'A modern masterpiece': writer Jack Thorne's best TV shows – from This Is England to Adolescence

Jack Thorne's most notable works for television include 'This Is England' (86-88-90), a gritty and poignant portrayal of working-class life in Thatcher's Britain. The show follows a group of young people as they navigate love, friendship, and violence against the backdrop of rising tensions in 1980s England.

Thorne has also been praised for his work on 'The Eddy', a Channel 4 series that explores the dark side of the club scene in Berlin. This moody drama about a bereaved jazz pianist running a struggling Paris nightclub was met with mixed reviews, with some critics finding the complex multiple dialogue confusing and others admiring its ambition.

Another notable work is 'Kiri', which tells the true story of the abduction of a nine-year-old Black girl from her foster family. The show stars Sarah Lancashire as a social worker who becomes embroiled in the case, along with Paapa Essiedu and Wunmi Mosaku.

Thorne has also tackled difficult topics such as the News International phone hacking scandal in 'The Hack', which starred David Tennant and Robert Carlyle. This drama was praised for its wit and satire but may have jarred some viewers with its tone.

'Toxic Town' is a powerful drama that explores the story of a young couple fighting for custody of their newborn daughter after she requires life-saving treatment. The show stars Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham, who also co-created it.

Thorne's collaborations with writer-director Shane Meadows have been highly praised, particularly in 'The Virtues', which explored themes of childhood trauma and abuse. The series was praised for its unflinching portrayal of difficult subjects.

One of his most recent works is 'Adolescence', a Netflix drama that explores the deadly consequences of online life leaking into the real world. The show stars Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty, and follows a 13-year-old boy's arrest for the murder of a female classmate.

Overall, Jack Thorne has made a significant impact on British television with his thought-provoking and often uncomfortable dramas.

I think what really sets Jack Thorne apart is how he tackles these really tough topics in a way that's not preachy or heavy-handed, you feel? Like 'Toxic Town' could've gone down the 'sad victim' route but it didn't - it was all about this couple fighting for their kid's future. And I loved how 'Adolescence' tackled online culture and its consequences...it's like, we're living in a world where that's our reality now 🤯. His collaborations with Shane Meadows are also really impressive, he's got this knack for getting the best out of his actors and making complex stories feel real. I'm curious to see what he does next! 💡

I'm not sure why people are still talking about this old-school drama style 🤔. I mean, don't get me wrong, shows like 'This Is England' were super important back in the day and tackled some really tough issues... but now it feels kinda dated ⏰. I think the problem is that we're moving so fast, tech-wise and socially... it's hard for any show to keep up 📱.

Thorne's got a solid track record of exploring heavy themes like phone hacking and toxic relationships 📰💔, but sometimes I feel like his dramas are just hitting you with too much info at once 🤯. And don't even get me started on the dialogue in 'The Eddy' - it was like watching a bunch of try-hard grad students arguing at a party 🎓.

Still, when he does manage to break through the noise... man, his stuff is top-notch 💥. 'Kiri', for example, was an incredible show that really made you feel something 😭. And I love how Thorne's always pushing boundaries with his collaborations with Shane Meadows - they're like two peas in a pod when it comes to tackling dark subjects 🤝.

I'm just saying... we need more shows like 'Adolescence' right now, because let's face it, online drama is real life for most of us 📊. Can't wait to see what Thorne does next 💥

I'm loving the gritty realism in Jack Thorne's work 💥. Shows like 'This Is England' are so raw and unflinching, it's like they're speaking straight to your soul 🤯. But, I do think some of his shows can be a bit overwhelming - like that multiple dialogue thing in 'The Eddy', I get what he's trying to do but sometimes it just gets too much 😩.

I'm also super impressed by how he tackles tough topics like the News International phone hacking scandal and childhood trauma 🤝. His collaborations with Shane Meadows are always on point, especially in 'The Virtues' - that show was so powerful and unapologetic 💪. But, I do think some of his shows can be a bit heavy-handed at times... still, overall, he's a genius when it comes to crafting dramas that make you feel all the feels 😭.

He's got a knack for tackling heavy topics without shying away from the tough stuff 🤔. I mean, 'This Is England' is a classic example of how TV can be both entertaining and emotionally resonant at the same time. And I love how he explores themes that are still relevant today, like the consequences of online actions in 'Adolescence'. It's like he's trying to make us think about our own behavior and how it might impact others 🤷‍♂️. On the other hand, some people might say his writing style can be a bit dense, but I think that's part of what makes his work so impactful – he's not afraid to push boundaries and challenge our perspectives 💡.

I think he got a bad rep for 'The Eddy', fam... people just didn't get it lol 😂. It's like they were expecting some cheesy club drama but instead they got a deep, moody show that explored the darker side of Berlin's nightlife 🌃. And yeah, multiple dialogue can be confusing, but that's part of its charm, right? 🤔

omg i just watched 'Toxic Town' 🤯 and it was literally so emotional 😭, I feel like jodie comer just gave me all her emotions through that show 💖, anyway, what's everyone thinking about jack thorne's latest drama on netflix? 📺 has anyone else seen 'adolescence'? 🤔

omg I just watched 'Adolescence' and it was SOOOO hard to watch 🤯💔 like I've seen some dark stuff in my life but this show took it to a whole new level 💀. the way they portrayed the online world as this toxic monster that consumes our lives is just so true rn 😩 I mean I'm guilty of scrolling through Twitter for hours on end and now I feel like I need to take a break from social media 📵💻. anyway, kudos to Jack Thorne for tackling such heavy topics with sensitivity and honesty 💯

I'm not sure if I love or hate the fact that Jack Thorne's latest show "Adolescence" is tackling this super sensitive topic of online harassment gone wrong... I mean, it's like we're already watching our kids getting bullied on socials, so to see a drama about it can be pretty heavy. But at the same time, I think he needs to keep pushing boundaries and having these hard conversations - we need more shows like this to help us understand what's really going on. I just wish they could've handled some of the online reactions better... all these strong opinions are making me wanna delete my socials altogether 🤯

🙌 can't believe how much talent there is in britain right now!!! jack thorne is literally killing it with all these amazing shows he's worked on 🤯 'toxic town' gave me chills, i loved how raw and emotional it was 😭 'adolescence' is so thought-provoking, it's like he's really making us think about the consequences of our online actions 💻👀 i'm also loving the collaborations with shane meadows, their dramas are always so honest and unflinching ❤️ what's your favorite jack thorne show? 🤔

Omg y'all I'm so glad to see that Jack Thorne is still killing it in the drama department 🤯💥 He's been tackling some super tough topics over the years, like phone hacking scandals and childhood trauma, but he always manages to do it with such nuance and sensitivity. His shows are never easy viewing, but they're so important for sparking conversations about the issues that matter. I'm loving his latest work on Adolescence - the way it explores the consequences of online life leaking into real life is just so thought-provoking 🤔

think about how jack thorne tackles tough topics in his shows... like toxicity in toxic town or online life in adolescence... it's crazy to me that our screens can be both a blessing & curse 🤯... he helps us see the world through different eyes, but sometimes that means we gotta face some uncomfortable truths ourselves 💔... maybe we should all take a step back & think about how we present ourselves online – do we wanna be heroes or villains? 🤝
