holidays drive, like it's even possible to do anything before Christmas 🀣. I mean, what's next? Early Easter egg hunts? Its like everyone is just trying to rush the holiday season so they can get over with it already. And honestly, who thought 1,800% increase in demand was a good thing? Sounds like chaos to me!

I'm surprised they're already seeing a surge in demand for their services during the shutdown, but I guess it makes sense considering how long these benefits were suspended πŸ€”. Anyway, I think it's great that ABC13 is launching Early Share Your Holidays Drive to raise funds and collect more donations - every little bit counts! They should really consider adding some online shopping options too, like a wishlist for people who can't make it to the drop-off locations. And honestly, 1,800% increase in demand since SNAP benefits were halted? That's crazy πŸ€‘. The fact that 39% of households in Houston are food insecure is just sad... we need to do better as a community!

I'm so worried about all these people struggling to get food πŸ€• I mean, I know we got this amazing food bank in Houston but it's crazy how much more they're getting asked for now 😳. I think it's awesome that ABC13 is doing their thing with the Share Your Holidays drive though - it's like, we can all make a difference, right? 🀝 We should totally donate some of those granola bars or canned goods, you know? 🍿πŸ₯€ My fam and I are already trying to help out as much as we can. But I guess this is also making me think about all the people in Texas who don't have access to food like that... it's just not right, you feel? 🀯

🀝 people r gonna need help with food n stuff cuz of dat government shutdown 1st off. its crazy to think 39% of households r struggling to get food lol that's like half the city 🀯. the houston food bank is doin their part by launchin early Share Your Holidays drive but we still gotta step up n help out our neighbors in need 🀝. lets support the cause n make a difference in this community πŸ’–

I'm still remembering when I was a kid and my parents would donate canned goods during the holidays... it was always such a big deal back then πŸ“¦. I don't know how things have changed but it's crazy to hear that food banks in Houston are seeing an 1800% increase in demand since the government shutdown. It just goes to show that even with all our progress, there's still so many people struggling to get by. And now they're launching this Share Your Holidays drive earlier than usual... I wish we could go back to a time when it was that easy to just donate some extra cash or canned goods to help out those in need πŸ€—. Anyway, ABC13 is doing their part as always, and I'm sure people will come together to make a difference... fingers crossed!

Man... 🀯 I'm not surprised to hear that the Houston Food Bank is seeing a huge surge in demand during this government shutdown thingy! 🚨 It's like, people need food more than ever when they're stressed about their benefits being cut off, you feel? πŸ˜• And yeah, 1,800% increase in demand is wild... like, what even is that?! 🀯 Anyways, I'm low-key impressed that ABC13 is launching Share Your Holidays drive earlier than usual to help out. It's actually kinda cool to see people coming together to make a difference! πŸ’– So, if you're able to donate some non-perishable snacks or canned goods, go for it, fam! 🎁 Every little bit helps, right? 😊

I'm seeing this news about the surge in demand for food banks during the government shutdown and it's heartbreaking πŸ€•. The fact that 39% of households in Houston are food insecure is just crazy 😱. It makes you wonder how people can be struggling so much, despite being in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

But what I love about this story is the community coming together to make a difference πŸ’–. The Share Your Holidays drive is a great initiative and it's amazing that ABC13 is launching it earlier than usual πŸŽ‰. It just goes to show that even small actions can add up to make a big impact.

I think we need more of these kinds of initiatives, where people can come together and support those in need 🀝. It's not about the government or policies, it's about human kindness and compassion ❀️. So let's all do our part and donate what we can, whether it's food, money, or just some time to volunteer 🎊. We can make a difference, one person at a time πŸ’ͺ.

🀝 just saw that the Houston Food Bank is seeing a huge surge in demand and I'm like totally blown away 🀯... 1800% increase in demand since government shutdown and some people are really struggling to get access to nutritious food 🍴πŸ‘₯... we gotta support them, you know? πŸ’• donating to the Share Your Holidays drive would be amazing 🎁... they're already seeing a lot of need even after benefits got restored πŸ€”... 39% of households in Houston are food insecure πŸ“Š... let's all chip in and make a difference ❀️

man i'm so down to see ppl comin together like this 🀝! 1800% increase in demand is crazy talk, but at least we're talkin about it and doin somethin about it πŸ™. i mean, 39% of households in houston are food insecure? that's just wrong πŸ’”. but like, what can you do right? donate some snacks or canned goods or whatever πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. let's make a difference, one granola bar at a time 🍞️! i'm actually kinda stoked we're launchin this early, it's like the community is already showin they care ❀️. and can u even believe 5.3 million texans are strugglin with food insecurity? that's wild 🀯. but again, let's just focus on helpin each other out, okay?

Umm okay so like I just saw this news about the Houston Food Bank and it's crazy how much demand they're getting right now 🀯 1800% increase in demand since the government shutdown is wild. Like, what's going on? Can we get some actual info on why people are struggling so bad that it's affecting their access to food? I need sources or something πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

And also, like I'm all for helping out, but 39% of households in Houston being food insecure is just too much πŸ€•. We gotta do better than this. Can we talk about how systemic issues are contributing to this problem? Or is it just a case of people struggling and needing a hand up?

And oh yeah, the share your holidays drive sounds cool and all, but can we get some more details on how the funds will be used? Like, will they be going directly to the people in need or will it be going to administrative costs? Just wanna make sure my money is being spent wisely πŸ’Έ
