Houstonians, grab your umbrellas - it's going to be a wild ride! An ABC13 Weather Watch has been issued due to strong to severe thunderstorms potentially hitting our area this evening.
A cold front is expected to move in tonight, bringing rain chances for the city up to 70% by evening. However, it's not just your average rain showers - isolated severe storms are possible ahead of and along the front, especially north of I-10. Damaging winds, large hail, and even a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
The storm prediction model is giving southeast Texas only a 5-15% chance of being near a severe thunderstorm today and tonight, with a slight possibility of tornadoes in Louisiana if the storms do turn severe. Heavy rain totals are also expected in some areas, potentially causing temporary flooding on streets.
But before you worry too much, marathon weekend isn't looking as chilly as it could have - at least not yet. Friday's front will bring back more typical winter weather by Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the upper 50s on both days. Temperatures during the marathon on Sunday are expected to be in the low-to-mid 40s.
Now, about those other freezes... There aren't any forecasted for the next 10 days, but as we head into February, signs suggest a colder pattern will develop across Canada and the US. So, while it's not imminent, winter is still on its way.
Stay ahead of the storm with our 13 Alert Radar Maps, which show areas most at risk of severe weather. And if you have any photos or videos to share, send them our way!
